From now on!
For all our current closed beta users, Twitter integration is now available.
To activate it, go to your account panel ("Manage" in the bar on top) and then click on "Plazes extensions" and on "Publish on Twitter". Insert your account information for Twitter and voilá, you're ready to go.
Your newly created activities will be posted to Twitter in the format "At [Plazename] ([City], [Country]) "[Status information]", [Date] [Time]", but only if your marked it as "public".
An example: phikappa at Plazes Berlin (BERLIN, Germany) "Talking with myself on GetSatisfaction", 04 Jun 2008 09:45)
Later on, we will also add a link to the activity you've just created on Plazes.com to your tweet.
For now this feature is only for plazes.com closed beta users. When we'll go live, it will be for everyone. Huzzah!
I’m utterly ecstatic!

Inappropriate?I've just tried this and it has posted my location in German?
http://twitter.com/andypiper/statuses...
Any intention of updating the Twitter location field? That's what Brightkite (optionally) does.
I’m undecided
-
Inappropriate? You're wasting way too many of the precious 140 characters.
- remove the timestamp (Twitter already has one)
- put the message in front of the location, remove the quotes (Twitter is all about messaging)
- remove the location and use Twitter's location capabilities (see http://blog.programmableweb.com/2008/...)
- ...or at least abbreviate the country (UK instead of United Kingdom) and remove the comma separator
And last but not least: let the users customize the format.
I’m not impressed
-
I'm with you with most of the clutter. But the timestamp.... Plazes lets me post activities in past, present, and future. And I wouldn't want to confuse my friends by saying that I'm in that bar now while I'll only get there in a couple of hours to meet up with them.
So in my point of view: Stay with the timestamp (taking it out when the activity is now of course would be grand). -
IMHO a past activity shouldn't end up on twitter NOW. Twitter is about what you are doing, not what you did the day before yesterday. -
Inappropriate?Hi guys,
thank you so much for the feedback, that's what a beta is all about.
oo, you are absolutely right, currently the tweet is far too cluttered and we are already rethinking it's format (quite unsurprisingly, your suggestions have hit the nail on the head).
Andy, very very probably you're using the closed beta website in it's german version, that is why it's appearing in german. shouldn't happen, will very very probably be changed.
obviously we still need to tweak the feature here and there, but for the release everything should be fine. in the meanwhile, you've just helped making the next plazes.com a little better ;)
I’m confident
-
This hasn't changed yet, right? It would be nice if I could customize the tweet. A while ago, Plazes had Skype integration (for the mood message) and it completely allowed the user to customiye the tweet. Otherwise this twitter integration is not very useful in its current state. -
Inappropriate?Hm, I tried it out, but it's just silently failing for me ... no update on twitter. I already changed the language on plazes to see if that was the problem, but that didn't change anything ...
-
Inappropriate?Maybe only post current activities to twitter?
-
Inappropriate?Hi Kaspar, could you please provide an example of a Plazes activity that has not been posted on Twitter?
Oo might be right: we post, indeed, only activities planned for the same day, if you were planning something for the future, then you won't see it on Twitter.
We think that Twitter is more about what's happening now, but if you think that our integration should work differently, we are ready to follow your suggestions.

These are the ones I tried out. These have been all "Now"-Activities, none of them in the future.
Now, fiddling around with the twitter-extension settings, I realised the form asked for the twitter-*mail* (I used my username before – or rather: the username was already entered, whether by Firefox or by using the plazes profile information I don't know, and didn't change it). After changing that, I got the bezel with the confirmation that updates will be sent. I added a new activity – but twitter didn't get updated.
In the twitter extension settings, the login data has been reset to my username. Even more so, the option to stop sending updates has vanished (which lets me assume that plazes isn't currently sending updates ...*). Updating the login data again gives me the confirmation bezel, but the data has vanished upon the next visit. And of course no update is sent to twitter ... I'm afraid I kinda messed things up now ...
---
* As an aside, I think the interface should be improved in that respect – it would be very nice to have an overview of all the services plazes is sending updates to; and in each service's settings a clear statement whether it is active or not (e.g. "Plazes is currently sending your updates to twitter.")
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?Oh wow, you are really helpful Kaspar!
I think I'll ask some help by my colleague who developed the extension and then I will come back to you. He will appreciate all the suggestions you have and will also fix the problem.

Inappropriate?I just made a new activity – and now, it got published to twitter ... looks like the problem is solved (though I have *no* idea, why ...) ^_^
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Signed for plazes and would like to have twitter access on my account if possible.
Thanks
Wayne
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?Hi Wayne, the twitter integration is currently only available for the closed beta testers. However the official launch is going to be very soon and you don't have to wait too much for it!
I’m excited
