A comment on the idea "New features for web app - note/picture box on profile, profile tab interface improvements, issue with nudge on own profile" in Brightkite:
That's actually a good idea. We do have a lot of usability improvements coming in the future, so things like that won't be as confusing. – Lesley, on June 30, 2008 14:36

Lesley, I see that I can click a specific location and post a note or photo (even if I'm not checked in there) but those same options do not appear on the other tabs you mentioned.
DOH! Never mind. I wasn't checked in. Checking in brings the options up.
Feedback - take it for what it's worth.
I'd much prefer to see the functions but have them grayed out or a note saying that I need to check in first.

Ah, wait, just took a minute, Twitter updated... so I'd call this a BK bug in finding my city – Stephen Paul Weber, on May 29, 2008 17:59

If it can't I'd say that's a bug - but I checked in at Waterloo, ON just straight as you said and still no Twitter change (I'm singpolyma on both Twitter and BK) – Stephen Paul Weber, on May 29, 2008 17:58

Based on that link, it could be possible that the database cannot determine what city your are in. Can you try checking in at Waterloo, ON, Canada and see if it can find you that way? – Lesley, on May 29, 2008 17:52

Can you see my checkin at http://brightkite.com/places/3648e625... ? – Stephen Paul Weber, on May 29, 2008 17:35

Checkins are set to city... I can see my own, others should be able to see the city on it... – Stephen Paul Weber, on May 29, 2008 17:34

Are your checkins set to Hidden? I am not seeing your checkin to Waterloo on BK. – Lesley, on May 29, 2008 17:23

I see you're currently checked in at Kitchener, ON, Canada on both Brightkite and Twitter. Can you do a test checkin to a different city (you can delete this after you do it) to see if it doesn't work? – Lesley, on May 29, 2008 17:07

pfoley, when in Private mode Twitter is treated as "Everyone else" so your privacy settings apply. If you want your posts to share to Twitter while in Private mode, you need to set your "Everyone else" settings to either City or Exact. If you select City, then people will be able to see your post and your location at the city level (i.e. Denver, CO). If you select Exact, people will see your post and the exact address where you are posting it from.
Does that answer your question? – Lesley, on May 29, 2008 16:52

Posting to twitter did work for me, but I then switched to private mode, and unchecked sharing options of location to twitter. Now brightkite posts will not appear in twitter. Is twitter considered the "public" that requires me to open up in brightkite as public. If this is the case what does "City" and "Exact" mean in terms of a post - these sound like terms suited to Check in Locations.
