People who ask about Ping through SMS read this.
There are tons and tons of messages about SMS with Ping.fm and i think something should be said to stop all the asking.
Text to Ping IS COMING on the home page it says
"Ping.fm accepts text,
images and soon video!"
but
The only official way right now is if your phone supports text to email:
http://ping.fm/email/
to find what email address to send it to
But there are other ways also
By AIM:
Send a message saying "send pingfm [verification code here]" to aimaim(246246) get your verification code at http://ping.fm/im/aim/ The first time you do that it will need you AIM login info and then will automatically put your status as "Your IM has been sent to my mobile device. When I receive it, I will be able to reply. Thanks for your IM! Want your IMs forwarded to your phone? Click here"
Go ahead and send another one to "send pingfm [put your status here]" to that same number.
For iPhone(or ipod touch) users:
You can use the AIM method or you can point your web browser to i.ping.fm
For other phones with web browsers:
Go to m.ping.fm
For people in the UK:
Use the guide at
http://dan-lane.livejournal.com/61360...
The first 2 steps should already be done. Find your USERID at http://ping.fm/email/
Once again, for official Text to Ping, patience is needed its expensive and takes time to set up and integrate a SMS gateway.

Sorry for the mass confusion here. We're working rather hard on getting a true SMS system going. It's a taxing and expensive process, but nonetheless will be here. Multiple carriers support e-mailing SMS, which is why we mention it on the site. The large requests for "true" SMS. We've recently put into a testing phase, our SMS solution for providers and phones that cannot e-mail to SMS and will be making the service public soon. Thanks again for your patience on this and overall understanding.

Sure, it takes time to implement and that is fine, but the front page for Ping.fm specifically states:
Mobile Phone / SMS / MMS
iPhone, iPod Touch or standard mobile phone text messaging.
which is very confusing because I spent 15minutes looking for this option. yes, the service is in beta and I can live with service hiccups, missing features, etc. But this looks like it has been implemented already, which is incredibly confusing.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Hm, so there's no SMS -> PING right now? If so, then why does it say on the homepage that there is, just like bogart said?
I feel like they are trying to pull a leg on us...
I’m very disappointed.

Ya your leg is pulled for whatever reason they decided to say that, i dunno... -
Inappropriate?sol87,
Thank you for writing about this. I think we all appreciate the hard work you put into this response.
I'm sure we're all a little upset that there's no direct SMS service yet, but at the very least sol87 went through a lot of effort to clarify and provide some options.
Ping, if you're reading, we're eager for the direct SMS service. I use Twitter's direct SMS and would rather use Ping.
Happy Holidays!
Will
I’m eagerly awaiting Ping's direct SMS service.

No problem! and thanks!
...but i really like ping so far and alot of other people do too the only thing holding anyone back from going crazy for it is lack of sms, maybe they know that and are waiting to get better hardware or something. -
Inappropriate? If you were using ColdFusion you could integrate SMS in less than one business day!

Inappropriate?I just signed up because I saw this "...standard mobile phone text messaging." on the front page of ping.fm and thought "Perfect!"
But it is not available... Yet.
Is there an approximate time line for this feature? Q1, Q2 of 2009?
I’m confident

Never? :( -
Im not an official representative or anything so your guess is as good as mine =/ -
Inappropriate? Most (but maybe not all) sms will send to e-mail. You need to put in the e-mail address instead of the cell number
-
Inappropriate? This isn't so bad really, in theory. Except that the standard message is 160 characters, and you waste however many of those on an email address which leaves you with much fewer characters available for the update. While most phones allow you to go "over" and it will break up your text messages into multiples, I'm guessing that the "email text" feature doesn't repiece the messages back into one post.
I think that you should remove or reword the part that says something about SMS messaging because it's deceiving. I look at it, and often spend quite a few minutes looking around the site hoping that there's some mysterious link I've been missing. Tonight I happened to click "help" only to find that it's teetering on "false advertising." I've been on ping.fm for quite some time, but I rarely use it because it's simply not nearly as easy to use the various mobile versions of the site as it would be to simply text it (as you can with Twitter).
I'm glad it's in the works though. I hope it shows up soon. I might start using ping.fm a WHOLE lot more if it does.
