Can't turn off "timeline follow"
On my Friends menu I have toggled "timeline follow" to OFF for a few of my Friends. Their plurks keep showing up on my Timeline anyway. I don't want to dump friends and send their Karma down, but my timeline will start to get more crowded, and I'm getting tired of muting individual plurks since they are always by the same few people.

With the help of the great community, this bug is now fixed. Thanks for those that emailed me.
In the future: you just unfollow a friend to unfollow this person.
If you have some friends, that are unfollowed, but you still receive plurks from them, then do following: Go to their profile page, follow them and then unfollow them (this will reset the following).
Hope it works this time.

@whoali:
I think the reason you only see some messages is that they send private messages to you... These aren't affected by the following/unfollowing, i.e. you will receive them.
The person won't loose that much karma if you unfriend them (they only loose karma if a lot of people unfriend them).
I suggest cleaning up your friend list - it's meant for people you care about and trust.

I've signed out and signed in again, but I can still see plurks from people I've marked as "timeline follow" off. If there is some other option I need to select, please let me know. Thanks. -
Oh, I got it - I closed the browser, opened it again, marked everyone to Follow, logged out, logged back in, set a few friends to Not Follow, hopped on one foot, and some part of that combination made it work. Thanks! -
This is strange - a new plurk from one of the people I "unfollowed" showed up in my timeline just now, but it's the ONLY plurk from this person that I can see. -
Inappropriate?I'm impressed at the responsiveness from plurk. Another plus of plurk over twitter.
Keep up the good work
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?I'm still having people I've turned "off" coming up on my timeline. :-(
I’m confused, sad, and frustrated.
-
Inappropriate? The plurks you are seeing, are they private? (Private plurks have a little lock on them). The thing is this: Friends can private plurk you and you will see these Plurks, even if you don't follow them.
-
Inappropriate? No, they're not private plurks. I went back and had a close look at the people that should not be showing up on my timeline. The strange thing is, it doesn't seem to be ALL of their plurks, just some. I'll keep an eye on it in the next day or so and stop back with another report.
Anyone else still seeing this issue come up? -
Inappropriate? No Amir, they are public plurks.
Last night at~ 8ish pacific time I turn on, then off timeline follow for a few people then logged out then back in. So now my timeline looks like what Rebecca descibed in the comment above; there are comments from these people AFTER 8ish, but not before.
I’m annoyed
-
Inappropriate?I'm still getting them too, I know several people are. It was really discussed last night when several people (including myself) were getting the same message repeatedly from one plurker, and unfollowing their plurks (in case they weren't trying to spam but having a bug problem somewhere) didn't work.
Right now, the only way I can not get someone's plurks is to unfriend them, as much as I hate to do it.
I’m disappointed, I love the idea of this feature.
-
Inappropriate?I'm having the same problem. There are a couple people on my friends list that post an ungodly amount of plurks that bear no use to myself. I'm at the point where I'm ready to remove them and just keep them as fans because of this issue.
I’m aggrivated
-
Inappropriate?I"m havignthe same probelm-- sory I didn't see this thread before.
I'm still having people I've turned "off" coming up on my timeline. :-(
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate? This is still happeneing. In fact, there was one I wished not ot 'follow' and that person has just re-appeared on my timeline!
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I finally deleted the person that I didn't want to follow. It's great that many people have time to plurk all day long, but when you are getting really annoying plurks half the time about topics you really don't care to discuss, it's frustrating when you can't turn their following off. I don't have much patience for immaturity and that's what I was stuck looking at.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I, too, am still having this problem. lekdawg25 is a friend who I don't follow. I have tried following, then unfollowing him (but have not unfriended him, due to the hit in karma I'd get). Nothing works. This has been going on for about 2 weeks now. A sample of a plurk that shows up in my timeline of his is http://www.plurk.com/p/15gmo .
Ideas?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? To those still having issues: Try to follow the person and then unfollow. (If you tried this before, then redo it as we have fixed some bugs :)).
-
Inappropriate?Sorry, no, that didn't work; followed then unfollowed and plurks are still showing up in timeline. Grrr!
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?i concur this did not solve the problem. i am still following a friend that I do not want to follow.
I’m so sad
-
Inappropriate?I also just tried this -- it is not working. Do I need to follow, then wait for an hour/a day or something, and then unfollow? I've tried giving it 10, 30, 60, and 120 second waits between following, then unfollowing.
In fact, I just added a new friend I'm not following, and it's still showing up.
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?I can't reproduce this bug on my local setup :-(
Do you unfollow a person from "My friends" or from their profile page?
Does the interface show that you have unfollowed a person (the red "follow button" should turn to blue). -
It does show that the person is unfollowed on their page when I go to shut off their timeline. it then changes to ask if I want to follow their timeline. -
Inappropriate?amir: yes i do the unfollow from the "my friends" section off of my own profile. and yes it will show that i have unfollowed the person with the red "off" icon
not sure what you mean about the red turning to blue - if i go to that persons page it will show "follow username plurks" in blue
i can give you my login to play with?
I am using an xp machine with firefox 3 not sure if that helps you
-
Inappropriate? It's still not working for me.
Amir, I unfollow the person from "My Friends", and I don't ever see the "Follow Timeline" button turn blue. It's only ever green/on or red/off.
As Breanne mentioned, I can go to the person's plurk page and their dashboard indicates that he/she is my friend but I'm not following.
Also on XP, FF3.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Amir, I've unfollowed both from My Friends and from their pages and still have the same issue. I unfollowed someone for the first time this morning and am still receiving their messages.
When I unfollow from their page, it does show that I've unfollowed (the red turns blue)...and still shows when I go back to their page later after receiving the messages.
When I unfollow from "My Friends" I have noticed that if I go to another page of the list and go back, that it no longer shows I've unfollowed that person. I have to unfollow them and close the My Friends box on that page for it to show up, but I still receive messages from them.
Another thing I've noticed is that it is sporatic. I don't receive *every* message they send, so it works somewhat, but I still receive perhaps 1 out of 5 messages from them. Don't know if that helps any, but thought it was interesting.
I’m frustrated that it's not working but glad you're working on it.
-
Inappropriate?Hi Amir, I'm trying this from the person's page/timeline directly, not from "My Friends." Teeg's comments are exactly what's up with me as well. I recommend looking at the link I provided above. That individual continues to *only sporadically* show up on my timeline. If I follow that person, I get all of their posts. If I unfollow them, the "sticky" ones remain (about 1 in 10 or so).
Hope this helps... -
Inappropriate?I'm also having this issue (http://www.plurk.com/user/jamesbuckin... is my profile)... I have tried unfollowing on the friend panel, and from those particular friends pages, but I still get their plurks in my timeline. :'(
I’m sad

Inappropriate?Amir, is this item considered closed by Plurk? I read your last response, checked follow for all my friends, then unfollowed about 5 people, logged out of plurk and then back in. Those people are still showing up on my timeline.
These are public, not private plurks.
I’m frustrated
-
after reading Kim's and wohali's comments, I gave it another go and tried to unfollow several people. A couple of them aren't posting new plurks right now, but one person is and those plurks are on my timeline. -
Inappropriate?Plurk had a bit of downtime just a bit ago. After it came back up I was able to go in and turn the timeline follow on for my "problem" user and then turn it back off. Worked like a charm this time! Thanks for your hard work Amir and company!
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?@amir - No, they're not private plurks to me, nor are they clique related.
However! Kim is correct - suddenly now it is no longer broken. I can refollow, then unfollow, and the problem is gone. Thank you for whatever change you made!
I’m pleased.
-
Inappropriate?Great that it's fixed. We don't really know what we changed, but hey, it's fixed now :-D
-
It's not fixed. I'm still experiencing this issue daily. -
Inappropriate?Actually it's not fixed. It's just more sporadic than it used to be. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Still, it works more often than it doesn't so improvements have been made. lol
I’m amused
-
Inappropriate?Alright, I spoke to soon. Going in to turn "timeline follow" on, then off again will get rid of all the old updates (if I turn them on, I see a double timeline from this user) but I'll still see this user's new updates. I can keep doing this with each update they post and their updates will fall out of my timeline but any new updates they make after that still squeak through. Basically, I get rid of the past but anything in the future will still be seen.
Could it be that there are glitches with certain user accounts that were created.. say on a specific day or time? Would it be helpful if we gave you the user accounts that we're having trouble with, Amir?
I’m hopeful that we can find a resolution.
-
Inappropriate?Amir,
It's not fixed for me. Did the follow/unfollow/log off/log on dance last night. I've unfollowed 5 people - 3 have not plurked at all since then according to their user pages, the other 2 have been plurking and it from what I can tell all of those new plurks are in my timeline.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?still not fixed. friends i unfollow immediately disappear from the timeline, but when i refresh it they show up again.
the clutter is so frustrating, especially when checking through mobile, that i had to delete a few people as friends, until this unfollow function (or leave freinds as fan) works.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I have to agree with the above post by Kim Fenolio. It cleaned up the old posts in the timeline, but I am still getting "bleefthrough" posts from the same individuals on occasion. I can't explain why.
I’m unhappy but I know how it is with Heisenbugs.
-
Inappropriate?Same thing's happening to me. But it's only happening to the people I've unfollowed recently, like a couple of days ago. The other people I"ve unfollowed before are not appearing on my timeline though.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I unfollowed two people today and I am still receiving plurks from both of them that are not private and not sent to a clique. I unfollowed them hours ago and refreshed the browser since then, no luck.
I unfollowed them from their profile page and they show up in my friends list as not being followed but I've gotten at least ten messages from the combination of the two since I unfollowed.
I don't want to insult them by unfriending them because they seem like nice people but their plurks are inane. They deserve it but I'm trying to be nice. :D
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I figured out the problem (and yes, it is a BUG). The unfollowed person's plurks do not show up on the timeline regularly, but responses to their plurks show up as responses. When I click view all responses, their plurks show up because responses to their plurks show up. It happens even when none of the responders are in my friends list, so the query that gets the responses is not obeying the unfollow rule. (And it is not a "feature" that plurks are showing up because my friend responded.)
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I'm seeing the same behaviour as Kim Fenolio described above.
I've unfollowed from both "my friends" and from their profile pages. When I reactivate a user's timeline, the user's plurks will appear in duplicates on my timeline. When I then deactivate a user's timeline, the user's old plurks disappear from my timeline. However as soon as the user plurks again, the new plurk appears on my timeline and I'll need to repeat the cycle.
The strange thing is that I have been successful in switching one particular user's timeline off, and for this user I only get his private plurks.
I doubt the problem is client related, but in case it is I'm using Firefox/2.0.0.15 (Windows).
I’m just trying to help with bug-fixing. It would be a neat feature to have.
-
Inappropriate?I am very frustrated by my time line. I have too many friends to make Plurk useful. I have chosen to only follow about 15 of them on my time line. However, every time I go to the site, I see these folks filling up my time line. I click on their profile and it has the option to follow them, as if I'm not currently doing so.
I click to follow them, then click to unfollow them. I go back to my profile and they are no longer on my time line. However, if I close my browser and then go back to Plurk, guess who's there in my time line? A BUNCH OF PEOPLE WHO I HAVE SET TO NOT FOLLOW ON MY TIME LINE.
It's insane! It's one thing to have no notification service. It's another thing to not allow me to see ONLY MY PLURKS on the mobile client.
But this bug of having so many people show up on my time line even though I spend as much as 5 to 10 minutes cleaning them out by going to their profiles, clicking follow and then clicking unfollow, and only to have these same people show up the next time I log in is just too darn frustrating.
I've tried to read through most of the posts in this thread. But I'm wondering if you folks think that this is a non-issue or not. What's up?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I understand your concerns. I'll share with you an easier way to adjust your friends list as well as how to access yourself on Plurk mobile.
Click on "My Friends" in the upper left of your browser to bring up your friends list. You can click "timeline follow" to OFF and not have to go to individual friend pages. That doesn't fix their glitch though, but makes the long issue of going friend page to friend page a bit easier for you right now.
It is indeed possible to see just your own timeline on Plurk mobile by going to: http://www.plurk.com/m/u/USERNAME
So yours would be http://www.plurk.com/m/u/gspn/
(Tip to remember: in the URL the m=mobile and the u=username) -
Inappropriate?Kim,
Yes, I'm aware of the "My Friends" and the little Red / Gree "follow / unfollow" buttons. However, with 95 friends currently, if I see a person on my timeline that I don't want to be there. I may have to click through to page 8, 9, or 10 to get to the friend that I need to reset the on off switch.
It's easier for me to see someone on my timeline, click username, click follow and then click unfollow.
However, it appears as though this is a fruitless effort until they seem to fix finally fix this bug on this awesome feature idea. Until then, I'll still visit Plurk, but much less frequently. And I'll only read the most recent 5 or so plurks each time. This is a bummer, because some of my good friends, "LIKE YOU KIM," may have plurked before the last 20 or so Plurkers and I might miss out on when you are doing the laundry, fixing dinner, or something else vitally important like that. (slightly joking to lighten up the perceived mood of my posts here).
Really though, I like Plurk, but I'm finding it difficult to LIKE MORE with so much PLURK BACON in my time line.
As for the mobile page for my own timeline. THANK YOU! YOU ROCK!
I’m still slightly frustrated
-
Inappropriate? This is happening to me as well - no amount of fussing with settings or anything makes the plurks stop showing up on my timeline, and this one person makes up so much of the timeline that it overwhelms all the other plurks.
I'm really frustrated.
I’m cross
-
Inappropriate?I've actually got another bug as an extension to this.... if I've unfriended someone, their plurks still show up too... even if I go so far as to block them! :(
I’m annoyed
-
wow, that's really bad :( -
Inappropriate?like jay, i also have removed some friends just because this bug still exists, and now i see one person still in my timeline who is not a friend. STRANGER IN MY TIMELINE. this is ridiculous.
i would agree if they say if i'm not willing to follow them then why add them as friend, but then WHY make a follow/unfollow option on friends? this is about a broken feature!
I’m furious
-
Inappropriate?this bug is affecting me too, and no the plurks are not private nor clique-locked. frustrating.
I’m annoyed
-
Inappropriate? This bug really bugs us as we can't reproduce it.
If someone can mail me (amix at amix.dk) with information on what user you are trying to unfollow (nick name) and a description on what you try (how to reproduce the bug).
I will gladly look into it as it's a frustrating issue for us as well.
Kind regards,
Amir -
thanks! i just emailed you some information. -
I just e-mailed you. Hope it helps. :) -
Inappropriate? With the help of the great community, this bug is now fixed. Thanks for those that emailed me.
In the future: you just unfollow a friend to unfollow this person.
If you have some friends, that are unfollowed, but you still receive plurks from them, then do following: Go to their profile page, follow them and then unfollow them (this will reset the following).
Hope it works this time.

Thank you! I just re-unfollowed any that were still showing up, and so far they're staying off my timeline! (Wish we had the dancing banana on here.) :) -
thank you! plurk rocks! :D -
Inappropriate?I tried to unfollow someone's plurks and it appears to have worked. I did follow, then unfollow. Will update if there's a change. Thanks for fixing this!
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?Amir, This seemed to work since your last comment, but today a plurk from someone I had marked as "unfollow" showed up on my timeline. I went back in the timeline and found one other plurk from here, but she doesnt' post very often so I don't know if this just started or has been going on for awhile. I marked her "follow" then "unfollow" again, and it looks like her plurks disappeared from my timeline. I have a few other friends who are marked "unfollow" and I'm pretty sure they don't show up on the timeline.
I can send you an email listing the plurkers I've unfollowed, if that helps.
I’m perplexed
