Character limit based on service subscriptions please!
Simple problem, simple solution, do it perhaps?
Problem. Some services (plurk for example) restrict to lower (140 characters) per post.
Solution. Please add a parameter to each service that records such limits and then take the lowest common denominator of the targeted services and force the UI to warn/stop you at that limit.
Supremely frustrating to have truncated updates on mismatched services.

Inappropriate? If you are an app developer I think its your responsibility to add a character counter to your app. If you are a user using an app but it doesn't have a character counter then its the developer's fault, but please note that not all apps can have character counters because sometimes it is just hard for the developer to put in or will not work on the platform/or framework the are developing/or are using to develop for their app.

To clarify, my original request/problem applies to traditional web interfaces, in this case the primary Ping.fm one... not instances of using a 3rd party app on a mobile device or something else. -
Inappropriate?Oh well on the main ping.fm's page (dashboard) there is a character counter. Right now I'm not sure if Sean or Adam are going to give you an alert when you reach the character limit but there is a character counter. There is how ever no character counter on the igoogle widget which I wish their was.

The counter is not the problem. And yes, there is an alert. But ping.fm's default size is higher than some of the web-services you are allowed to ping to. It needs to sense that and drop your alert to your lowest char-count value accepted by the services you are trying to ping.
