Nevermind! I can't tell you how happy I am to find that there is a new version of Orb, and upon testing it with a playist that is entirely lowercase file paths, it sees and plays them perfectly over my XBox.

So, technically, this is really no longer an issue. Though I would love for the "File Location" column in SB to display with correct case. It's not important to the proper functioning of my media library now, it would just be nice.

Looking at that wiki article, personally, I'd rather do the deletion of the data myself manually, since it says that if you're not careful with the command you could cause issues. One person commented on that article about where to find the folders to delete, but those are Vista paths. I found them in XP and thought I'd share that with others that are uncomfortable with running the command.

    1. You have to have your folder options set to show hidden files.

    2. Go to "C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\"

    3. Delete the "Songbird2" directory there.

    4. Go to "C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\"

    5. Delete the "Songbird2" directory there.

Deleting those two folders cleared it up for me so that I was able to do a true clean reinstall of Songbird.

It looks like this has been a long-standing problem. In this similar topic an employee replied that they know of the problem and are trying to fix it. But that was about a year ago. Is there anything actually being done to resolve this issue at all? I found a lot of similar problem topics, but somehow this issue doesn't seem to be a priority at all.

I just reinstalled my OS and am trying to restore Songbird (including my playlists) back to how they were from my music library and playlists backup. But i'm tempted to just recreate each of my massive playlists from scratch, since it would be just as annoying and pointless to import them all, then go through and delete all the duplicates, careful not to delete the ones that are in the playlists... I agree completely with Amitola85, except that it should also ignore the case of the file paths, since there seems to be some issues with reliable file path text cases, at least in my SB (SB v.1.2.0, Win XP Pro SP3).

Oh my. So very simple. No idea why I couldn't put that together, myself. Thank you much, Michael. – UltimusRex, on October 01, 2009 14:45

I just installed the Tagger addon and it looks powerful, indeed... but I'm not understanding how to use the tokens, or whatever, to copy the contents of the Artist tag to the Album Artist tag. I would Ideally like to select all of my library, or at least a very large chunk of it at a time and have it copy the varying Artist tags for each of the songs to the respective song's Album Artist tag. – UltimusRex, on October 01, 2009 09:29

    1. Compilations

I may have this completely the wrong way, but I don't understand what the problem with compilations is. I have many albums that are compilations. I put 'Various' in the album artist field, and then the album name, so they are all neatly organised by Songbird in a 'Various' folder (I personally use the year as a subfolder, and then the album title as a further subfolder). In fact, I think Songbird has a clear advantage here, because many other programmes do not use an 'album artist' field.

    2. Ignored folders

I am running two Songbird profiles, so that I can have different options enabled for different music collections. This means that not all of my music is available under a single profile, but this is fine for my purposes.

Lowercase file paths in Songbird don't translate to Orb streaming software
I have Songbird 1.2.0 installed and use it to manage and play my music library on my computer. I also use the Orb streaming software to stream .m3u playlists to my game consoles and other computers. Unfortunately, the only way to export playlists in SB (.m3u or any other type) is with the use of the playlist export addon which seems like a particularly messy addon to me (but that's a different story). Orb recognizes and streams the .m3u playlists problem free, as long as the file path noted in the .m3u file uses the correct case, that is, with a capital drive letter, and the proper (title) case format I've used to name all my directories and .mp3 files.

This worked flawlessly many months ago, when the "File Location" column in the Songbird library was correctly displaying the paths in the correct case. A short time after I first installed Songbird, I noticed that all the new music I imported showed the "File Location" as all lowercase, and I soon realized that those songs referenced in all lowercase were not being played in my playlists via my consoles & other computers. I attributed this to a conflicting addon or something. I recently had to reinstall my OS and, of course, Songbird... and I was very excited because I hoped it would all work perfectly again, like it did when I first installed it. But no dice. Now my entire library, newly imported on this fresh install is completely lowercase according to the "File Location" column. So I will not be able to listen to a single song over the Orb streaming software.

Perhaps the problem is in the exporting addon, but I doubt it, since it was working at first, and I don't recall an update to it, and the non-playing tracks have always matched the all-lowercase tracks as reported in the "File Location" column. Also it should be noted that, first of all, all the music plays perfectly fine within Songbird, regardless of the case of the reported file location. And secondly, the .m3u files are not completely unusable... they still work perfectly fine with the likes of CDBurnerXP. So this may be a standards issue with the Orb developers, not observing common practices in their coding, or something. But the fact remains that it was working, then something changed in Songbird (the lowercase thing) and it stopped working. I don't recall if there was a Songbird update around when this happened... I actually didn't notice it for quite a while, since most of my library was still reporting the file location in the correct case and working just fine. Though, when I did notice it, I also noticed that it was actually changing some paths to all lowercase that had been the correct case, and that there were a LOT of duplicates and even triplicates showing up (this took quite a bit of cleanup and was only happening within the Songbird library, not the actual directory where my library is stored).

I'm posting this here, because I didn't really know where to start. And between the Songbird support site, and the Orb support forums, this seemed like a much more knowledgeable and active community with more dedicated developers. The thing that bothers me is that nobody else has reported issues with this. But also, I haven't seen a single other person that uses Songbird and Orb the way I do, with Songbird essentially feeding Orb the playlist files to stream from.

I'm very anxious to stop using Winamp... so far, Songbird is above and beyond Winamp, in my opinion, except in one place... music/file organization.

I cannot believe that this has not yet been implemented. I see that it is in the plans, but I can find no estimates as to when it will be added. Aside from the basic features of any media player software, this seems to me like it would be THE number one priority. Every other "decent" media player that I know of has this feature, whether it's native or an extension/add-on. But the add-on for Songbird has been long outdated.

Personally, i find the lack of this feature, while the development team focuses on more cosmetic features, simply unacceptable. I have music that I want to add to my library, but Winamp's method is via an extension and the whole process is rather messy. It sounds like they have the right idea for how to do it with Songbird, but we need this feature NOW. It really needs to be made top priority, and it looks like there are a LOT of people that agree with that.

Once this feature is added, I will make a full switch to Songbird... but this is a huge disappointment to me, so far.

And hopefully there will not be a total of 3 options for naming schemes or organizational systems, like I found suggested in some of the development notes. I would suggest, as many others already have, looking at iTunes' organization system, and having it nicely customizable... But when I was using iTunes on my Mac (I've since moved my music library to a Win XP system), even iTunes was far from perfect and made the library virtually unusable by any other software. Hopefully, whatever they do for Songbird will actually work so that the library can easily be accessed and understood by other media software.

I've already got my music all organized, I just need to be able to keep it organized that way and have newly added music organized into the same scheme.

I use "...Music Library\Artist\Album\Artist - Song Title.mp3" for my main organization/naming scheme. If the track is part of a compilation of multiple artitsts, I use "...Music Library\Compilations\Album\Artist - Song Title.mp3". So I hope there will be a way for me to organize compilations separately, even if it's perhaps a filter criteria that I can set to look for "part of a compilation" in the metadata comment field. That's the thing that I do like about Winamp's organization extension that I use, it uses search/filter criteria to determine how to organize specific tracks... so a simple implementation of something like that would be a nice addition, or at least a check box to keep compilations grouped/organized together, like in iTunes.
