This is one of the functions provided by the Unselect Message extension for Thunderbird.
you can click into the empty space below the last message in the thread list to unselect the currently selected message and to clear the preview pane.
I'd also like to have this in Postbox. It looks like the extension has been abandoned by the author, so maybe you guys could, er, "borrow" the code and put it to good use in Postbox.

Hi Mom,
Remember that time a few years ago when you had a problem with your computer and I came over to take care of it, and I spent six hours trying to fix it and wound up reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows, and then after that you couldn't hear any sound from the computer any more? And then Dad got mad and told me never to "fix" the computer again, and then you told him to cool it, that I'd only been trying to help, and then the two of you got into a big fight and didn't talk to each other for the next three days? Man, those were the days, huh!
Well, next time, just go to getsatisfaction.com. I promise you things will work out much, much better.
P.S. Do you think I could borrow $150? I promise I'll pay it back real soon.

Regarding MozBackup: I should have checked earlier, but a Postbox-compatible MozBackup is clearly already in the works, as you can see here: http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/develo... – wintogreen, on August 11, 2009 11:55

OK, here's what I'm now seeing (after being a bit more patient), with pb.purge.offline_stores set to "true":
Select File > Compact Folders, wait about 5 seconds, then Postbox compacts everything locally.
But... Select folder to be compacted, right-click and choose Compact, wait for an eternity (or 15 seconds, whichever comes first), and nothing happens.

Sorry to be slow with the follow-up, but testing with Gmail imap and v1.0b14 I'm not seeing any effect from changing the pb.purge.offline_stores pref. My Spam folder is empty but, after compacting, it's still 3MB in the profile folder; my Inbox has one message but it's still 1.5MB locally. I've tried switching the pref between false and true, compacting multiple times, restarting Postbox, etc., but I don't see any change in the size of the local files.
Anything else I can try?

How come Postbox doesn't tell the user that Postbox in reality is simply Thunderbird with some modifications?
By the same logic, why doesn't Thunderbird tell us that in reality it's just the Mozilla Suite mail client with some modifications? I don't see the point, really.
a) give them credit, if anything, they are obviously the ones who deserve it
Scott, give yourself a big pat on the back. You deserve it.
A comment on the question "Why aren't there any credits given to Thunderbird?" in Postbox, Inc.:
MozBackup is an entirely separate ("standalone") utility, not an add-on or plug-in. Accordingly, it's up to the MozBackup author to make that utility work with Postbox, not the other way around. And I would guess that he will do that sooner or later, as he's done for a variety of Mozilla-based applications. – wintogreen, on August 11, 2009 04:34
Scott's reply to "Why aren't there any credits given to Thunderbird?" was just promoted to the most useful! wintogreen and 3 other people think it's one of the best replies.

wintogreen reported a problem in Postbox, Inc. on May 15, 2009 15:27:
can't switch signatures in edited Draft messageNormally it's very easy to switch between signatures in a message you're composing: just double-click on a sig in the Signatures pane, and the selected sig will replace the one currently at the bottom of the message being composed. But...
1. Start composing a message (with a sig at the end).
2. Save it as a draft and close the compose window.
3. Re-open that draft for editing.
4. Double-click on a different sig.
5. Instead of replacing the current sig, the double-clicked sig gets appended to the end of the message, so now there are two sigs.
This is with 1.0b12 and gmail imap. A similar old bug is here.

I'm not necessarily averse to running with the pref on, but... have you changed anything since the last beta that would make you think the corruption that was happening before will NOT happen now? Or is it more that you expect the same kind of corruption to happen with beta 10 and you want user feedback to help you figure out what's causing it?

Confirming (version 1.0b10 - 2009032714). This only seems to happen with the signature name when displayed in the Compose Sidebar. The sig name does display correctly in the Edit Signature dialog and in Tools > Account Settings > [account name] > Choose Signature.
Apart from that, I love the way you've implemented sigs. Very slick and easy to use.
wintogreen replied on March 21, 2009 02:01 to the problem "Storage in mail files make back-up difficult" in Postbox, Inc.:
I don't have a Mac so please pardon my ignorance on this, but can you set Time Machine to do block-level backups? That way, it would just incrementally back up the changed portions of files instead of the entire files. It's a common feature in other backup options I've explored (Jungle Disk, Mozy, etc.), so I'd be surprised if Time Machine doesn't provide it.
wintogreen reported a problem in Postbox, Inc. on March 21, 2009 00:58:
Issues with IMAP offline storage [version 1.0b9 (2009030821)]A few separate issues/suggestions. I'm using gmail IMAP on Vista.
1. At first I thought it was a bug that all my IMAP folders were being stored locally (in my profile folder) even though they weren't selected for offline use in Tools > Account Settings > Offline & Disk Space. Then I found out from this other thread that "Postbox will automatically download message bodies for you when you are idle as part of the indexing process." This makes sense once it's explained, but it's not clear from the UI that this is happening. Maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to change the wording a little in the Offline & Disk Space panel.
2. Renaming a folder that is already selected for offline use causes that folder to be no longer selected for offline use. (Same thing happens in Thunderbird 2.0.x.)
3. Even though all IMAP folders are actually being stored locally, the only ones that get compacted locally (via File > Compact Folders) are those selected for offline use in Tools > Account Settings > Offline & Disk Space. Re-indexing all folders (Tools > Index All Messages) also does not compact the folders that are being automatically stored offline. I can't find any way to compact such folders
