Adding social networks is broken
I will not give you the password to some of my most important websites like Facebook and LinkedIn. Especially not when these services provide API's that lets you authenticate me without giving up my password. What exactly will giving you my Facebook password do? There is no information about this, just a request for the password to my life. No thanks.

Inappropriate?Hi there!
We're sorry this step in the registration process is not to your liking.. we're currently working on an improvement using Facebook Connect. In the meantime, I can explain why we ask for your password, which we do not store: It is simply to validate that you are truly who you claim to be on Facebook, to ensure proper data security with regards to your account. We don't use your password in any other way that to validate your identity.
Stay tuned, we are improving the website weekly thanks to feedback from users like yourself.
Cheers,
Stéphane

Inappropriate?I have always understood that networks were automaticaly connected!
Shaking hands would result in a new contact on Facebook / Hyves / LinkedIn without any human intervention, like inviting people / granting access. That's why the social networks were not on the blog url page (e.g. http://www.linkedin.com/in/jillesdotcom link)
As I now understand; it's just a simple businesscard in an electronic way. Where you enter your userid/password to validate your realness (That you are really you)
That feels like a major disapointment to my customers, since automaticly connecting networks seemed like a USP.
Are there any plans in the future to apply this method / technology ?
Regards,
Jilles
I’m disapointed
-
Inappropriate?Actually Jilles wrote it perfectly right. I'm disappointed for the very same reason.
Technically it's possible (using the API's of all Social Networks) to connect on every network by just approving a contact on Doyoupoken.com. That was what I was expecting to get, when I bought my Poken. But now it's just a digital businesscard, with links to (not even all) my social network sites.
It could work so nice, but now I think my Poken will end up lying in my drawer, and that's a pity because it could work like a charm! Hopefully you'll use the api's and open social technologies provided to build something that really works.
Cheers,
Bram
I’m disapointed
-
Inappropriate?I totally agree with Bram & Jilles. You should be connected instantly on the networks shared and not by manual clicking on the networks in someone's businesscard. This would enable the true value of Poken, connecting in real life is connecting instantly online!
Kind regards,
Kees
I’m disappointed
-
Inappropriate?Hi Stéphane,
Don't get me wrong. I really think the Poken is a great product. And I'll keep promoting it. But I was just as confused as my customers when I found out the networks did not really connect. I am very satisfied with our communication and the speed you solve and straighten things out. Placing this on 'the roadmap' would definitely ease the tension.
I talked to Corne about it and he told me that one might want to select to which network you want to allow your contact access too. Eg private (Hyves, Facebook) professional (LinkedIn). In my opinion you should best separate this with different poken's per Identity if you want to select this.
My motto: "Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do."
Kind regards,
Jilles Groenendijk
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?Dear Jilles, Bram, Kees,
We're really sorry to hear about your disappointment with some features of poken. I'm hoping it's not our communication that confused you.
We are making every effort to integrate as many features the social networks will allow us to integrate and which improve the user experience. At the moment, there are no social networks that allow third-parties to "add friends" directly, even with their APIs. Bram, if you know of some API that does this, please let us know and we'll send you a free box of pokens! We've poured over many social network's APIs and spoken to several, and it's generally not an openly available feature.
HOWEVER, fear not. This kind of functionality is absolutely in our plans, and we're working on parnterships with several networks to make it possible to do more of your "friend administration" through poken. We'll be releasing some great news in that respect in around 6 weeks, which will have more impact on Swiss users that Dutch, but I'm confident we'll also make you all happy in the very near future.
Stay tuned, and please bear with us as we're still in "Beta". We are confident that the overall product will make you happy as soon as we've ironed out a few of the early-stage issues.
Best Regards, or as we say "Peace Out!",
Stéphane -
Inappropriate?Dear Stéphane,
It might have been my own expectations that just were to high. So no harm done there. It was just a big disappointment that Poken didn't do, what I thought it would do. I totally understand you're still in Beta, and I'm very glad that the functionalities we're missing are scheduled in the roadmap towards the final product.
I really thought the most API's nowadays supported adding contacts already, but I think that assumption must have been wrong as well. A lot work for them there as well then ;-)
Don't get me wrong, I was very enthousiastic about the things I thought it could do. So if Poken wíll be able to do this stuff in the future, I think it could become very big.
So I'm looking forward to your updates and improvements!
Peace out!
Bram
I’m confident

Inappropriate?Hi,
I'm pretty sure there's no API of the current Poken networks for this issue, since we've been looking for this in the past. e.g. on last.fm (not (yet) supported) the only things you can add are tags to songs/artists or albums to your library.
I think it'd be pretty hard to get such an API running smoothly since it'd be a very high security risk. -
Inappropriate?I don't see the security-risk, as long as the user stays in control. A user can grant a website access to their profile, and only gives those websites permission that he or she trusts. The user can cancel the access after abuse, but also the social network can.
I can add people to twitter using other apps than twitter. So the Twitter API supports adding friends/followers. Did I just earn myself a box of free Pokens? ;-)
Without joking; I don't think think in risks. I think in solutions, and for all the risks I can imagine, there can be found a possible solution.
Stay positive, keep looking forward and innovate!
Bram
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate? When there's abuse, it's already too late I think. If it was safe enough, there would be API's for this matter so I'm sure we're not at the point of opening the doors of the databases for this yet.
It's true Twitter has an 'add friend'/follow API, I think this is it: http://apiwiki.twitter.com/REST+API+D...
(i'd like to see Twitter support on Poken too btw)
And of course Bram, always stay positive. I wish everybody did ;-) And as we say in The Netherlands: Stilstaan is achteruitgaan!
Cheers Erik
ps. Did I hear free Pokens? ;-)
-
Inappropriate?Ok, just tried the Dutch 'Hello my name is E', and they díd connect me and my contact on all the connected networks (Youtube, Brightkite and Twitter) just by one click (approve). They also support Picnic and Soocial, but my contact didn't use them, so we didn't connect on those networks. Last.FM, Delicious and Netlog will be supported soon.
So there are API's around (or coming up) providing this functionality!
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Hi Bram,
You are right, there is this possibility for these applications, (Youtube, Brightkite and Twitter): Unfortunately we haven't implemented any of those yet! We'll keep you posted when they're added to the Poken list.
Cheers,
Stéphane -
Inappropriate?True I see in the API list of Brightkite:
http://groups.google.com/group/bright... (on 50% of the page)
(can't find the YouTube one atm)
My Name Is E also works with Facebook, Hyves and LinkedIn like Poken does at the moment. Are these networks also connected instantly? -
Inappropriate?Hello My Name Is E does nót support Facebook, Hyves and LinkedIn Erik.
Not even in the list 'supported soon'.
But good news Stéphane. I hope you will add new and more networks soon.
Cheers,
Bram -
Inappropriate?Yeah, that's the future product maybe. But they are also in beta. Private beta even. So not everything is supported yet.
But let's not make this a slowchat, and keep this about Poken. -
Inappropriate?I heard about the meetup tomorrow from Jilles. I'm very exited, and I'll be there!
Thanks a lot in advance Stéphane!
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?i am marking this thread as closed, as adding your social networks to your poken card is working through OAuth now
I’m happy
