White_Wolf replied on May 10, 2009 09:20 to the question "Confused on "Content Site" Defintion" in MilkandCookies Network:
Howdy BBS and any other readers,
First of all, just to start off with something off topic, as I'm wont to do, I notice BBS has awarded me a special status: Jaxon, W_W, and Friends she opened her question with. This could mean BBS thinks I'm a very important creature at M&C, someone who perhaps rules the site with an iron fist along with Jaxon, who's da Boss. Actually, I'm only a mod like you, BBS. I enjoy no other privileges (except being allowed to break all rules when I feel like doing that). Of course, I'm a talking wolf, which is actually reason enough to mention me by name separate from the others ... and to be honest I do always demand of people that they pay me homage OR ELSE! (options range from a permafrost sightseeing tour that ends rather abruptly, to stuff such as playing with leopard seals brought over from Antarctica, or milder entertainment involving romantic sled cruises with me holding the reins).
Okay, that said, we can now move to the business at hand:
I also asked myself a few times what defines a content site, and in the end I just continued to rely on my gut feeling when voting. I do want to mention that when I run into a link that goes right to a site that looks to be some sort of a portal to all sorts of videos (and what not) I flag it. If the site is dedicated to one subject (narrowly defined, so no site that has a trillion videos about animals, for example), I vote on it. I think it's hard for me to explain here where I draw the line. Certainly I can't remember having flagged your links, so I can't comment there. It's rare that I flag something. Dupes are reason #1 for me.
I actually like the variety, so I tend to vote leniently, knowing that that encourages people to keep submitting, and submitting better stuff over time maybe. This is also why I have recommended Jaxon to pay extra attention to new people. Give 'em a headline if they have submitted something that deserves some attention. And make sure the headlines are varied in subject: a game now and then, some light stuff (but not stupid), some politics, some of this, some of that. I think that is done well now, and the amount of headlines has been lowered drastically, but perhaps too drastically. I would think about ten new ones daily would be fine. Recycle some classics now and then, which is also done regularly, so no complaints here.
Take care,
W_W

Hi Royce,
Pretty cool video. I suggest you just submit the link yourself and see what happens to it. The idea behind M&C is that it is a community of people who all have something to add, whether time, votes, comments, ideas, links, you name it. I appreciate your idea, and knowing that M&C is a community of people who all can contribute something (and thus make M&C hopefully stronger and more diverse), I recommend you submit the link yourself. All voluntary, of course.
All the best,
W_W

Hi Boogeboogieston,
My first reaction when I saw the tag was 'Eh? That is a little rude.' I read the comments and noticed people's concerns, though some didn't mind. Well, I'm not the person who selects tags or pictures that go along with them, and am in no position to do so, either. I've been granted moderator status, though. This moderator thing gives me some privileges and responsibilities at the website. Therefore, I feel the need to express my opinion on the matter.
Now, I've been sort of waiting for Jaxon's reply on this matter. It's his decision. Anyway, the picture is some reference, so is meant to be humorous. Still, the reference may be a little too obscure. My advice to Jaxon would be to change the picture. Maybe it goes a little bit too far for the purpose. I say maybe, because I haven't really thought about it thoroughly yet. Again, my gut reaction suggests that changing the picture would be more appropriate.
I'm sure your concerns will not be taken lightly. I myself enjoy your contributions to M&Cs. I hope the final decision will be good for all.
Best of wishes,
W_W

And thank you for returning, Todd.
Just a quick note here -- Not to brag or anything like that, but I've submitted over 500 links to M&Cs. Only one of them (that I know of) is in favor of religion. The title of this video is 'Tim Keller: The Reason for God.' I submitted it because yes I'm interested to know what moves people to embrace religion (God) and if anyone is able to coherently and intelligently present his or her views on that matter, I'm not averse to sharing the video. But, if truth be told, what makes people believe in God is often personal and not up for grabs on YouTube (or other video sites). Also, these views seldom make me go ahead and submit them to M&Cs; I've got high standards. I mean, a video should impress me if I'm willing to submit it (though I sometimes submit 'lighter' material). Frankly, I rarely see outstanding (in an intelligent way) videos promoting religion. Naturally, you should also take into account my opinions on religion.
As for pro-Republican stuff, I've done my best trying to make people more aware of Ron Paul, whose views (though not all) and character I highly respect.
Well, I could go on and on, but let me end by saying best wishes,

Hi there,
At the risk of invoking your wrath, here's my answer:
M&Cs is a community that consists of numerous individuals, some of whom submit links and/or post comments. Naturally, by so doing, those people share what they think is interesting. This always involves their opinions in some way or other. Some favor Christianity or (another subject entirely: politics) the Republican Party, defending their opinions voraciously. Many (most) others do not share their thoughts. (It's true that there are very few, if any, videos in favor of Christianity or the Republican Party on M&Cs.) Again, personal opinions. M&Cs hasn't banned any of these thoughts or deliveries, which is I think a very good thing. Feel free to submit a video that praises Jesus or a video that mocks him (or is that Him? Son of God and all that; some say God Himself).
There must be room to allow for all ideas, and a lively but civil debate, though some subjects have been banned because M&Cs reserves the right to do so. I don't think you'll witness M&Cs banning The Daily Show or Pat Condell, though. Animal cruelty is one of the things that are banned on M&Cs. All decent humans would agree that harming animals just for fun is terrible and must not be tolerated.
By the way, many of those who bash religion or the Republican Party aren't necessarily opposed to religion or the Republican Party per se. It's just that religion should stay out of politics and public places, among others schools (ever heard of the American Constitution? ... secular government); and the Republican Party has been fucking America for quite a long time now, but the same goes for many Democrats, in my opinion. Of course, there are still good Republicans, but their power is unfortunately small.
I could go on explaining, but this should do. I thank you for your question, which, unlike some others, was phrased in a civil manner.
Best of wishes,
W_W

Hi there,
Well, I used to have this technical problem, too -- but only when a link's description exceeded a certain amount of characters. So check the YouTube (?) description. If it's long (very long, that is), you might have spotted the reason why M&Cs won't accept the link.
There's a way to solve this. Submit another link, then (in the next screen) enter the correct link and there you are: problem solved.
Best of luck,

White_Wolf replied on June 21, 2008 09:34 to the problem ""View Series" Should Link to Rateable Series on Headline Page" in MilkandCookies Network:
Hi Booge,
Well, I'll try to help, but I don't navigate the site using View Series or something like that. So I can't comment on that much. I take it Jaxon will help you out. You're indeed correct that the View Series option doesn't offer sort of a General Vote (by lack of a better description). If truth be told, I can't even understand what benefits the View Series offers over the playlist advantages. Well, maybe it has a use if the playlist hasn't yet been created for that particular series. Why not use the playlist, view each separate item/segment in there (not using the View Series), and voting on the playlist at the end? Once you've seen the Moment of Zen, you know that's the last item of the playlist. Or hit the Backspace after watching each item/segment.
As for me, I stick to Latest Links. That way you miss nothing, not even the W_W Links that don't make it to the headlines ...
Take care,
W_W
White_Wolf replied on May 24, 2008 16:21 to the problem "Why isn't international accessibility a priority?" in MilkandCookies Network:
Dear M & Cookier,
I, too, sometimes run into these 'not in your country' links. They are annoying, and I, for one, never submit a link that can't be viewed worldwide. Still, the 'not in your country' links are being tolerated, for now, and sometimes they even make it to the headlines. I'm of the opinion that they should be banned, out of respect to the international community. I mean, M & Cs is an international community. Well, come to think of it, banning goes a bit far; not awarding headline status would be suitable, though. And preferably a statement in the link's description saying 'Not accessible in Canada/Europe/(on)the Moon', or wherever, depending on the nature of the link.
I'm just voicing my sympathy and offering some suggestions to the Big Boss of M & Cs.
Best,
W_W
