How to change student account profile pics?My students are using a premium wiki from summer camp. Is there any way to change the profile pictures on a student account? Since I'm admin, I was able to change my own, but not theirs.

So far, I'm asking students to post reflections and what they learned in class, on the internet, or on the wiki. I'm stoked that they are so excited about using the wiki, but I'm getting a lot of comments left by students like, "yo what's up," "hi girlfriend what are you doing," etc. I'm glad they are using it, and I want to encourage it as much as possible, but I'm wondering if it is getting too conversation-y. Any other teachers have similar thoughts???

A footnote should be included whenever you quote or paraphrase a source and if you cite statistics or other pieces of information that come from a particular source, cite that source. I also have my students cite the source of their images. One reason I do this is that they think Google images is the source and need to be taught to go to the page where Google found the image

I definitely agree with the above about citing sources:
I'm thinking some details, like bibliography/source information would be good to add in a footnote, as sometimes images or content come from other places - but not identified. This would be good role modelling for our students, as well as a good resource for the viewers/teachers who share the wiki.
I also think there's an option for that "alternate" or "extra" info you sometimes need to give, but aren't sure where to put:
Sometimes information gets added later - or, you have a tangential (but important) point to add, or an obvious question you know will arise on a task description ... then, having an asterisk with a footnote of the extra information would be helpful.

Images, text, video, any intellectual property which is quoted from a source that is not one's own. This skill is particularly important to teach for the web as it is easy to forget that many of these formats which are shared for free are not passing their ownership to the viewer. Footnoting...citation....is part of being a good citizen, even in a digital world.

When I taught first and second grade I would have them write down the title/author of the book they were using for a report. Now that I'm teaching in the computer lab this is something I'll have to address with our staff this year. I'm not sure what the 4th/5th grade teachers are requiring when their students do research. I have a feeling it's not much but hopefully I'm wrong.

I agree. All work that is not the kids original work should be cited. – castewart, on August 23, 2008 02:32
