I just added a comment to the other somment with what my (theoretically) simple solutions would be, without affecting any of the existing framework or structure.

I do like the default main screen - it is visual & logical in its navigation and layout. We use it on ATV, so there is no keyboard as an option. For couch based navigation, I find the "get in & launch movie as quick as possible" is how I would like to use the product.

My ideas to make it simpler? I would make the following changes to my interface if I could:
Change "Recommendations" to my "Movies" folder
Change "Friends Activity" to my top "Music Playlists"
Leave recently played & recently added as is.
Considering there will be more items than will fit in one row, just have it flow off to the right side so it doesn't affect the main screen layout.

Add icon-only shortcuts to the menu bar at the top (the one that has my name in it right now) that correspond to the items in the "left" menu (movies, music, photos, settings, quit). This would allow you to launch boxee, login, then on main screen click up once, and you are able to launch these sections without having to leave the main screen, or without the fancy swooping etc. that seems to add to my ATV processor load.

agree as well - gets very confusing, completely un-usable by my small children, both of whom can navigate standard appletv no problem.
