Cannot log on to Pixelpipe using Fotofox on Ubuntu 8.04
Firstly, I am very impressed with Fotofox--I think it is great! However, I am not able to log on to the Pixelpipe service using Fotofox on Ubuntu 8.04 (AMD64).
I click on the Fotofox toolbar button to open Fotofox in the sidebar. I then click on the "login" link, and select the "PixelPipe" photo service. I then press the "Continue" button. I then get a popup window that says,
"Authenticate Pixelpipe
Once you have given authorization, click 'Done' to return to Fotofox."
There is a grayed out "Done" button, and an active "Cancel" button. Nothing else happens. I presume that a window would show a login session to Pixelpipe, and ask for authorization to allow Fotofox to access my Pixelpipe account, but that doesn't happen.
Is there something I have missed, or is this a genuine problem?
Thanks,
Jon

Inappropriate? After you log-in to Pixelpipe you should see the following dialog with a strange looking button (we'll fix that) that says "Grant access for FotoFox". Select the button and you should be authenticated and ready to upload.
Let me know if you can't see the button and we'll investigate further.

Inappropriate?Hi again Brett!
Thanks for your quick response. I'm afraid that I don't even get to log-in to Pixelpipe, so I don't get the strange looking button you show.
What I do get is shown in the attached images:
--a regular Firefox window, with the FotoFox in the sidebar, and
--a popup dialog window which is pretty much blank.
Hope that helps,
Jon

Inappropriate?Pitching in quickly here, does it work when adding Flickr/23/Zoomr (you don't need an account to test this, just see if it asks you to signin), or do you get the same empty dialog? If you get the same empty dialog, you've got a problem, or Fotofox has with your system; otherwise there's something odd going on between your system and our site.
-
Inappropriate?Jacob,
Great suggestion. Indeed, I get the same problem when I try to sign in to my Flickr account. So, as you suggest, there could be a problem with my system. I guess that's somewhat good news for you, as it means it's probably not a widespread problem...
I'll try to give you as many details of my system as I can, if that helps.
Fotofox 1.1.1
Firefox 3.0.3
Ubuntu 8.04 running on an AMD64 system (I suspect that this is the unusual part of the equation...)
Can't immediately think of anything else that might be relevant.
Hope that helps, and thanks for your input.
Jon
I’m caught out by an odd platform...

Inappropriate?I was able to work around the Fotofox issue by uninstalling Fotofox, restarting my browser and installing again. Not a pretty fi however it was effective.

Inappropriate?Hi Brett,
Great suggestion. I did as you recommended, but unfortunately there was no success. I did happen to notice, however, that when I select one of the following accounts, I got a login dialog as shown below:
-- Kodak Easyshare
-- Tabblo
-- Marela
-- SmugMug
All the other accounts failed to play ball, and gave me the "blank" dialog as described previously.
Cheers,
Jon
I’m stumped.

Inappropriate?Jon,
Are there any errors in the error console that might be related? Tools->Error Console. -
Inappropriate?Hi there Brian,
Thanks for your suggestion, and apologies for not getting back to you sooner. Yes, I do see some errors in the Error Console:
Error: fotofoxOverlay is not defined
Source File: chrome://fotofox/content/bindings/thumbnail.xml
Line: 106
Error: Components.classes['@briks.si/fotofox;1'] is undefined
Source File: chrome://fotofox/content/js/services/pixelpipe/pixelpipePhotoService.js
Line: 68
(Erm, are you the Brian King/briks mentioned in the .js/.xml source? Looks like you are *the* guy to turn to here... ;)
Many thanks,
JOn
I’m impressed I'm talking to the original developer!

Inappropriate?Hi Jon,
Yup, that's me! The first error is known and will be fixed in the next release. It is harmless. What that second error is telling me is that the XPCOM component is not registering on your system, which means some of the photo services will not work. Which is odd, because it was built on Ubuntu 8.04. I will look into it and get back to you.
I’m confused

Inappropriate?Hi Brian,
Many thanks for your message--much appreciated. If there is anything I can help with, do let me know, otherwise I hope your digging around is not too time consuming.

Inappropriate?Hi Jon,
Sorry about the delayed response. I actually did try it last week and everything is working fine for me. However, it could be that you are missing a binary dependency. We have just overhauled our build system with the goal of making our binaries and the extension in general more robust. The first version (v1.2) made from that system will be released within a week.
In the meantime, you can try the following:
$ sudo apt-get build-dep firefox
Note this will pull a lot of software on to your machine that you do not need, but it may solve the dependency problem.

Inappropriate?Hi Brian,
Many apologies my not replying to you sooner.
My problem has been solved--I can successfully use Fotofox to upload to Pixelpipe. I rebuilt my home machine recently, and decided to install Ubuntu 8.10 i386. Fotofox works perfectly.
(Probably doesn't help you debug what the problem might have been, so I apologise for that, but the good news is that you have a happy user of your great add-on.)
Thanks for you input over the past couple of months.
All the best,
Jon
I’m thankful
