Theoritically the new models are less prone to breaking. They redesigned the motherboard, cooling, and even the main chip itself to take care of the heat issue. As a nice side effect, it's also quieter and it doesn't sound like a vacuum cleaner like the older generation.
Unfortunately getting one right now is like russian roulette. You need to be able to see the lot number (i forgot the right value) and the manufacturing date; both of which MS now tries to cover up with a new sticker. This means if you really want one you probably shouldn't order online (which kinda sucks since that means you'll have to pay sales tax).
o yeah - there are other problems depending on your setup too. Optical audio has a good chance of not working (sigh - lots of static), though HDMI is awesome.
With MS no matter how cool their products seem, quality is always an issue...

I must say that the XBOX 360 ELITE is trash. I've only had it for about a month an a half and I already have the "RED RING of DEATH". I've never in all my life had a product mess up in a month. TRASH is the only legal word I can share with you guys. I've had a SNES thats still works after 10 YEARS. I own both XBOX 360 ELITE and a Wii. Out of personal experience the ELITE is a true "brick".
P.S. It will take half a month to get it back. Vitalme kicks but in HALO 3.
