A comment on the question "How do I change an application's category?" in RescueTime:
In my case, MSWord comes up as "Design/Presentation", whereas I use it to write, which is my work. How can I change the tag for the time I spend in MSWord to something like "jobs", or "work"? – Peter, on July 27, 2008 19:05

Ah, that is a bit trickier - but this is what I do. I use both Parallels and VMWare Fusion on a daily basis. I have RescueTime installed on each of my virtuals (I run a Windows XP, Vista, and Ubuntu virtual). In my RescueTime.com dashboard, I have set Parallels and VMWare Fusion to be ignored. This prevents my time from being doubled up when I switch from my host os to one of the virtual os environments.
So, that way - each of the applications that I use, regardless of which virtual OS they are on, get time attributed correctly. In your case, you would now see Outlook listed as an application along with your other native OS apps. Hope that helps some! – Joe, on July 23, 2008 20:12

but what if we want our custom categories since we sometimes use apps differently. for example i use parallels to run only outlook meaning its exclusively for email but its categorized as 'dev tools' - something i dont use at all. – peter, on July 23, 2008 19:57

We recently added a voting system for categories that can be reached by going to any of the List Views. Next to the application or website you will see the current category (if one exists) and also a "Suggest" link.
When you click on the "Suggest" link you will be shown a window with a list of all of the RescueTime categories and the option to click a new category to vote on a change.
Each night we have a process that tallies the votes and if there are enough votes to override an existing category then the category for that application or site will be changed.
Thanks!
