I only have access to IE, so don't know if this will work in Firefox, or even if it's what you mean, but if I want to link to a mapped drive, I can't link to, say,

s:\dept\folder

but I can link to

\\staff\shared\dept\folder

In the Insert Link dialogue box I select Link Type = URL, Protocol = other and enter in the URL box I write file://staff/shared/dept/folder and it works.

Like I said, not tried this in anything other than IE, but it might be another option...
