RyanJ reported a problem in Hubdub on June 01, 2008 19:00:
Duplicate Market?Hi,
With it becoming more and more likely that Obama is going to be the nominee I'm finding some markets which will cause us some trouble in the Politics category once Obama is the official nominee.
For example here's one market titled "If Obama is nominated, who will win the Presidency?"
http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/If_Oba...
So the problem we have here is that the market will be pretty much an exact duplicate of the "Who will be the next President?" market. We do have other markets that are duplicates or very close to being and I'm trying to do some overdue spring cleaning.
But, how do we deal with this market? Right now I see two possibilties:
1. Suspend market once Clinton drop's out. This may set a bad precedent though.
2. Void the market saying it's a duplicate and that I failed to recognize the implications of this type of market beforehand.
So any thoughts?
Regards,
Ryan

I will resettle the market so that the other winners win as well. Besides that though we still need some more discussion regarding how future markets will be structured regarding RCP.
Chris told me to today that he might be able to design something that grabs the webpages at certain times, but we still need to decide on a time.

How do we structure RCP Average Markets? We've had a bit of a foul up regarding the RCP markets. In the current case although the market was settled on time, new polls came in which skewed the averages after the market had been settled thus making the original settlement false.
RCP was reporting a tie but new polls came in and changed the averages. As infernalmachine pointed out RCP is unstable as the averages are always changing as new polls come in. The problem were having with this market is the same that happened regarding earthquake markets, in that some polls are late to come in and therefore skew the results.
Because of this I think if we want to do anymore of these markets we need to come up with an exact time to settle the market. I'd propose noon on the next day (EST) so that sufficient time is given for the polls to come in. The problem which will develop though is that an admin won't always be around at that exact time to settle the market so I would have to rely on timestamped photos of the webpage, and the problem with this is that users might alter the timestamped photos.
So what do people think? How do we work with the RCP markets to make them fair and not volatile?

Is a editorial considered a report in a newspaper?Hi.
I've recently received a settlement request on this market: http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/Will_a...
The problem we have is that the "Montana secession" thing was reported, but it was reported in a editorial by a reader of the paper and not a writer for the paper. Here's a link to the editorial:
http://www.washingtontimes.com/apps/p...
So what we have to decide is what we consider a report and what we don't. For context we should remember that comments on a story on CBS from users aren't reports but postings from the individual users not employed by CBS. But in opposition to this point, the Washington Times decided to publish this letter in their paper, so is it considered a report?
Thanks for the help in the settlement, this one can prove to be tricky. Also cheers to dieseldog for sending me the settlement request.

TheDoctor asked a question in Hubdub on April 13, 2008 21:08:
How do we deal with markets with "highly" subjective language?Recently some markets (especially in the political arena) have been found using pretty blatant subjective language. Here's and example:
http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/Will_t...
The above market had stated "Will the Traitor Carter meet with Hamas officials in Syria by the end of April 2008?" I edited the market to say "Will Jimmy Carter meet with Hamas officials, in Syria, by the end of April, 2008?"
This was done to remove the contentious and subjective language in the market. "Traitor Carter" is subjective and its inclusion would only lead to unnecessary arguments between differing view points on the man, but not actually related to the market question.
So the rule amendment would be: "All questions must use objective language." So a market such as the "Traitor Carter" one would be formally disallowed because of it's subjective language.
How do people feel about this rule change? This is certainly a rule amendment we should discuss to work out all the kinks before we incorporate it into the rule book
