Settings to use port 443 in Pigin
How should I configure things in Pigin to slip through firewalls that block all ports but 443 and 80? I've been able to configure Pigin to connect to Google's XMPP network; however, I can't connect to notify.me using similar settings. Specifically, I have set the following in the advance tab for the notify.me account:

Require SSL/TLS: unchecked (I also tried w/ this checked)
Force old (port 5223) SSL: checked
Allow plaintext auth over unencrypted stream: unchecked
    Connect port: 443
    Connect server: notify.me (I also tried secure.notify.me)
    File transfer proxies: proxy.jabber.org
    BOSH URL: blank

Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated!

(BTW, I looked for Pigin's logs, but only found chat related logs; if they would be helpful and you know where they are, please let me know.)

    TIA!

    Hi Jim,

Thanks for the confirmation and help on this one. The additional wildcards would come in handy. I've also thought of a few more filter operations that would be useful:

    * Filter by date
    * Filter by author
    * Filter by diggs
    * Filter by number of Delicious bookmarks
    * Filter by number of inbound links
    * Filter by number of comments
    * Filter by number other social networking criteria

For date, it would be helpful if it were possible to specify a range, relative dates (e.g., today, yesterday, this month, this week, this year), and calculated dates (e.g., today - 6 weeks). I know this sounds complex, but this is the sort of thing you get from RRD, Windows Desktop Search, and others. It's really nice when dates can be specified to such a degree.

Here are some examples of how such filters might look.

after:last month before:today (entries newer than one month ago)
after:4/1/8 before:last month (entries newer than April 1, 2008 but older than one month ago)
after:4/1/8 before:6/1/8 (entries posted between April and June 1)
after:last month (entries posted in the last month)
author:"Travis Spencer" OR author:spencer205 (entries written by me)
digg:10 (entries dug on DIgg 10 times or more)
delicious:15 (entries bookmarked in Delicious 15 times or more)
inbound-link-count: 4 (entries that have been linked to 4 times or more)
twitter:5 (entries that have been tweeted 5 or more times)

You could do a lot more too. With this sort of capability comes extreme power. When can I have this ;-)

    Travis Spencer
Thank you, Ilya, for the answer. I understand that the different URLs would be ranked differently because HTTP and HTTPS would be bookmarked, linked to, etc. different numbers of times effecting each page's respective rank. However, as a user of your service, I found it to be very unintuitive. It also made me suspicious of your service's accuracy. As you guys are in a time of building trust and establishing your reputation, I would suggest that you guys consider treating HTTP and HTTPS URLs as identical if they are only different by an S (https:// vs http://). As such, the rank would be the combination of both HTTP and HTTPS.

Blog entries showing up twice in feed
    Hi There,

Can some at PR explain two things to me?

    1. Why are blog entries showing up twice in this feed: http://www.postrank.com/feed/31df630f...

    2. Why do the identical blog entries have different rankings?

    Hi Brian,

I have another question: Can you use the native Windows Cardspace selector with the Higgins Firefox add-in? The add-in wants me to enter the path the EXE to launch; however, the native Cardspace selector on Windows is run by executing dllhost.exe with some command line arguments (that I can't figure out).

Do you have any ideas how to use this add-in w/ the native Cardspace selectors on Windows? If you want to take this discussion off the list, you can get in touch w/ me at travislspencer+spam@gmail.com (without the "+spam" bit of course).

    Thanks,

    Hi Brian,

Am I correct that your Firefox extension just starts an Info Card selector (like the Cardspace selector that comes w/ .NET 3+) when it finds a certain OBJECT tag in an HTML page? If so, I would like to use it independently of AZ. The Firefox add-ins that do this on Windows are still immature. Thus, I would like to try yours to see if it is any better. Is your add-in based on some other open source add-in?

Word filters: Boolean operators, stemming, and exact phrases
    Hi All,

I would like to filter feeds using typical Boolean operators. I've read that negation is supported (if used with some other non-negated term). But what about disjunctions? I would like to filter a feed on X or Y. Does PostRank support the use of typical operators for this purpose: "OR" or "|". What about parenthesis? Can I do something like this: "((A OR B) (Y OR Z)) -C". Are exact phrases supported by quoting them? Are the words in the filter stemmed? For instance, if I create a filter using the word "craft", will "crafting", "crafts", "crafters", etc. also be included or only, literally the word "craft"?

    TIA!

Entries of feed created by scrapping site without feed ranked as 5
I created a feed by scrapping HTML from a site that doesn't have a bonafide feed. You can read about how I did this on my blog. When I view that feed in Google Reader w/ the PostRank add-in installed, the rank for all entries is 5. How is that possible?!

    Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the response. I'm satisfied with those answers, but I'm not sure you completely groked the need to pass arbitrary data in/out of the service when initiating calls. You can check out my blog post on this issue and my experience using the Twilio service at http://travisspencer.com/blog/2008/12....

    Suggestions to improve the API
    Good Morning All,

I used the Twilio service to create a Twitter bot that would call folks when it received a direct message. It would then post a URL to to the recording as an update. It was fun to write, and I have some suggestions after doing so that would have made it easier:

    1. I really don't understand why the RESTful API used to initiate a new calls (/2008-08-01/Accounts/{YourAccountSid}/Calls) needs a URL pointing to the TwiML. It would be easier to use and more efficient if the TwiML could be included when making that request. I wouldn't have to maintain another file either, making my document management easier.

    2. It would have been nice if I was able to pass some data when initiating the call and have this returned to me when the callback was invoked. (This may be possible, but I wasn't able to figure it out if it is. I saw that notification instance resources contain request variables, but I wasn't sure if this could be set by my client when initiating the call. Because of this, I wasn't able to, for example, say in the Twitter bot's update who recorded a message. To do this, I would have to pass that when starting the call and get it back when handling the callback from Twilio.)

This is the conversation that I ended up with:

    1. Client C calls /2008-08-01/Accounts/{YourAccountSid}/Calls on the Twilio server S passing in URL U to a TwiML document X
    2. S requests U and parses out the callback URL B from X
    3. S makes a phone call
    4. S sends a message to B (the callback)
    5. B updates Twitter status by calling that service's API using the the RecordingUrl (given to B from S)

(If I am right that notifications could have been used to pass arbitrary data, the number of request/response messages needed in this conversation would have been increased by approx. 50% - 100%.)

If the TwiML document X could have been passed instead of U, the number of requests/responses would have been reduced to this:

    1. C calls /2008-08-01/Accounts/{YourAccountSid}/Calls on S passing X (and Caller and Called as before)
    2. S makes a phone call
    3. S sends a message to B
    4. B updates twitter

Ideally, this is what I would have been able to do:

    1. C calls /2008-08-01/Accounts/{YourAccountSid}/Calls on S passing X and arbitrary data D
    2. S makes phone call
    3. S sends a message to B including D (and RecodingUrl as before)
    4. B updates twitter using RecordingUrl and D

Having said all this, I think that Twilio is a great service, and I'm excited to see what the future holds for it.

A comment on the problem "Ranking threshold ignored as seen by Google Reader Firefox add-in" in PostRank:

    Travis Spencer
    Hi Melanie,

Can you point me to the really long, technical explanation because I didn't quite follow the short, non-technical one? I understand that there are two different types of analysis going on and one overloaded, ranking number is being shown in multiple UIs. Given this, I'm sure you aren't surprised that your users are a bit confused.

If I may offer my opinion, I would suggest adding different ranking numbers for the different algorithms. If the FF add-in is showing me thematic ranking, indicate that some how (e.g., a different icon that the one shown on the PostRank.com Web UI or two different ranking numbers for the two different calculation procedures). In the PostRank Web UI, if the algorithm being used is feed-based, indicate this some how (e.g., using words like relative best rather than best and provide a link to a not-so-technical overview and an in-depth overview of what's going on). – Travis Spencer, on November 25, 2008 22:28

I found another discrpency. This time between what the FF plug-in shows and what the Web UI shows on the PostRank site. Check this out:

The same feed, same blog entries, with different ranked values. That doesn't make sense.

If anyone can clarify this for me, I would appreciate it.
