First, I agree that the error message is very confusing. The issue is that the data mapping during the file upload phase is very limited. The platform can only map one date column during this phase. The subsequent mappings can be performed after the data upload.
This is what the error message tries to say. We should make it way more descriptive and suggest the mapping after the upload.

A comment on the idea "Usability annoyance regarding data uploads" in Good Data:
There are few different ways how to load data into a Good Data project. These differ in the amount of data that the product requires from user.
We have started with implementing web UI for the simplest one. We plan on introducing an advanced data loading options that will allow specifying metadata in some more declarative format. We are considering extending the MAQL language with some DDL statements. – ZD, on October 12, 2009 09:38

A comment on the problem "Multiple Date Attributes are not Working (in the new release?)" in Good Data:
Please double-check that you have all dates in the YYYY-MM-DD format and that the month and day have the leading zeroes. Even one incorrect value can prevent the mapping. – ZD, on September 12, 2009 05:43

Tom, I think that I know what is the problem. We have added the NULL date value to the time dimension to support the empty date fields in the uploaded files. We have experienced a specific problem with the mapping that resembles the behavior that you are describing. The problem is with the automatic conversion of the date values. All values that can't be converted to date (even values like last name) are converted to NULL and match the newly added NULL value in the date dimension. I assume that for some reason (bad date format) your values are converted to NULL instead of a date value. I assume that you are using the ISO (YYYY-MM-DD) date format. Can you please double-check that the values are formatted properly and that you are mapping them to the correct format (US vs. ISO)? If all of the above is OK, would it be possible to try to use the US format (MM/DD/YYYY)? Please note that you need to always us the 2 digits for day and month (01 instead just 1) and four digits for the year.
I'm sorry for the inconvenience

Hi Tom,
thank you for sharing this idea with us. We are designing a prompting mechanism that allows defining a variables in reports and metrics. These variables need to be defined when you execute a report. We call these variables prompts. The prompts can be passed to report execution mechanism either implicitly (via some parameters associated with user or user session or project) or explicitly (user specify them at report execution time). I believe that such mechanism would fulfill your needs. I hope that we will have this mechanism in production in next three months.
Please let me know what you think.

Hi Tom,
I recommend you to take a look at my reply to this topic http://getsatisfaction.com/gooddata/t... . Please let me know if you need any further clarification of the COUNT metric syntax.
Best Regards
