indenti.ca OpenID and "generic" laconi.ca support
Hi there,
it's great that you're supporting identi.ca already - I just have a couple of suggestions:
- if a user signs up at identi.ca using OpenID, they will not have a password, so will not be able to authenticate at ping.fm, meaning ping.fm can't be used to post to identi.ca in these cases. Is there some way you can authenticate an identi.ca user using the OpenID they used to sign up there?
- identi.ca runs on the "laconi.ca" OS software, meaning anyone can install their own servers, and federate with identi.ca and other laconica servers. If would be great if you could provide support for "generic" laconi.ca servers, where a user specifies their profile URL (e.g. I would like to enter "http://menti.name/laconica/mario", which would then enable me to post to my own laconica instance from ping.fm).
Cheers,
Mario.

Inappropriate?I have a fix! Do the "lost password" on identi.ca and it will let you set a password, even if you use OpenID. (Note, log out of identi.ca before you use the login link you get via email.)
-
Well, I should be clear... my "fix" is just to assign a password to an account that does not have one due to signing up with OpenID. -
Good idea! Thanks. -
Inappropriate?Setting up the password (as suggested by Pete above) specifically for ping.fm to access identi.ca works for me, but I'm lazy and it would be good if ping.fm handled my OpenId's for me...
(But the more I think about it, the bigger the can of worms I can see being opened - In theory, I only have to give Ping.FM my OpenID 'once' so it can maybe use it on sites that require it, but on my OpenID server, who do I authenticate/allow? Would/Should it be Ping.FM or the site requiring it... dang... I'll have to think this through again later on... so much for a quick 5sec comment post whilst on a work break... given myself a headache now)
I’m undecided

Inappropriate?Sounds like a perfect time to use http://oauth.net/

Inappropriate?I think the issue has been resolved. I was having this issue yesterday. Today, I logged into identi.ca and clicked the Settings link, then the password tab. It let me set a new password for the account. When I used my nickname and password in Ping.fm, it authenticated just fine.

Inappropriate?Yes, I think Evan at Identi.ca has fixed the OpenID/password issue.
Still, I guess the second part of my request is still valid - I would like Ping.fm to post to my own hosted laconi.ca installation, so we'd need some way to set up posting to an OpenMicroBlogging URL rather than anything hardcoded to a particular laconi.ca installation like Identi.ca.

Inappropriate?Great idea, if I am reading this right. I would really love to be able to post to Leo Laporte's new laconi.ca micro

Inappropriate? We're planning on supporting generic Laconi.ca installations. We're just trying to find the best way to approach it.

this is one of the best points

Inappropriate? What about contacting the author of the popular Ping.fm script? Right now its working for the Twit army, but I cant imagine he would mind opening it up
-
well...I would like to have my custom script for something else...
