Does Ping.fm notify users when updates fail on different services?
Earlier today I sent an update via the iGoogle plug-in, but twitter was unavailable so the update didn't appear there. There were no error messages about this on the iGoogle plug-in, but perhaps on the main site there are; my question is - are there? and also would it be possible to add them to the iGoogle plug in?
It would be great to know if an update has failed, then I could go along and update a problem service manually.

Inappropriate?We discussed adding this feature but it will take quite a bit of work. When you post a message it is put in a queue, so you would not get immediate feedback. It would have to be a place on the website you could go to verify the status. I agree this would be a really handy feature. It might be a while before we could implement it due to the workload we have planned now.
For testing, I have saved all my posting sites in a favorites folder in firefox, so I can right click on the folder, open all in tabs, then quickly see all of them. Also, keep in mind it can take a minute for all the sites to be updated, so don't go post the same message until you're sure it failed.

Inappropriate?Plurk was down earlier and I sent a ping while it was down. The message got posted to my other services but not to Plurk, and they've been back up for a while.
Would it be any easier to put the message back in the queue and try it again in a few minutes?

Inappropriate?This is the same situation, it would be nice to have, but much harder than it sounds. For example, if we submit the message to twitter, it might say "ok we got it", but it really didn't, so we'd have to double verify all posts. On the other hand, sometimes we could submit a message and never get a response, but it actually goes though. If we tried those again it might duplicate your posts, and cause even more anger.
I would like to have this working at some point, but with the complexity involved it's low priority on our list.
Besides, that is the beauty of ping.fm. You can blast to multiple services, and if one is down (like twitter seems to be a lot), you still get your message out.

Inappropriate?i realize it's a lot of work but there really should be some kind of feedback otherwise it's totally hit or miss whether or not a message goes through.
unfortunately, even though the other services outage [twitter anyone?] might be the cause, ping.fm is the service being utiltized, so the perception would be it was a failure at ping.fm unless the user was told otherwise.
not saying this is right but i think this is how the user experience would likely play out.
how about giving feedback on a service outage "in general" instead of whether the user's particular message went though?
for example, on hahlo.com there's a banner that pops up saying, if you see this then there's a problem at twitter.
maybe you can return a similar message after a user sends a ping so that the user at least knows that there could be a problem with a particular service.

Inappropriate?There's two problems here: first, its not possible to do a "real time" notify because the pings are queued, and secondly some services lie about the success of posting.
RE the realtime problem - how about sending an e-mail to the user with a specific subject/keyword if a post fails after they submitted it? This way they could filter their mail to delete those messages or file them if they don't want their inbox clogged, but the message would get through that a fail had occurred. Or some kind of ajax popup could poll a "success" variable for each service and update on the screen when the ping was processed and confirmation had been received from the services.
For the problem of lying services, I think this isn't Ping's problem, but if there was an indication of "reported" success or failure it would make it far more obvious where the problem is. If a service like Twitter acknowledges receipt of a message, it should post it - not lose it. If Ping shows the message was acknowledged by Twitter but it doesn't show up, this is then for the user to take up with Twitter - and they would have the technical details they would need to demonstrate to Twitter that its a problem within their service and that *they* need to take ownership of it. Its not up to Ping to fix the world, but it would be helpful if it gave users the information they need to press for change where it is required.

Inappropriate?Personally, I see why it's difficult and it's a low priority addition for me. I understand if things don't get posted b/c site is down, etc. Even if I tried to post it directly to (twitter/etc.) at that moment, it wouldn't happen anyway.
If it's really critical, I'll go to the service directly.
