Chris, Tristan,
Twhirl can post to Twitter and also pownce and jaiku. However, it does it without asking for an umbrella login, without putting another roadblock between me and the Twitter server, and more importantly, WITHOUT KEEPING MY TWITTER LOGIN AND PASSWORD ON THEIR SERVERS.
I really don't see the point in the Tapulous ID.

That's fantastic, I was kind of happy (for obvious reasons) that there seemed to be a bug and it was showing my Twitter ID / Avatar.. now that it's not a bug, rather a solution I'm even happier. This is a great app and I'm happy to put it back on the top of my recommendation list. – Joshua, on July 22, 2008 05:23

Maybe the Tapulous server(s) is/are down. If so, maybe it reverts to Twitter ID/picture and just shows those? – dmetzcher, on July 22, 2008 02:13

Looks like Twitter is not quite working right now, regardless where you post from. – GR, on July 21, 2008 13:21

I think you are being a tad over dramatic Frankie. I appreciate the open dialogue from the developers and am happy to use it to post feedback and in turn receive feedback. I don't really think their needs to be critiques on critiques, the developers are doing a fine job with their support and transparency and I applaud them for it. – Joshua, on July 21, 2008 12:56

Joshua, I think they've gotten your point.
Twinkle was my favorite pre 2.0 app and I have faith that they'll fix this up for us. Personally, I think the future integration with other social networking sites is a great idea as I'm sure they'll find a way to keep it as clean as possible for the users.
If you're that upset not having the same username, why not re-register with tapulous using the same id and picture as your twitter account? I'm sure you'll get the account name since Twinkle is so new to 2.0. I wouldn't expect much spam from these guys either.
Also..... Adding/deleting buttons or functions may not be the easiest thing in the world for 2.0 developers so don't assume it is. Stop acting like you spent actual money on this potentially wonderful app and wait for some bug fixes/tweaks in the next version. I praise these guys for being so patient with all these complaints. – FrankieTears, on July 21, 2008 12:54

I was really excited about this app and heard good things about it. However, when I realized it doesn't use my Twitter avatar that was a big, big negative for me. I know it seems trivial, but in Twitter you get to know people by their avatar at quick glance. I don't want alternating avatars depending on where I post my Tweets from.
On a side note, my posts from Twinkle don't even seem to be showing up in my Twitter feed now, so I guess this app still has some bugs to work out.

The 1.1 release we're working on right now is more up-front about why you need to create a Tapulous profile. There are some other things in there that've changed, but we're going for mostly stability/performance improvements in 1.1. Features like the Name/Avatar thing will have to wait. But as someone whose primarily a Twitter user, I feel your pain when usernames aren't matching up to what I expect them to be. – Chris Clark, on July 21, 2008 08:51

I can't help but repost what @dmetzcher said earlier, these are my sentiments exactly:
> Twinkle was my favorite Twitter client before firmware 2.0. Please don't replace what we, as Twitter users, chose to include in our own Twitter profiles. Leave it alone. We obviously like it, or we wouldn't use the service. Our profile pic and user name on Twitter is all that is needed and your account ID information can be used for your games and left out of the Twitter client.

I could care less about the Tapulous profile. It was setup for that Tap Tap Tap game.
I just want the ability to see and show nothing but Twitter ID / photos. If you add more services, fine, I can turn them off I guess. But the fact that it's showing my Tapulous ID / avatar which is the deal breaker.
Anyways, thanks for the feedback. Glad to hear what's going on, it'd be cool if you guys had a way to get info from within the app because based on the iTunes reviews people have no idea what the Profile is for and why it's overriding their Twitter ID/Photo in the app. Myself included obviously.
I'll keep an eye on the app, see what happens in the next few updates. – Joshua, on July 21, 2008 04:38

We do have a preference planned for displaying avatars and names from your preferred network. However, a Tapulous profile will still be required (since the photo/nearby features hinge on it), so Twinkle still won't be the "pure" Twitter client some people are aching for. – Chris Clark, on July 21, 2008 04:30

It seems a rather easy thing to add 'Use Twitter Profile' or 'Use Tapulous Profile'. You certainly would save yourself quite a few users.
Additionally after looking at the recent iTunes review for the app it seems people on there are starting to throw their 2 cents in also.
Hope you guys end up doing the right thing by listening to your users. Good luck. – Joshua, on July 21, 2008 04:22

Twinkle started out as a Twitter-only client, but after building such an extensive backend to support photos and geolocation in a much more seamless way than our competitors, and the queueing system so that Twinkle users could keep posting even when Twitter.com is down, it became clear that we had built more than just a Twitter client.
Whether you want those features or not is evidently an issue of personal preference, and much as it pains us to turn customers away, there are plenty of alternatives if you want a Twitter-only iPhone app. I'm sorry Twinkle wasn't the right fit for you. – Chris Clark, on July 21, 2008 04:18
