It just dawned on me that you use the "Off the grid" feature to mean "On the grid" :) – Tom Lianza, on September 10, 2009 17:20
A comment on the idea "Quiet Checkin" in foursquare:
Interesting usage. I've seen people check in at home, so I've never associated "off the grid" with "I'm out, ping me."
The "off the grid" status is too ambiguous to be useful to me, thus far. But, I do see how in some circles it can take on a meaning. – Tom Lianza, on August 19, 2009 18:04

If the 3-slider UX is confusing, I'd also throw out the suggestion to simply replace the "tell my friends" slider with this one.
If people really want to go somewhere, and have it be a complete secret from everyone, they shouldn't bother checking in at all. That, to me, is an odd use case.
A far more common use case is to check in somewhere benign (as commenters have mentioned) and just not want to push a message to everyone.

Is there a way to filter by date in the API?Is there a way to filter by date in the API? In particular I'd like to be able to grab stories that were accepted in the last 24 hours so they can be posted to a team notification system.-

A comment on the question "Oauth multipart file upload/post" in OAuth:
This doesn't work for me... nor does it seem right. As the other post noted, the content-type always comes across as application/x-www-form-urlencoded despite the fact that you're manually setting the content type. In addition, I'm seeing the file body come across as a form post parameter, which per the OAuth spec would suggest that it should participate in the signing process, which doesn't seem right. So... I'm a bit confused on this one. Could you perhaps post more of your code - like the receiver's side? Thanks! – tom, on May 20, 2009 23:15-

tom replied on March 08, 2009 18:22 to the idea "Add functionality for "shout-outs", essentially non-location specific notes (for incoming dodgeball users)" in Brightkite:
Even though notes are "supposed to be" about a location, can't you just treat them the same as shout-outs? The current feature seems good enough to me. If they were to implement a non-location-centric notion of notes, I'd strongly prefer not adding a second concept (ex. "notes" plus "shout outs") rather just allow someone to post a note without a location, in order to keep the list of options short and the confusion minimal.
tom asked a question in Pivotal Labs on February 09, 2009 02:19:
Is PivotalTracker suitable as a bug tracker? We have a small team, but routinely want to keep somewhere around 100-200 bugs/enhancements "on the radar." Has anyone tried using PivotalTracker for this purpose, or is the expected behavior to keep a separate bug tracker, and only use PivotalTracker for managing estimated features?
As a follow up-question, assuming you use both tools, do you pull bugs out of the bug system and into tracker to ensure you have an accurate view of velocity based on the real work being done? Any best practices would be appreciated.
Thanks!

tom asked a question in Brightkite on January 16, 2009 02:31:
Former dodeball user - why the 4000 meter limit?I'd like to be notified when friends check in more than 4000 meters away. If we're in the same city, I can easily cab/drive/bus to a location that's more than that distance away.
