The Very BEST Day I've Had With Linkedin In A Long, Long Time!!! - Linking Eyes To Find Missing Children
If, as an end user, I grant myself permission to criticize Linkedin for issues I truly have a problem with then, I should also grant myself permission to say a "Hallelujah!" or two for those things which make me feel good about Linkedin.

I feel good about Linkedin today...

Case in point: Even as a die-hard group creator, there is one group which means more to me than almost any other: Linking Eyes To Find Missing Children. I hope I don't need to tell you why this particular groups is so important but, just imagine the stress that a child is under when they don't have their familiar roots, processes, routines, people to turn to. I know first hand how challenging it is - even as an middle aged adult - to have your life, your routines uprooted. Familiar things ripped away from you... - Compounding that with prospective psychological and physical harm to the child and you can see the urgency of treating this as a matter worthy of the best attention of the best people.

No one can force us to look for these missing children but, if you and I love networking as much as we claim to, then it should disturb us into action when we realize how "un-networked" these missing children are. The more powerful our own networks the more we should be able to empathize with the powerlessness of the networks of these missing children.

Thus, as a professional networker I'm encouraged by the fact that, today, August 25, 2008, Linkedin Corporation approved my group "Linking Eyes To Find Missing Children". That, in and of itself, is good enough to make me feel quite good about Linkedin... *THAT satisfies *me*!

I'll explain more about why it was so meaningful to get this particular group up and running even in the midst of all the things going on with Linkedin Groups but, for now, I'd just like to make you aware of Linking Eyes To FInd Missing Children: http://www.linkedin.com/e/vgh/717967/

Creating A New Linkedin Account 8.16.2008
In spite of much misgivings and in spite of still having no clear idea what really happened to the Linkedin relationship I *thought* I was working on, today, August 16, 2008, I opened another account on Linkedin.

Since my series of nano-posts on MyVirtualPowerForum.com were supposed to be *VERY* short, I'll keep this as Twitter-like as can be: I merely want the simplest possible professional relationship one can have with Linkedin. -

Thus, I intend to focus just on seeking and making professional introductions. In other words, using the Linkedin platform to help with my business, social, and career missions and with helping those who network with me to do the same. That's it. That's all. I know of no way to express it with any greater clarity of purpose than that. If you're ready for the future, so am . So, onward. Upward. Keep moving forward. And please try to keep getting STRONGER!

Thanks for your kind words, Ehab. Perhaps a little passage of time will help this become clearer. In the meantime, if I can help you with your networking efforts, please let me know. .. Vincent Wright – Vincent Wright, on August 15, 2008 03:03

Vincent Wright reported a problem in LinkedIn on August 13, 2008 18:02:

    Vincent Wright
Look What They Did To My WORK!!! This Is GROSS!!
    So,
Linkedin Corporation gets mad at me - and others - for using the trademark/brand "Linkedin" in our URLs, those of us who thought highly of Linkedin try to the best of our ability to stave off a useless fight, thus, we give up our domain names and look, just LOOK at what's happened to one of the domain names I conceived, paid for, marketed, championed, and moderated - RESPONSIBLY - CONSCIENTIOUSLY - for 3 years: Just LOOK at: LinkedinVentureCapital.com !!!!!

QUESTION: My usage of LinkedinVentureCapital.com for my discussion group of nearly 1,000 people talking about Linkedin and Venture Capital was a problem for Linkedin but, http://www.commercialmortgagesandloan... is not??

I *VOLUNTARILY* gave up the domain out of respect for Linkedin's rights to its trademark and brand and, now, LinkedinVentureCapital.com has fallen into the hands of someone who could care less about Linkedin, trademarks, corporate brands, respect, or much of anything else civilized people care about.

Thousands of hours of work - all of that work - all of that link building and networking and moderating now falls into the hands of some charlatan - I guess the kind of person that Linkedin must have thought that I was...

    This is sickening!!

I've rarely asked you to DIGG or stumble or Twitter any of the many things I've posted but, so that members of your Linkedin network can know about this type of bad business practice, I'd like to ask you to make sure that they can see this for themselves - with their own eyes.

In closing: Does it make ANY sense - AT ALL for Linkedin to pull domains out of the hands of its evangelists and let them fall into the hands of creepy sites like like this: http://www.commercialmortgagesandloan... ??

Pardon the outburst but the above is not intended to have a "professional" tone - because, though I wasn't expecting anything from Linkedin, as a workaholic I don't like losing my work product.

EXACTIMUNDO, blonde & loving it! EXACTIMUNDO, indeed!

Especially this statement of yours: "Unfortunately all of the numerous hard-workers who have done no wrong are paying the price for a few abusers. It could be likened to a community that has a few crooks and instead of the police going after the few crooks and prosecuting them; the whole community is jailed. This is what LinkedIn is doing to the LinkedIn user networking community."

Scott, while Adam Nash sufficiently answered the original question about the 50 Groups limit, you bring up a different matter of great importance: what to do with evangelists once the evangelizing is over - once evangelizing is no longer needed

While many of us devoted thousands of hours of our own time encouraging people within our reach to take Linkedin seriously, Linkedin's dismissive attitude towards some of its most ardent evangelists makes its recent successes meaningless to those of us who had longed to see Linkedin reach the numbers it's now reaching....

Yet, while I did remove my Linkedin membership - from a pure business development perspective - I *still* recommend that business professionals use Linkedin - I just don't go out of my way to do so any longer. Linkedin is a good place for business professionals. But, Linkedin is not a good place for Linkedin evangelists (like me)

I fully support your post, Scott... – Vincent Wright, on August 08, 2008 17:49

I'm not sure what Spock's issue is with providing its users with a simple delete button but, I agree with you ONE HUNDRED PERCENT. It's beyond annoying to come upon that rare, rare, rarest of sites which will not permit its members from deleting an email address from their own accounts. Further to that, let's say that I wanted to delete me Spock account and start over with a fresh one - one where I can completely control all email addresses associated with my name: there is no way that I can see where I can delete my account. I may be wrong but, something is fishy here... And I don't like that type of feeling... I would have happily referred my network to Spock but, now, that's IMPOSSIBLE... – Vincent Wright, on August 08, 2008 15:15

Though like "LinkedOut" I'm no longer a Linkedin member, I still work with a lot of people who still are - people who still have high hopes of using Linkedin to do business better. Based upon their conversations with me, many of my former Linkedin connections would agree with the points "Linkedout" is asking here on GetSatisfaction.com. Many of these members still like Linkedin as a service but do not like the way Linkedin is making them *FEEL*.

No mater how financially successful Linkedin is - if too many people start to think that it feels bad to use Linkedin's services, eventually the end users bad feelings could start to affect Linkedin's bottom line. It may not appear that that's at all possible at this time but, it wouldn't surprise me if/when it happens.

To me, some of Linkedin's biggest recent problems has to do with perception.

Linkedin has a certain perception of its user population(s). Those perceptions lead to decisions which affect *multiple* populations - not just the intended ones. That, in turn, leads to users changing their perception of the value they get from Linkedin. It's not about software, it's about perception.

As odd as it may seem: people turn to services like Linkedin because they want to feel better than they did PRIOR to using the service. If Linkedin is not going to help them to feel better about getting and conducting business via the Linkedin platform then what's the point of using Linkedin services? No matter how carefully, how scientifically a system is architected, the bottom line is that people still need to feel good about using it. A growing number of people I know aren't feeling that way about Linkedin's changes right now....Think about it.

To the specific issue at hand, "LinkedOut" asks a very good question when he asks: "Adam - if, as you claim, "there are a very small number of people outside of this limit" - then why not simply allow those "small number of people" to stay in all of the groups that THEY CHOSE TO BE IN until such time as THEY choose to delete some?"

Seems like a fair question to me...

Very good, detailed response. I appreciate it. However, let me be more specific about my issue; Let's say that I was a marketing consultant for a small company and that small company provided me an email address for marketing campaigns. I add that email address to my Spock account. My professional relationship with that client company ends. I can not remove from my account the email address I once used for my former client. ****IF*** the client still has that email address and ***IF*** the client knows that I added that email address to my Spock account THEN that former client has the same MEANS OF ACCESS to my Spock account as I do. Is the above scenario correct? If so, then my data isn't safe. My Spock account is no longer safe for me to use, correct?

    Bill,
Few people could be more annoyed with Linkedin's changes over the last year than I am however, irrespective of how annoying and off-putting some of those changes may prove to me personally, I'd like to encourage you to reconsider depriving those 100 job seekers of your considerable insights into how Linkedin can help them expedite their job search. Bottom line: If it were me, I'd still show them the benefit they can get from using Linkedin - carefully, that is... – Vincent Wright, on August 02, 2008 20:39

Not necessarily to my *immediate* favor, Eric but, long term, I believe it does/will resolve in my favor. E.g., while it may appear in the short term that a lot of work - or at least a large percentage of work - has been lost, I'm looking favorably on exploring other social media options I'd been overlooking over the past 3+ years...

(If the above is too convoluted to follow, let me get a cup of coffee and I'll try a shorter/better explanation! :-))
