Inappropriate?this is a really really great idea, it could also be purely backend/server side, and could even simply be applied to every place added. Off the top of my head though, I'm feeling like there might be terms of use restrictions for caching/storing those images (if they can even be accessed individually). But I'll surely put it on my list.

Inappropriate?I'm adding this post to say that it is possible to do something like what you suggest now, although granted it requires a couple of extra steps (but shouldn't mean exiting Nearby).
Here's how:
1. Set the map up the way you want it.
2. Press the home and power buttons down together. You'll see the display flash and a screenshot (i.e. an image of the entire screen including the map exactly you have set it up) will be saved to a Photo Album called "Saved Photos".
You have access to these screenshots through the Photos application on your iPod Touch. But that's not what we're interested in here. You can also access them through Nearby.
3. Create a new marker.
4. Click the 'Add Photo' placeholder on the 'Add Marker' screen.
5. You should see the 'Saved Photos' album in your 'Photo Albums' list.
6. Select the album and then the screenshot.
7. You'll be able to move and scale the image which will allow you to expand the capture so that the interface elements are pushed out of view leaving just the map.
8. Click the 'Choose' button and continue to create your place.
This is assuming Nearby behaves the same on the Touch and the iPhone. I have an iPhone but not a Touch, so these instructions may be slightly off but should be just about right.
