Is Plurk playing favorites?
I'd like to know why everybody didn't suffer the same karma loss while Plurk was down 2007/07/18? and how did some Plurks actually GAIN karma?

Inappropriate?I think the reason I gained overnight is that between the last update and teh start of the downtime, I had someone accept a friend invitation and I had an active thread going on.
But I don't understand why ANYONE lost karma during the down time.
-
If you "created" a new plurkr as opposed to simply becoming a friend of an already-existing plurkr, that might account for some. Where in any of the Plurk documentation did you read anything about "an active thread"? -
Responses to conversations give karma benies. That was what I meant. When I said goodnight last night, the conversation went on a for a bit. -
Inappropriate?I noticed that many of my friends who claimed they lost karma had not been active the night before the maintenance outage. I would have expected them to lose karma, and they did.
I highly doubt Plurk is playing favorites. I think karma is all based on algorithms that can appear to favor one user over another, but in fact are completely neutral.
Do the algorithms need to be tweaked? Perhaps. I'm sure the Plurk team is constantly evaluating them, but your feedback is important too.
I’m unconcerned as I don't think Plurk is playing favorites.

i can only plurk when im at home. i got no wi-fi handphone to plurk. and due to all this my karma is deducted. and i plurk 3 plurks. it goes up then the next update in few hrs, i cant plurk as im working, and karma is deducted again. -
It doesn't sound to me that you've done enough investigation to know if you should be concerned or not. Instead of relying on what your friends tell you, I suggest that you copy the karma_trends data into your own spreadsheet and crunch it a bit. And instead of something vague like "the night before" I suggest that you refer to specific 4-hour increments (which is what Plurk uses). Bottom line... I'd prefer to hear from the A-Team because nobody else can do more than make guesses. -
I won't do that much "investigation" because personally I don't care. Plurk karma is meant to be fun- nothing more. I refuse to get my panties in a bunch over it. If I gain karma, great. If I lose some, oh well! I must have had better things to do than Plurk.
People, let's get some perspective on this ok? It's not like Plurk karma is going to cure your cancer or make you filthy rich. Try relaxing and stepping away from the computer for a bit. -
Inappropriate?Who cares about Karma. I'm more irritated about having to refresh the page all the time to get rid of marked responses. Also I'm VERY irritated about the fact that my muted conversations won't stay muted.
That's a Plurk deal-breaker to me and I'll go back to endure Twitter. It's easier to let the crap just flow by than having to deal with it by continuous muting or risk missing good responses. I suppose I could unfollow a lot of people too. grr.

Even though I care about the other issues that you've raised, I care about karma as well. If you don't, then I suggest that you just ignore this thread. -
Inappropriate?I gained like .03 karma, but i think that was from before the down time started.
As for muted threads not staying muted, I have that problem as well. It's getting annoying already.

I can't comment.on changes to your karma because apparently you haven't friended karma_trends. I you have and I've simply missed your name, let me know. -
Inappropriate?Yep, it's quite annoying. Maybe it's time to rethink the Karma algorithm.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Karma is just a way to get you hooked. I will donate all my Karma to anyone who wants it.
-
It doesn't matter if you think it's silly or not. What are important, are concepts like transparency and due process. If Plurk can't be trusted about this, can they be trusted about anything? -
Yes! How can we trust Plurk? After all, our lives all depend on Plurk karma!!! Wait. What? What do you mean they don't? -
Inappropriate?I didn't lose karma( I think mine may have went up a teeny bit)
- but, I know a BUNCH did. I kind of agree with Scott-O-rama, the friends that lost karma weren't really active there JUST before the outage
- and then lost- probably more than they should have, because of it.
---and yeah, it's VERY glitchy for me right now :(. I am having to refresh over and over.. and not seeing new plurks, thats much more irksome than the karma issue -
A "teeny" bit? How much is a "bunch"? How does "just before the outage" matter when karma is calculated on defined 4-hour increments? "Probably more"? Like Scott, I think you're just tossing out wild speculation. -
Inappropriate? The A-Team have given us all an extra 1.00 Karma for all the trouble today, I'm quite happy with that
I’m happy
-
I've looked at all the karma-trends data and would like to know where you get your "extra 1.00 karma" from? What specific 4-hour increments are you basing your figure on? -
Greg,
The Plurk team posted about it here: http://blog.plurk.com/2008/07/19/what-the-plurk/
You can also see it quite visibly on Ryan Lim's graphs (http://plurk.ryanlim.com/graph.php?nick_name[]=Peppery) -
You are completely ignoring the fact that many peeps lost karma in the previous increment while some other peeps who somehow managed to reconnect with Plurk before the end of that increment gained karma ... did they undo that? ... no, they didn't, so an across-the-board increase in the subsequent increment is nothing but "smoke and mirrors" ... the net gain for many was considerably less than for others -
So you're suggesting that users that were active on the site for the hour~ before the increment should have the karma from their activities revoked just because a few users are disgruntled because they weren't aware that Plurk was back online? I'll agree with you on the point that it's unfair to those who lost karma, but what are they to do about it? Keep the site offline for another hour? I don't think there is a perfect solution to this problem, but at least the +1k is better than nothing. -
I lost Karma due to Plurk buying new shoes, I was online before the next Karma update but didn't post a new plurk as I was catching up on those I had missed overnight, so I then lost more Karma. I am still satisfied with their resolution of the situation, sorry to hear that you are not. I am not "completely ignoring" any facts, just not so obsessed with Karma, I'm too busy having fun :-D -
No way? They did that then? I never got mine. :( -
Inappropriate?favoritism from a computer program? panties in a bunch? I think there are more pressing things to worry about in the world than plurk karma.
I’m amused at the way people think.
-
Inappropriate?Karma is an abstraction and a distraction. Since Plurk is brand new there will be glitches that might appear "unfair" to some. I could care less whether the makers of Plurk are open and honest. They are not my bank. I'm not going to marry it or even become Plurk's Uncle. Transparency for designers of non opensource
I’m even tempered
