How can I use YouData to help monetize my web site or blog?
Trae replied on October 01, 2008 16:23 to the question "What keeps someone from getting rich watching ads?" in YouData:
Great question!
On one hand - nothing should stop a consumer from clicking on as many ads as she likes. As long as the consumer is delivering her product (attention to the ads), it's a fair deal for MeFile and Advertiser.
However, there are actually a number of factors that will discourage a consumer from over-clicking without delivering value to the advertiser. Here are just 3 examples:
1) The price a consumer attaches to her attention actually functions as a nice filter for the advertising. Since the advertiser no longer has to waste money sending irrelevant ads to the wrong type of consumer, and can choose EXACTLY the type of consumer that should receive the ad, the offers sent to each MeFile should end up fairly relevant. In other words, in most cases, the consumer should be genuinely interested in the ad. The money is just a small bonus and added incentive.
2) Our system allows advertisers to set up several control parameters on their campaigns such as "if this person has consumed 10 ads in 10 minutes, withdraw my offer for 48 hours." The MeFile owner stands to actually lose offers by over-clicking.
3) Consumers will learn to play a little hard-to-get. By default, our ad players present offers to the consumer highest-offer-first. As offers are matched with a MeFile, they are placed in the MeFile's "Queue" where they actually compete with each other on price according to parameters set by the advertiser. Like an eBay for the MeFile's attention, advertisers bid to get toward the top of the list. As a consumer clicks through a bunch of ads in one sitting, she is actually working her way down the list with each ad offer getting smaller and smaller, until all she is seeing are minimum offers. If she instead plays a little hard-to-get, and lets the auction take place, the offers have time to compete, and the offer amounts go up. In economic terms, when a consumer over-clicks, she is flooding the market with a supply of her attention, while demand stays about the same, thus sending the prices down. In a perfect example of supply and demand from ECON 101, a little scarcity will raise the price!

What keeps someone from getting rich watching ads?As a consumer, can't I just watch ads all day and rack up the dough?
As an advertiser, what keeps someone from just clicking away just to get paid?
Trae replied on September 25, 2008 21:48 to the question "Why do I need to provide my cellular phone number? And what does YouData do with it?" in YouData:
The issue comes up often during the sign up process, usually in the form of the following 2 questions:
1) Why do I have to provide my cell phone number?
The only reason we require a cellular number is to prevent any individual from creating more than one MeFile in the system. If we did not have such a strict control in place, a few might be tempted to create multiple MeFiles. This would erode the confidence of the advertisers in the quality of the attention they are purchasing, and lower the prices they are willing to bid for your attention.
We encourage consumers to think of your relationship with advertisers as a business. (Corner the market on you.TM) Advertisers are your customers. You want to ensure your customers that your product (your attention) is high quality and "bonafide". By validating against your cell phone, and piggy-backing on all the validation that your carrier did when you got your phone, you are ensuring quality. They pay more for quality. Good business right?
2) What are these guys going to do with my cell number?
Truly nothing. We will never call you or text you without you having explicitly asked for it. We will never give it to anyone else. Advertisers will never see it. We securely store it with the MeFile to ensure nobody else can create a MeFile using that number.
Hope this helps!
