SMS is *not* supported so please don't claim that it is.
Why does ping.fm say 'Use AIM, GTalk, iGoogle, WAP, iPhone/iPod Touch, SMS' when you can't currently send an SMS to post to ping.fm ?

Inappropriate?SMS is supported if you can SMS an e-mail address. We know this doesn't include everyone, but does give us ability to claim to support SMS. We're opening our SMS gateway soon for everyone who can't SMS to E-mail.
Hold tight!

When i send a ping via sms email it doesnt show up on any of my networks, im thinking im sending it to the wrong email but i dont know what email do i send it to? -
look on http://ping.fm/dashboard/ under "posting address". it will be 6 random letters @ping.fm -
hmm ok i sent a email from my phone (7601234567@vmobl.com) to it but it didnt do anything, any idea why its not working? -
In this case, you could say that Ping supports posting by Smoke Signal (as long as your local fire department will send emails based on the Smoke Signals they see). -
SMS for the vast majority of people does not require getting their phone on the internet, which for the vast majority people is not something they know how to do. It is also expensive to use the internet on a mobile phone whereas SMS text messages are often inclusive/free as part of a contract. This means it is anything but the same thing, it's not even similar.
Perhaps I should say I drive a Ferrari because a teenager, upon seeing my car once, thought I did, my car in reality is worth 100th the value of a typical Ferrari. -
when is this opening up going to happen? You said "soon" three months ago... -
Honestly, that's pretty lame... -
This was now "soon" five months ago. Status? -
Inappropriate? As a temporary solution, I believe aim and yahoo (maybe gtalk) support sms messaging. You could set up posting though our im bots, then use the sms to im to get to ping. I haven't tried this and i'm not sure if your provider will charge extra, but it might be a workaround until we get our own sms gateway.

Inappropriate?Ping.fm's "SMS to an e-mail address" is not SMS. To send an e-mail message from a phone you will be using the MMS service of the phone.
I’m indifferent

Inappropriate?Still hoping for SMS support. In the UK (and often outside USA), to send by SMS, you would send it to a UK number something like +447123 123 123 as shown by Twitter and Brightkite, never to an email address, that is just the American perception of SMS. The vast majority of the world is not the same as America and does not have SMS email, zip codes or the other things that so many American sites seem to assume the rest of the world has.
With mobile technology however, Europe is actually far ahead of America, which is why iPhone 3G came out only when American 3G coverage grew.
I’m undecided

Inappropriate?yes, it is really irritating. My phone does not support MMS (only SMS). You really should clarify that only MMS is supported.
Lying to potential users is not going to help you gain market share.
I won't be back.
I’m irritated

Well, just for you, I've added "MMS" to accompany SMS. And while SMS may not suit YOUR device principals, it does fit some. That's why it's there. It's a shame you wont be back, seeing as we are putting in an SMS serving utility in sometime soon. Maybe you'll be back! :) -
Thank you Sean. I'm happy to hear that you will be adding traditional SMS soon. -
Inappropriate?I think it is great that you plan to offer SMS. The fact remains that you currently do not. SMS via email is MMS. Telling your customers that SMS is supported is INNACURATE.
I am frustrated because i registered for an account AND gave you my twitter account login/pw trusting that your website did not make false claims. I then discovered that my efforts were useless since I cannot use your service. I am sure that you can understand why this would rub me the wrong way.
