When Hijacked Accounts Attack^W ReplyA reply to a recent tweet of mine looked like spam; when I checked out the user, he didn't appear to be a spambot, but I noticed he'd made several similar messages with an extra, changing last letter tacked onto the end.
When I searched for the shortened URL in the post (I haven't clicked on it and recommend nobody else do so) I found the same general message with the last letter spoof from many users. I think these accounts have been hijacked and you may want to contact the owners.
The reply to me is at the following URL: twitter.com/AndrewOlsenn/status/4452665573 (http deleted to avoid accidental linking)
Spam following is getting worse, and this is the first time I've been message spammed by a hijacked account.
Although, these could be spambots that are pumping out seemingly real tweets to avoid detection. I don't really feel like doing the full analysis, I just want it to stop!
I reported it as best I could to @spam, but it's difficult to sum things up in the 140 characters, and I am also not sure if a real human reads those tweets or if there's some automatic statistical analysis that deactivates accounts with a certain number of type of complaint, so sorry if this is the wrong venue.

Any specifics on the changes? I haven't been using BrightKite much lately in part because keeping my location reasonably current--or not completely wrong with no checkout feature--felt more like work than fun. Also, people using BK like Twitter for non-location-related posts was getting to be annoying.

That's understandable, and I agree scheduled check in would be a bad thing. It's a step worse than the problem I'm noticing (not updating and people assuming you're still someplace you left long ago) because people would see the activity and jump to erroneous conclusions.
I'd still suggest you consider some expiration on check-in or at least a freshness stamp beyond when the check in occurred. I think just being able to say "checked in at X, planning to be here for x hours/days/until-some-time" without the overhead of a check-in and a post would be good.
I don't have unlimited texting, so while the CS side of me appreciates the ack coming back, the account in my cringes and tries to count texts in my head for the month. Four messages for a checkin and a note to specify my freshness.
There was an old Microprose computer game called "Red Storm Rising" that comes to mind. It was a submarine game where they would show sonar trails and vary the color to indicate how fresh/stale the contact was--and how precise. The problem I'm experiencing (stale check-ins) reminds me of that. The big difference is I'm not trying to hit my checked-in friends with torpedoes or dodge their depth charges!
Maybe some kind of tickler or reminder system would work too. I may be a little unusual in how I've been using Brightkite--equally from my Blackberry (mostly using Opera minibrowser, not texting), my iPod Touch when I've got WiFi, and my home/work computers. Partly the expectation Apple's creating, but I really want to have platform-appropriate access to all the same services across all my devices rather than trying to have one device that does it all.
Ok, sorry for going on. I haven't really thought about location-aware applications before and it's really interesting. I wish I had your jobs!

Check Out on the WebI prefer using the web page for statuses when I have a computer handy, and I just read about the check out feature. Please add a Check Out button to the front page, under the "Search and Check In" button.

Default and Expiring Check In for the ForgetfulI would like to be able to set default locations and expire check ins so I don't have to remember to reset after a night out, appointment, or other temporary location change. When the check-in time expires, my location would automatically change to my default location. SMS format could look something like this:
@@ my_default_location
@ location !! 6h
@location !! today
@location !! 02:00
