I've been trying out Ubiquity when I can and so far it's... "nice"... but not really what I was trying to get across.

Maybe I'm not using it right but the idea of having to type things out like "artistName" (even the capital N) to get it to search and then "rating 5" is a lot more complicated then what I was intending.

It does cover the difficulty of searching trackname, artistname, etc, specifically. But it's a little inelegant with not a lot of flow to it. At least not that I've been able to discern. Perhaps I just don't get it yet.

One nice this is that Ubiquity reminded me that I can change one of the filter panes to rating! I can't believe I forgot that!
    ________

I was thinking about the challenge of working the ability to search trackname and others without radically changing the search bar and the only think I can figure is to be able to right click on a search word, "love", and choose from a list what it should be limited to.

It's not as clean as just being able to rapidly type in what you want, but I think it'll work.

    Songbird Search Bar Enhancement
I do a lot of random searches within my music. Right now I can only do a general search and any possible hits are included in the results. Which, ya know, is cool and all. But I'd like the ability to make more refine searches without resorting to a smartlist. Smartlists are great for what they do, but they're not really "spontaneous" with the clicking and the naming and the selecting of features, etc... All that for a playlist that I don't even want to keep.

    Plus I'm really, really, lazy.

So, in what ways can we enhance the search bar without it getting in the way of how it currently works?

This is what I've been able to come up with so far:

Rating: The "*" symbol isn't used in most track/album/artist names so why not have it represent the Star Rating Songbird currently uses? The default would be all ratings, then with each * typed it restricts the results to that rating or higher. Type "happy *****" and get the results for "happy" filtered down to 5 star ratings only.

Time: Again, the ":" is little used, but it is for denoting time. HH:MM:SS So following the pattern set above, if I type 2:00 it would restrict to songs longer then 2 min's. Which is great, but sometimes you want it the other way. So how about putting a "-" at the beginning to invert the search? Type "Iron Butterfly -5:00" would definitely filter out In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. There are also situations where you'd like a range of times. So let's reuse the "-" so we could type in 2:00-5:00 as a range. Type "jazz 2:00-5:00" to get jazz songs on the short side of things without being too short.

Year: This is a slightly more difficult thing to do, in a way. Years are 4 digit numbers, 1976, which is rare for a name but not unheard of. (I'm looking at you Smashing Pumpkins.) But once again, a range could be useful. "1959-1975" could give you all the songs published during the Vietnam War. But there's also a shortcut we could use for year. Music styles can alter dramatically based on era, The 60's, The 70's, etc. So let "60's" and "70's" and all the others act as shortcuts for the decades. Type "jazz 50's" to get all the results for jazz within 1950 to 1959. (Or should that be 1951 to 1960?)

So, a quick example of everything together. "Elton John *** 70's -6:00" That would give me everything by Elton John released in the 70's that I've rated 3 stars or higher and less then 6 min's. And on the fly I could replace Elton John with Rolling Stones without having to mess with the settings of a smartlist.

    Yay!

As for search terms that are currently used, I'd also like to be able to "invert" them with a "-" in front. Such as "home -country" would at the very least filter out the genre "Country" like a Google search.

Keep up the good work (and faster release cycles!),

    Library intergrated with Wordpress?
Interesting plugin appeared today for WordPress: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/t...

It takes your library from iTunes and displays it as a AJAXy page on your blog. The author has an example here: http://yannickcorner.nayanna.biz/my-m...

This is a nifty little trick but I get the feeling that more could be done with it. Tho' I'm not totally sure what yet.

What if you could back up your library to your blog in real time? Playcounts, ratings, etc always up to date and maybe shared across machines (home and work for example?).

How about linking Songbird to the "web library's" of friends to compare ratings or swap songs/playlists? rstevens of DieselSweeties ( http://www.dieselsweeties.com/blog/?p... ) sometimes hosts collective playings of albums with people getting together on twitter to talk about it - maybe Songbird could use a WordPress blog or Twitter to keep everyone in sync? I admit it's a limited use idea at the moment, but who knows what people could do with it.

A lot of Songbird's "social" integration has been along the big sites, like Last.fm, it might be interesting to see what can be done on a more personal scale.

I'm not really sure that these are good ideas, but if anyone else has something to add I'd be interested in hearing it.

It's good from a usability point of view, something to show users just what is going on. Reduce those "What did *that* do?" moments.

But it has to happen quickly. If someone opens a pane by accident, the time from opening and then closing it again should not result in the user having to wait for the actions/animations to complete before being able to do what they intended.

    Wayne
A *long* time ago I read that iTunes (I think it was like version 4 or 5 at the time) actually *did* keep ratings as between 0 and 100 and just showed stars in the UI. If you edited the iTunes db itself you could give half ratings.

If Songbird imports iTunes metadata faithfully, then it might still be there and be supported already. An extension would just be needed to interact with it.

But unless someone knows where to look this is just speculation.

I like the idea of Songbird "suggesting" song ratings based on play history but I think it should be implemented only for songs which haven't been specifically rated by the user.

There are songs you love, but you've listened to them so much that you tend to skip them a lot. If I specify a song as 5 stars, I don't want Songbird to lower that if I skip it a few times.

It might be an idea of having a second db entry which is specifically for the Songbird suggested rating.

This might mesh well with another idea I've commented on where the plan was to populate ratings based on chart position: http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/t...

I totally geek out on automation so I'm giddy with the idea that all the unrated tracks in my library getting an auto-suggested rating from some third party (Last.fm, All Music Guide, Weekly Top 40, Maybe a Songbird website/db where users can submit their track ratings to the collective?) which then could be tweaked by how I actually listen to the songs.

    Hey Laura,

I'm honestly not qualified to judge if it would be better as a plugin or a core component. But... if I could make a *radical* departure... I'd kinda like to see a *server* version of Songbird. (Queue dramatic music and thunderclap)

    Stay with me here...

My current setup in my house consists of more then a few computers/media players, sometimes run by different people. For each one of those I'll have to get either Songbird or the media software to load up the music I have on my server, then have to figure out a way to get all the work I've put into song ratings and playlists, tags, etc to these seperate machines. For Songbird, that might not be so hard as someone who knows what they're doing will at some point come up with a fix for that. However, what about other stuff like Boxee, for instance? Or those new TV's demoed at CES that run Yahoo widgets? Or even a videogame that allows you to play your own background music?

Wouldn't it be great if anything I could use to play music had *full* access to all the work I've already done?

To my knowledge, UPNP can share the actual files, but it's just a lump of data. But, say I got my new spiffy widget-running-TV and, loading up the Songbird applet, I type in "nest://wayne@myhomesongbirdserver/" and *BOOM* I got it all. I queue up my smart playlist of 60's Jazz and listen to a few tunes. This updates the playcounts and dates on each song on the server, which in turn updates my playlist of songs I haven't listen to in a while which then gets reflected in my iPod the next time I sync it.

    Isn't that cool?

Or.... I tag songs with "Music to Frag By" (Yeah, I know tags aren't in just yet.) and in my updated copy of QuakeWorld I can type in "nest://wayne@myhomesongbirdserver/" and while I'm playing - QuakeWorld might be actually playing the music, but Songbird is doing the music management on it's end.

Essentually, any media interface that plays music could benefit from Songbird by putting metadata and playlists that already exist to work for them.

It doesn't *have* to be a specific server version of Songbird but a gui-less version for a server (Windows Home Server plugin??) might be able to run as a service for those families which only have one computer.

Always remember, I'm exceptionally lazy. Anything I do once, I don't want to do a second time. And even the things I do once, I don't really want to do them.

Did this make things any clearer? Ottawa is in the midst of a bus drivers strike and I'm losing sleep from having to get up so early to carpool downtown so it's quite possible that I'm a little incoherent. :)

Let other programs use Songbird for their own Librarys.
I've been playing with Boxee ( http://www.boxee.tv ) the past few days and I'm rather impressed with the software. It's still early but it has a lot of promise. Much like the first time I tried Songbird.

So far I've been able to import all of my music and it's nice being able to browse on the big TV.

But... All the work I've put into my library in Songbird is unavailable to Boxee. Song ratings, Playlists, SmartPlaylists, etc...

Some things are not replicated in Boxee such as playlists and the rating system boils down to Yea or Nay. I imagine that's partly due to the interface, imagine manipulating Songbird with nothing but a remote control - not a lot of fun to build a playlist that way.

Plus playcounts and "last played" metadata become, effectively, incorrect in Songbird. If I spent the day listening to a album through Boxee any Songbird Smart Playlists that avoid recently played songs are going to backfire - at least from my perspective.

What I'm basically suggesting is a interface that other programs can interact with and update the Songbird library. Let Songbird do the heavy lifting for other programs when it comes to music management.

For anything that might interact with your music library it should be able to go though Songbird just to cut down on trouble and duplication of effort.

Should I have to import all my music *again* for Boxee? Should my already created playlists be unavailable? Should I have to re-rate my albums?

Hell, it's 2009. If I can't have my flying car can I at least have my software working together for me?

    Stop after current playing track?
I was playing around with global hot-keys and noticed something missing that I'd like to see there.

How about adding a way to have Songbird to stop playing after the current track? Instead of just stopping in the middle of a song, let it finish first.

Winamp use to have this feature (the last time I used it...) you could right click on the Play/Pause button and select "Stop after current track" or something like that.

I can't think of a better way to implement it into Songbird other then to do the same thing. But I'm open to suggestions. And of course, I'd like it to be selectable as a global hotkey. (actually, there's a lot I'd like to see added to that)

Also, while we're on song stopping, how about an option to have the music fade in/out when paused and unpaused. It's a little less jarring when you have the speakers up on bust. ;)

    Wayne
Well then, the only logical choice is to have every major release with a different colour bird.

"You're still running Blue Jay? Man, upgrade to Cardinal."
"I thought that was Ruby-throated Warbler."
    "That was the beta."

When you think about it, it's the only thing that makes any sense!

An orange bird? After all the momentum you've built up with with the black one? You sold T-shirts with it.

Plus you're going to use different birds for the app and website? Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot.

Even the silhouette from the logo would be better: http://getsongbird.com/images/songbir...

Wayne replied on November 18, 2008 02:54 to the idea "Songbird must have an original UI" in Songbird:

    Wayne
It's so easy to say the UI needs to be "new and exciting" but it's a lot harder to put that into practice.

I think that the most important thing in the UI for a app that will (hopefully) have mass appeal is simplicity and clarity. You should "just know" what a button is for when you see it. The challenge is to provide the power of Songbird's core and plugins through that simplicity.

I do agree with the embedded web browser, I'd rather have that be just a plugin for Firefox which talks to Songbird, I don't need a separate browser just for certain sites. But that's a small point in my usage of Songbird.

Is there anything that you can suggest to define what you'd like to see in the UI?
