I'm not sure it would be a good thing to have two different types of membership. Wouldn't the 'readers' feel a little inferior to the 'writers'? I'm not saying they would 'be' inferior, just that they might feel like 2nd class citizens.
There are plenty of Protagonize members who've never written anything. I don't know, but I suspect they probably outnumber the active ones! I'm sure nobody thinks they're rude. Some people may even join with the sole purpose of reading, and, decide to have a crack at writing something later on down the line, but if they don't it doesn't matter. And, in the end, it's always free to read anything on Protag, whether they sign up or not, but that way, they can't comment on your work.
Maybe they could fill in their profile to say they're there to read, so that they don't get pestered to write something.

Children's/YA categoriesHi Nick, I was just looking at Chris/Arystokrat's children's poem, and it reminded me that I've been meaning to ask for ages if we could have either a combined "Children's/Young Adult" category, or two separate ones.-

Linear Story as default, to help new users?I think this is another "default setting" which causes problems.
I have noticed a lot of newbies recently have started stories as "Addventures" and have ended the first branch with two titles chosen off the top of their head. Often, it's two tags, or categories, such as "humour", "poetry", Story", "fun" or whatever, or occasionally they call the two branches "Chapter One" and "Chapter Two", which is obviously not going to work for branches.
Sometimes it's obvious that they don't want anyone to add, anyway, but if they do, these rather odd titles don't exactly encourage people to do so and the story almost always ends up being "orphaned".
If you were to change the default setting for new stories to "Linear", I think this problem could be avoided. I'm sure people would still start Addventures, because they're fun, but I think the majority start off with a Linear Story anyway. If people were to read the "Getting Started" section before they started a story, I don't think the problem would arise, but we all know it's human nature not to "read the instruction booklet" first, so sometimes they need a little help!

Eric, I think sometimes it may catch words with a profanity included within the letters. It wasn't on Protagonize, but last year I wrote a comment on a similar site which included the English place name Scunthorpe. It wasn't allowed lol.
The other day, I signed a comment on Parky's profile, in "nonsense" stylee, because we're writing my nonsense poem "Love Story from a Strange Land" together (shameless plug - check it out) and he calls me things like Toshy and I call him Porko and so on... well I signed it Tashity and the filter didn't like that either. :D

Commenting on specific branches/chaptersHi Nick.
This is a minor thing really, but something which comes up from time to time. Occasionally, someone comments on the entire story when they meant the comment for a specific branch or chapter, then nobody knows which one they're talking about.
At the moment, the story comments are set for "entire story" as the default, so it's very easily done. I was just wondering if you could solve this one by setting "this branch" as the default? After all, I think most of us, if we comment, do so straight away. Sometimes it *is* more appropriate to assign the comment to the whole piece, but more often we're talking about a particular contribution.
