Three critical things for Ping.fm to be usable
Biggest three things I can think of that are pretty important for me to be able to use Ping.fm. Right now you're close - the closest thing out there that I've found - but I still can't use the site all the time for all updates. Here's what stands in my way:
- Update via SMS (text message) - I might just be missing this functionality?
- Allow filters to work with a subset of services. Example, I might want to update status on Twitter, Myspace, and Facebook, but *not* LinkedIn.
- Support for multiple accounts. Example, if I have two Myspace accounts, four twitter accounts, etc...

jon: I looked at that, but it doesn't seem to have the capability to build a trigger, say #personal, that only posts on a subset of the available sites. As an example, I use LinkedIn for work use, and Myspace and Facebook for personal use. I don't want the same messages going to both - the existing filters don't appear to fit that. I *could* use one or the other, but if I'm having to post my message to four different sites manually, didn't I just eliminate the usefulness of last.fm in the first place? -

Ancyru: Personally, no. But most people would get charged for those, so I expect it'd make a difference. I can't consider last.fm until it's available for sms use from my market, which is north america. It'd be a neat personal tool, but not something that I can recommend, since SMS has become such an important means of updating the microblog sites.

I built a sms-to-ping.fm gateway too (sms.blogbound.com) since it's free to receive sms in the uk and it's half a day's work to set up (using redsms). The only cost would be if you needed shortcodes or a dedicated number.

We are a free service with no ads. Based on our current income of $0/mo, we can not afford the cost of SMS. This will be one of the first features we add once we can cover the cost of it.

The custom triggers allow you to do this. Perhaps we need more documentation explaining this process. http://ping.fm/triggers/

check/uncheck services as desired.

There are a few reasons we have not done this yet. We plan on adding this in the future, but there are other things of higher priority right now. You are welcome to set up two ping.fm accounts in the meantime.

i was gonna suggest the multiple ping.fm accounts thing (that's what i do) but wasn't sure if it was kosher :D.

On custom triggers: What if I want to build a custom trigger for a service I have setup as a microblog and others that I have setup as status updates? The custom trigger system appears to only allow me to build a trigger based on how I have categorized them (status, blog, micro blog) rather than literally choosing the specific services that I would want the trigger to send to. So it would be impossible for me to build a custom trigger that would update facebook and wordpress in my situation since I have facebook as a status, and wordpress as a blog. I think this is what the original author was trying to get at.

Inappropriate?I agree. But I've been updating via SMS. Since AIM just released their AIM TXT mobile Text app.. you can sign on AIM via text messaging commands, and send the Ping.fm AIM Bot your update. But I do think a SMS number for ping like that of Twitter's would be very helpful as well. Since not everyone has AIM.

Inappropriate?Easy, try this link. It's not an app, it's just using text messages to sign on, send messages, and retrieve your buddy list. Any phone can use it, even without any aim app. Here's the link: http://mobile.aol.com/aolproducts/aimtxt
You just sign on by typing "ScreenName Password" without the quotes to 246 246. Then send "pingfm Your update" to 246 246. It's that easy. I use it all the time.

Inappropriate?The multiple accounts is an important one for me. If you need to start somewhere, I vote for the Custom URL... That feature is one of the most important for me right now. I don't know of anyone who has two MySpace accounts... Twitter, maybe... but I've got a few blogs that I want to update w/ the Custom URL (thanks to Matt's awesome WP plugin!!) and it would be a huge help. -
Inappropriate?What I don't get is if you really do have four Twitter accounts. Why would you want them all to say the same thing every time? What would be the point in having so many accounts if they're all going to be updated the exact same? Multiple MySpace accounts is understandable. But Multiple Twitter, just pointless to me.

You wouldn't. But you can use the custom triggers to target a specific one. Say you run a SMB and want to keep people posted on events... ping @tt-smb. Wanna send your movie plans to your friends, ping @tt-friends. It's about Web 2.0 work/life balance. :-)
And I don't understand multiple MySpace pages. You are who you are, right? I don't know of anyone that has two or more. But I suppose you can make the same argument... musicians often do that I hear. I couldn't tell you for sure... I'm a Facebook guy. -
Okay, I got it now.. it would be easier to update via cell phone that way. Since each device can only have one account on Twitter.
