Can display names be 'stolen'?
While I'm using a display name which is different from my username, can somebody else come along and register it as their username and take it away from me?

Inappropriate?Just an idea, why not test it?

And get accused of malicious intent? -
Inappropriate? It's a hard thing to test easily with secondary accounts because you can't change display name until you reach 30 karma. (I was about to try then realized that).

Actually, Greg wanted to test if someone could register his display name. So that's fairly easy to test. -
your login name never changes, so no one can ever register your login name (which is also your plurk url). But someone can have their display name show as your login name if they wanted to. Also someone can register as your display name if it's not in use as a login, but it won't remove that display name from you. -
Well I wasn't going to test stealing my or an active user account name. So it was the "test victim" account that is hard to set up (without waiting for karma). But I really think this is not possible to steal the registration username of another plurker this way... only to mimic them via display name changes. (as others demonstrate below). -
Inappropriate?In short, yes.

(note: Only changed name for the screenshot, changed back immediately after.)
Although "take away from you" is not accurate. As you can see from the screenshot, someone can take on the screenname you have now, even while you are still using it, although obviously the links will still go back to their profile for their comments. And if someone takes on yours while you have yours changed, that won't prevent you from changing yours back.
I’m indifferent

Inappropriate?well, the situation doesn't make me totally happy but THIS part is good news:
>And if someone takes on yours while you have yours changed, that won't prevent >you from changing yours back. -

Multiple threads about the same topic makes it unnecessarily difficult to follow all of the issues, so hopefully I wasn't guilty of that. Unfortunately, getSatisfaction doesn't ID the date/timestamps, and both of these threads are marked "3 months ago." In any case, thanks for the link.
