It's not that we're griping about losing something we never paid for... its that we're griping that we were never given an option to pay for it in order to keep it up and running, and to keep Rael well off enough to not need a job. Oh well, thanks Rael for putting together the export utility... I've pulled all my info, and it looks like everything is there. If there's any way you can twist Twitter's arm into kicking off an official return of Sandy (for a monthly fee)...
Thanks again for getting the export tool put together. It has helped me move on (literally and figuratively). – Twitter User, on December 03, 2008 22:54

I have ADD, and have struggled with it for over 2 decades. My ADD had caused me to earn horrible grades in college, get $175 tickets for forgetting to renew my tags, get called by the IRS for forgetting to file my business taxes in a timely manner each quarter, and caused all sorts of trouble in my marriage. I have tried everything every doctor/psychiatrist/psychologist has recommended in order to remedy my inattentiveness and forgetfulness, but nothing has worked.
That all changed when I started to use the I Want Sandy service. I was suddenly relieved of the stresses of remembering everything I had to do each day. I no longer worried about my schedule for the next morning. There were no barriers to creating reminders (I just cc'd Sandy, and poof! I had a reminder. No excuses for not creating a reminder because it was just so EASY.) In effect, Sandy cured me of all the bad side effects of my ADD. It worked so well, that I was telling my ADD friends that they needed this service too!
Now you rip all of that away, for what? Money? I would have paid DEARLY to have this service - $5 per month?!? That's cheap. I would have paid $25 per month for this life saving service!
Now, I'm in a panic, trying to figure out how I will cope with returning to the nightmare of disorganization which I had finally pulled out of. You think this is just an inconvenience? This is a total change in my ability to cope with life. I know that there are some who will mock my dependence on Sandy, and tell me that I should not have put so much trust in an online free app, but all I can say is - I had no other avenue of relief!
I'm still reeling from the insanity of this whole situation. You had how many users? Even if I conservatively say that you had 10,000 users, the enormity of what you just dumped astounds me as an entrepreneur. I hope Twitter gave you over $1 million for your IP, because I Want Sandy's potential revenue over 5 years was $3 million if you only charged your user base $5 per month!!! Even if you assume 2/3rds would say "screw you" when you started to charge, you'd still have had over $16,000 per MONTH in revenue... just how much is Twitter paying you per month? Is it over $15k per month? If not, you really really screwed yourself over. What a waste of an invaluable IP. What a waste of such a wonderful project. What a waste.
I'm sick and disgusted and have decided that the only safe option available to me is to write my own app. Web 2.0 is nice, but because of this, I cannot trust another small time company with the organization of my life. I hope I can survive the craziness of disorganization long enough to create a comparable application to keep myself organized and not fail out of my 3rd attempt at school... Rael, I hope you understand now that it was not the shortness of notice that pisses us off... it was that you gave us every indication that you would be around for the long haul. Many out there are likely like me having come to trust that your service would keep our lives in order. Your decision to take care of yourself and to heck with your customer base doesn't just affect you. You have torn apart the lives of hundreds if not thousands of people. I hope you realize the damage you've done to people's trust in you, trust in Twitter, and trust in Web 2.0 applications as a whole.
Ugh... words just can't express my disappointment and bitterness at your selfish decision.-

Twitter User shared an idea in I want Sandy on November 05, 2008 18:46:
When I add a reminder to call Jim Jones, I'd like the reminder to automatically include Jim's contact information as well.I'd like to be able to retrieve a contact's information dynamically based on that person's name in the reminder.
Here's what I mean:
Let's say in the past, I've created a Contact with the name of Jim Jones who has a phone number of 215-555-1212, an email address of jjones@example.com, and has a Notes value of "wife's name is Alexia"
I cc Sandy with the following comment in the body:
Sandy, remind me to call Jim Jones about Procurement renegotiation on Thursday at 3:00pm.
The reminder is set up as an appointment for 3:00pm on Thursday, and the text for the reminder is "Call Jim Jones (phone:215-555-1212, email:jjones@example.com, Notes: Wife's - Alexia, 10 yr old daughter Ariel likes horses, 12yr old son Joe likes baseball) about Procurement renegotiation."
Basically, I want Sandy to do the lookup automatically for me when I mention a name, and if there is information, include it in the reminder so I don't have to do a lookup later.
Many phones even would allow "clicking" on the phone number to make a call or "clicking" on the email address to send an email or txt message to that email address. This would really make Sandy powerful for those of us that can never remember a person's phone number or email address or their wife's name, etc. ("Phone:", "Cell Phone:", and "Notes:" all are valid contact details - having them sent automatically would be very useful and time saving).
This would make Sandy a lot more useful for a business person too - imagine scheduling a meeting to discuss lowering the cost of goods regularly procured from one of your suppliers. You receive a reminder about the meeting, and in that reminder are details about Jim, that he has a wife named Alexia, a 10 year old girl named Ariel who likes horses, and a 12 year old boy named Joe who likes baseball. When you call up Jim, you are able to easily and naturally say at some point in the call, "oh, I was at a Phillies game this weekend and got a ballcap for Joe - let's get together next week for lunch so I can give it to you." and then ending the call with "Say hello to your lovely wife Alexia for me, and tell little Ariel that there's a pony show coming to town on Thursday - I heard about it on the radio this morning, and remembered that she likes horses." and then wrap up the call appearing to have remembered all the minutia of Jim's life (and actually being able to care because you actually did remember to get that ballcap because the meeting was coming up). This would make an enormous impression, and would make a good business case for a company paying to use Sandy for all of their management.
I know it's asking a lot, but if Sandy could also know the difference between "call Jim Jones" and "email Jim Jones", and only return the phone number (plus Notes) or the email (plus notes) that'd be nice (but I know that it wouldn't be as easy!).-
