ah, but that's different here, the rectangular vertical area is a frame used by adsense (google ads), normally filled with advertising (that's what i see when i access the page) that sometimes that gets filled (by google) with a filler that is located on our site - when they have no ads to show, and that filler contains the facebook link. this is part understood (and i have no way easy to change any of that - but normally if the loading is fast, the white rectangle is not visible).
the problem i have is with the large white square (which stay visible a long time). but i'll figure it out.

ouch. thanks! shows_ads.js is the google adsense script. you are right, i will try disabling the various javascript pieces to find what causes that.
i tried debugging the js code using the Firefox javascript debugger, but infortunately the code on this pages causes an internal error in the javascript debugger :(
thanks for the time you took to look into this! – tristan, on November 17, 2009 13:54

large white square aparently caused by js-kit script loading
large white square appears during page loading, and seems to be related to js-kit.
the large white square appears while the browser indicates "loading data from js-kit".
you can reproduce the problem when loading this page with Firefox or Chrome:
http://pt.loupiote.com/photos/9195695...
could this white square be caused by one of the beacons that you are using?
i'll try to debug and investigate more, but i find strange that the message "loading data from cs.js-kit" appears (on Firefox) while the white square is visible...
however it might just be a coincidence, since there are several other asynchronous pieces of javascript code being loaded into this page...
A comment on the question "dynamically-added tracking code at top of body causes problem" in JS-Kit:
well, since i noticed this issue, i changed the layout in my code, and it does not trigger this anymore in the browser. the 2 div's that are dynamically created by js-kit are still there of course, but they do not cause the layout issue anymore.i'll let you know the next time i see the issue. – tristan, on November 16, 2009 08:45

the html code that i included in my post disapeared, so here it is again:
the first one is <div class="jska-wrapper" style="display: none; "> i think this object is jused for login purposes.
The problem is with a second DIV containing a tracking Flash object:
<div><object id="atff" data="//bin.clearspring.com/at/v/1/button1.6.swf" height="1px" width="1px" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"></div>

dynamically-added tracking code at top of body causes problemjs-kit ads a DOM tracking object at the beginning of the BODY which causes one visible line-break (at the top) on the document.
it seems that js-kit dynamically adds two DIVs at the top of the BODY.
the first one isi think this object is jused for login purposes.
The problem is with a second DIV containing a tracking Flash object:
this "DIV" is not invisible, and the 1x1 pixel "object" enclosed (a tracking flash object) causes in some cases the browser to display the DIV an one empty line.
this is a problem. i think the problem could be alleviated by setting the enclosing DIV size to 1x1 pixel (or at least height=1px).

maybe this sort of abusive lawsuits can happen in the US. but js-kit (the maker of this widget) is not a US company. – tristan, on November 11, 2009 02:14

direct link to access the "Buy prints" dialog overlayDirect link to access the "Buy prints" dialog overlay (from an outside site), to improve conversion ratio for "pro" members. Currently getting the "Buy prints" dialog overlay requires 2 clicks (after getting to the smugmug image page). I want to be able to reach this dialog without those 2 clicks!

smugmug not working when accessed through google translatorsmugmug not working when accessed through google translator (photos don't display in photo pages, and not possible to order prints). you should add the CSS class "notranslate" in the BODY of all your pages to tell google translator that it should not try to translate your pages.

> In this case you need to enable "Require anonymous users to authenticate before leaving comments" option.
i don't want to require authentication. i do want to allow guests (anonymous) users to post, and that's why my site is configuted this way.
of course, i am fully aware that it is easier for spammers to post as guests, but still if there was an option to disallows any comment that contains a link or URL, this would not be such a problem.
if such an option was available, i would use it, since it is very unlikely that someone would want to post a link in my comments - besides spammers.
and by the way, spammers often have way to authenticate (look at flickr: it is plagged by spammers who are able to automatically create any number of yahoo accounts automatically, and then post spam on flickr). so requiring authentication would certainely reduce the number of "legit" comments, but the relative amount of spam (vs legit comments) will probably remain the same.
as long as spammers are allowed to post a comment that contains a link to their website, they have an incentive to post spam.

i already mentioned it to Anna Shtraus who works for js-kit. this is quite an obvious idea, and i would hope that some people in charge of the spam issue know about it, if they are not completely brainless :)

every day i receive several of those spam js-kit comment like the one i left
on this page:
http://www.loupiote.com/photos/318133...
basically they contain a URL to a site being adverised by spamming
js-comments.
i also get many similar type of spam by email, so clearly this is a new
genre of spam that spammers are using the last few months. could you do
something to prevent those?
or maybe, could you offer an option to prevent people from posting any HTML
link in thier comments, until this spam problem gets resolved? if links are
not allowed in comments, it would remove an incentive for spammers to try to
get people to click on them.
please let me know what you think of that, and how your Akismet friends
intend to deal to that.-
