I've tried exporting the sessions on 2 of my other Macs.
One was a Mac Pro 2 x 2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (4GB RAM - OS X 10.4.11) where Silverback crashed immediately when I started the export.
The other one was a PowerPC 2 x 2 Ghz G5 (2GB RAM - OS X 10.5.4) where Silverback just stopped responding, it didn't crash, I just got the turning beachball.
The machine I use for the tests is a MacBook Pro 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo (2GB RAM - OS X 10.5.4).

I tried to export a 3hrs session today, but the app froze right in the middle of the export. I want to send you the file, but the folder size of the session is 8.74 Gb... So I can't really send it to you.
Any idea on how I can solve this? Because I've got 3 other sessions that also fail to export. All longer then 1hr.
Thanks in advance,
Ward

It is not a good idea to show the user a list of tasks to complete, because that way the user might feel stress if he/she can't complete the tasks in time. They will also read through all the tasks before starting, which will lead them in a certain way and compromises the test results.
Showing the time it took them to complete a task isn't good either. Because it looks like you are testing the user instead of your application, which is completely the opposite of usability testing.
It is better to show them task by task (or scenario by scenario) and have a facilitator in the room to help in case of issues.

Failed exports, lots of disk space goneI tried to export one of my sessions I did last week, but half way through the export it froze twice. When I check my disk space afterwards more then 15 Gbs have disappeared. Is there a way I can fix this? Any temporary files I can delete?
Thanks,
Ward

Smaller movie file size, almost same qualityI exported a couple of sessions on my MBP, but most of the files were around 2.5 Gigabites each. When I transformed them to MP4 with h.264 encoding in VisualHub, the files were smaller then 800Mb, and it only took around 15 minutes to transform. With almost no quality loss.
What kind of codecs are you using for the lower qualities?

Exporting sessions on other MacToday I wanted to export the videos on my other Mac (2 x Quad Core Mac Pro), because I needed my MacBook Pro. So I copied the files from the projects folder on my MBP to the projects folder on my Mac Pro.
All the projects and sessions showed up fine in the Silverback App, but when I tried to export them the app crashed immediately. Is there a way I can still export the videos on the Mac Pro? Or do I have to export them on my MBP?
Thanks,
Ward

Thanks for the reply, I'm really looking forward to this feature.
I've been using your app with much pleasure for the last couple of days.
It arrived just in time, because I had and still have to do several tests. I've done a few of about 3 hours, but I still have to export those sessions... which will take some time.

Tasks / Scenarios embedded in the Silverback AppFirst, thanks for the great app!
Now I've got an idea, I don't know if it would be good or not.
I've put it in sequence to try and explain it:
- The facilitator starts a new project in Silverback, at that time he also adds tasks and or scenarios for the project.
- Right before the test, he creates a new session, he adds a title and is able to sort the tasks and scenarios if necessary. (To create different setups.)
- Right before the user arrives he starts the session. The screen turns black and shows the first task/scenario to the user. With the text "Press spacebar to start" underneath it.
- The user presses the spacebar and completes the task. When the user thinks he's done, the facilitator presses the play/pause button on the remote control and then the forward button. The app then saves the first task and all the necessary information. While the screen turns black again.
- The facilitator can then ask a few posttask questions, if needed.
- To start the next task, the facilitator presses the forward button again. The app then shows the next task/scenario. And the user can start the task.
...
- When the session is over, the app shows all the different tasks with separate recorded files and info. The facilitator can then add extra notes.
Splitting up the tasks into separate video files allows shorter export time. Because now, when you do a session of about an hour, with several tasks, the video gets really large.
Showing the tasks/scenarios on the screen, also leaves out the need for extra text cards. And when you later look back at the project you have the task and the video linked with each other.
What do you think?
