A comment on the idea "CD Rip / Burn Support" in Songbird:

I'm sure they did; anyone who comes up with something useful (or even not) wants to patent it and get all the rights that come with that. But should the U.S. or WTO (or other organization) perhaps pass an amendment to patent law that invalidates patents on formats used by a large percentage (say, 95%) of the population?

A comment on the idea "CD Rip / Burn Support" in Songbird:

WAV support would be usable, but ridiculously huge compared to MP3. I'm also thinking about getting an iPod Touch, but would still like MP3s rather than AAC. I'll probably have to stick with iTunes, Windows Media Player, and other third-party apps because of the patents.

Such ubiquitous formats as MP3 should not be allowed to have patents on them, IMO. – Voyagerfan5761, on October 25, 2009 21:34

@Andrew Luecke: Actually, I can. The device I use as a player—a Roland Edirol R-09HR—only supports WAV and MP3, and only well-formed MP3s at that (tiny hiccups in the file structure give it hives). – Voyagerfan5761, on October 20, 2009 01:41

It is interesting how Google has held on to Orkut despite its narrow national focus. however, they do also run a few services that are only available in e.g. Russia or China. When I updated to 1.2, the Now Playing list became a lot more functional. I think it was an update to the extension, though. Maybe the devs can just ask the developer of that add-on for permission to work it into the core code? :)

Moved/renamed/deleted files, location field, and lost Library info

Songbird is definitely my favorite media application. But let's face it: Keeping files organized when it's trying to keep track of them in the Library is a pain.

I have a sort of rule within my music folder that, if I get more than a few tracks by an artist, I give that artist a subfolder. Unfortunately, that means Songbird loses the file and I have to delete and re-import that track. It wouldn't be such a big deal if I didn't lose all my ratings, play counts, and so on.

Also, sometimes I rename files. Songbird loses those too. Same problems.

So Songbird needs to be able to 1) detect that a file is missing and 2) prompt the user to find it or delete the Library entry.

I would also find it useful to be able to search on the file location field and edit that field preemptively when I move or rename something.

It wouldn't be a big deal to make a mistake if the bank didn't take 20% off the top of every deposit. That makes accidental withdrawals a big deal.
