A comment on the question "Thumbnail pic won't change?" in HootSuite:
I cannot see why this isn't automated, at some point, by hootsuite. Even a weekly cron job would be better. I mean, why would a user ever NOT want their avatar sync'd? – wazungu, on April 03, 2009 00:46

Can you clarify? Do you mean, "no, I don't use @replies in Ping.fm", or, "no, Hootsuite shouldn't worry about how @replies are implemented?" – wazungu, on February 27, 2009 21:40
wazungu replied on February 27, 2009 20:08 to the question "Why in the world did they say that?" in Twitter:
Look at the advanced settings of Twitter Search. Dial in your search query, then use a feed reader (Google Reader, NetNewsWire or Newsgator) to read the resulting feed. That's the simplest route.
Once it's in a feed, you can do other things with it, like combine it with Yahoo! Pipes and roll in other searches (like a google search) into one stream.

That's probably a personal preference with how it's handled - when I use Ping.fm and reference people on twitter ("I just had lunch with @kristicw"), those get sent on to FB and the like. I haven't seen any complaints from people for using Twitter syntax in other networks.
People might have to explain more ("I had lunch with Kristi (@kristcw) today") for it to make sense, but this is the tradeoff involved for sending one message to multiple networks with different syntaxes.
Another point: if one is scheduling @replies, then by definition that person is targeting a Twitter conversation, not a conversation on another network. The point is somewhat moot IMHO.
It would be fabulous for those kinds of messages that need scheduling for all the networks. I can think of a bajillion uses for it. =)

This will be interesting to watch. Ping.fm and Hellotxt.com are really figuring out how to post the same content to most social media platforms. The service focused on tracking, managing and scheduling those tools/APIs will dominate.
Assuming those services don't implement them on their own first...
You guys do it right, they'll want to buy you out! Twitter bought Summize, et. al.
