Inappropriate?Is this broken temporarily? This morning i attempted to verify my account and got this 503 error message. (See attached screen shot)

You just verified a new IM account? It still fails for me, although i note YIM's error message is a 404 while the jabber error message is a 503. -

Yes indeed - -you didn't answer my question: when you say "Works for me" are you saying you have successfully verified a ping.fm IM account? Or that using IM works with ping.fm. It is reasonable to suspect that the code for verification could be additional to the handling of message traffic and could fail while the message traffic continues to succeed.

I went back and tried just now. Yahoo worked (yay). Still the 503 error with gmail/jabber/adium/mac.

*blush* other systems like Yahoo don't need the explicit add a user (or the client sync with the address book where i list the users worked better. I *added* the ping user then sent and it worked fine. So sorry for the trouble. *adds this to list of stupid gaffes earlier in the week*

Inappropriate?I used Psi (on my Mac) to set up Jabber and Gmail accounts. For users like the ping.fm user, what I did was added them through Psi and immediately a popup comes back asking for authorization. I've seen iChat do this as well, but it's much much slower. After authorized, I close Psi and use iChat as usual.

Inappropriate?p.s. - I just noticed that you said you get the same error with YIM. If you haven't tried different services, you might do that and see if that fixes the issue. I had to do that before finding one that didn't crap out on me. The one I use now is xmpp.org.uk. They have service for AIM, Yahoo, MSN, and ICQ (I'm sure they have more, but the fact that they had all four of those at once impressed me).
I see you're using Adium. A while back, they were having some issues with their Jabber plugin. I could be wrong about that, but it might be worth it to check for updates to Adium, or go to their web site and see if there are any posts in their forum about jabber errors. Thanks - very helpful and thorough! Adium is up-to-date on my system. The Jabber component of adium works well with google's jabber well for use with identi.ca: i post from different jabber accounts to different identi.ca accounts. Looks like the last message in the Adium search was from 2007.

Inappropriate?I'm glad I was able to shed a little light on certain issues... when I first used jabber, it was terribly difficult for me to understand ;) I hope your problem with this has been solved. However, if it hasn't I'd be happy to try to help.
