TruthWrangler replied on March 01, 2008 21:50 to the question "Politics Market Quarrels" in Hubdub:
I would cheerlead for questions like this, that are listed in the "Official Hubdub Forum" also be referenced in the "Comments" section of the market they reference.
This is not a finger-pointy comment about this question, as there are an astounding number of questions posted here asking for user-feedback that are not referenced in the comments of the applicable question.
I would hazard a guess that less than 5% of the registered Hubdub users are registered to use this forum (due, in large measure to the confusion that one needs to register anew on this board) -- and, in my view, trying to gather user feedback about a specific market, without informing that market, is irresponsible.
In many instances, settlement rules have been decided in this Forum, settlement decisions have been reversed, and no mention that the discussion was taking place -- or even that changes had been made -- other than in the 9pt type of the "Settlement Details" -- was posted in the affected market!
It's my hope, that moving forward, all changes to Settlement Details that could significantly change the meaning of the original question, and all discussions about specific markets debated here, be referenced in the "Comments" of the market involved, as a "Hubdub Best Practice".
TruthWrangler replied on March 01, 2008 00:48 to the question "Escalation: Got some rock to sell on eBay?" in Hubdub:
To restate my earlier comments in this thread succinctly:
No, this is not a claim.
In my view, "claim" is to assert a fact ... even if that fact is not true.
This eBay seller asserted a "maybe" ... by claiming this is "Probably a part of the spy satellite ..."
If the seller had said (claimed), "this is a fragment of the 'spy satellite' ", that would be settled as a "Yes". Even if it wasn't true.
I had/have no H$ in this market.
TruthWrangler replied on February 29, 2008 19:07 to the problem "New leaderboard question settlement dispute" in Hubdub:
I did not have any H$ in this market.
I agree with the OP that this was wrongly decided.
Will Hubdub invent a new leaderboard where you can see more than the first twenty people this month?
In order for this to be "Yes", relative to deciding to settle this with the "friends Leaderboard", I would have to have all of the top twenty-one people in my friends list -- AND have every other user that could move into the "top twenty-one" position, at any point in time.
While theoretically, the Friends Leaderboard might have the capability of doing that -- assuming it can reference 5000+ users in every user's "My Friends" section -- in my view it's unpersuasive to hold that users would want to do this, or would do this.
Users would also need to continually add new users as they join, and all requests to "be a friend" would need to be responded to affirmatively.

Well, I tried groopit.com, and (also) couldn't connect.
I tried a couple hours later, and did connect. Then I tried the blog, and was successful.
BTW, javascript was always enabled.
I did notice there was one comment on the blog:
Posted in hubdub | 1 Comment »
when I clicked on the link, I would only get a screen telling me I must be logged in to post a comment ... I was unable to read the comment -- if there was one.
And yes, Vista sucks. I just bought a new Mac Pro 64-bit desktop to upgrade the Mac side ;-)

I consistently have difficulty in accessing the blog site.
I've tried using the url in your post, as well as the more generic <http://blog.hubdub.com/> with the latest versions of both IE and Firefox (Vista OS).
I've previously experienced difficulty, however I have, on at least one occasion, been able to connect to the blog.
I have no difficulty in accessing the Hubdub site.
I'm very much aware this could be a user/browser/local connection/OS issue. Notwithstanding, I thought I'd bring it to your attention.
TruthWrangler replied on February 29, 2008 15:32 to the idea "Proposed rule amendments" in Hubdub:
I agree with InfernalMachine re: Fox.
I've also noticed a Hubdub preference for CNN as a source -- CNN in it's glory days *was* the definitive source. It both covered the world, and was world-class. However, since it was bought, their legion of top quality reporters have left; "Headline News" is gone, and much of what's left of CNN is tabloid.
I would rank ABC and/or NBC (includes MSNBC) significantly above CNN.

TruthWrangler reported a problem in Hubdub on February 28, 2008 23:34:
Bug (?) Countdown TimerThe Countdown Timer appears to be running fast.
Several questions are displayed as closing sooner than the actual Suspend Time.
As I write this it is 3:25pm PST, and a question set to suspend at 5:00pm PST is displayed as suspending in 1 hour -- a difference of more than an hour.
Suspend date: Today 5pm PST (1 hour)
Example: <http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/Will_A...>
I 'm pretty sure I've seen the "Suspend Time" with a difference greater than 1 hour -- but I don't have examples at hand.

TruthWrangler replied on February 28, 2008 04:26 to the question "Escalation: Got some rock to sell on eBay?" in Hubdub:
hmmm ... the Australian based eBay seller, in his/her own words doesn't claim the object is part of the, so called, spy satellite.
Rather the claim is that this is "Probably a part of the spy satellite “USA 193” ... " and "probably came down in Germany."
The seller further disclaims the object by stating " ... unfortunately we can ́t take any responsibility for the correctness of those information."
IMNHO, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to parse this "claim".
TruthWrangler replied on February 27, 2008 17:48 to the question "Escalation: Got some rock to sell on eBay?" in Hubdub:
So we thought a fair way to settle it would be if the auction was reported in a news site. However, several users who have staked cash on the question aren't happy with this change to the settlement rules.
This is a test case, so whatever is decided here will be used in future for questions referring to an eBay auction.
I don't know that I agree with the conditions of the second sentence (above) being applied to the first.
It seems to contravene the spirit of the newly proposed "Rule Amendments" -- posted earlier on this board:
2.2.1 Subject to change
• Any rule change may be applied retrospectively on a case-by-case basis.
With regard to the original question about fragment debris being posted on eBay, I think the intent of the original poster was clear -- and it was a light, lively, fun and topical question. (FYI, I have no H$ on this question.)
One can often make suggestions as to how a question can either be improved, or have additional conditions -- and, in many instances, these are helpful.
With this question, adding the condition that "the auction be reported in a news site" does, in my view, place a significant barrier on the question, and is not fair to those who made predictions on the question as originally asked.
Going forward, as this is a "news related" site, it would make sense that an auction be reported by a credible media outlet. Without it, taken to the extreme, one could create tens of thousands of questions such as "Will a 1955 Chevy be auctioned on eBay by dd-mm-yyyy?" -- or "Will more than 500 photos of a kitten be uploaded to flickr by dd-mm-yyyy?"
However, with respect to the original eBay question, I would "view it on a case-by-case basis", not as a precedent, and either let the the question go forward without the condition of "the auction be reported in a news site", or, failing that, void the question.

As an aside, I, too, always thought that 5% was the lowest percentage that could be set.
I recently created a question with a 2% range.
<http://www.hubdub.com/e/Market/Will_a...>
My sense is that the range is [now] 1-99% ... but I don't know. Perhaps the accurate range can be incorporated in the next revision of the "Good Question" information.
