If you lose photos during an upgrade to a newer version of iphotos, it may be that the program is looking at the wrong iphotos picture database.

Just search for the iphoto library on your hardrive and double click to open iphoto using that particular library. Iphoto will ask you if you'd like to switch to the new library.

That worked for me just now.
