Here's something to try:

In normal (not Edit mode), copy the contents of the table and paste it into Notepad (or some text-only editor). You should get a tab-delimited list resembling your table. Copy this and paste it back into your wiki (now in Edit mode), and it should get rid of that.

If your wiki is public, I can also take a look at the page in question to try to figure out what is going on.

How do I get rid of annoying grey background?

I copied a table from our old web site to the wiki and the data in the first column has an annoying grey background that did not appear on the old web page, nor does it appear in the edit mode. I tried changing the fill color, but obviously that didn't work. I am brave enough to go into the code and make changes, but I am not knowledgeable enough to make the right changes. Help!

That is exactly what that means. Three shall be the number or the tabs, and the number of the tabs shall be three. Their names are SideBar, QuickStart, and RecentActivity.

You can't have two Sidebars, but you can edit the information in the QuickStart tab as well.

And we don't let you rename the SideBar, it's a special thing that we've programmed into the wiki.

If you're good at formatting, you might want to check out this thread here (http://getsatisfaction.com/pbwiki/top...) - it has instructions on how to move the SideBar to the other side. One tip - Don't worry if you mess it up at first, the fun thing about a wiki is you can always change it back and experiment.

In PBwiki 2.0, you can collapse the SideBar, and it will stay collapsed, but I don't know if that's just for you, or if it collapses for everyone. I think it's a cookie thing that makes it only collapsed for you when you go back to the page.

Can you have 2 sidebars? Can you rename the sidebar tab? Can you change the location of the sidebar on the pages? (like on the left instead of the right?) Can you have the sidebar on some pages and not others?

Do you have the SideBar with the little tab? If that's the case, then you're allowed two other tabs, QuickStart and RecentActivity. Just create new pages named "QuickStart" and "RecentActivity" respectively and they'll automatically be added to your wiki.
