Merging People I tagged
I identified somebody in a picture, entered their name, and pressed enter by accident, setting up a new identity unconnected to the facebook id of that person. Later I added another photo to their facebook identity. I'd like to merge that photo back in.

Alright, at long last we managed to squash this bug.
Merging of people now works as advertised (tried it myself just now)!
So, go forth and merge the **** out of those contacts!

This is supposed to be possible, but we have a bug in there at the moment.
The bug will be fixed this week and then this should work as expected.
Basically, you go to the people tab, find one of the two contacts and click the "edit details" link. You should now be able to change the name. Type the same name again, but make sure it auto-completes to the OTHER contact.
It will now ask you if you are sure you want to merge the two.
Keep on eye on our blog (http://blog.polarrose.com) for news on the release, or just try again towards the end of the week.
Sorry for the confusion in the meantime!

Inappropriate? The easiest way at this moment is to remove the name and add it again with the proper facebook identity.
Hover over the photo in question and click on the "edit tags" that lights up. You can then click the cross behind the name in question to remove it.
Who can remove a name?
1. The person that named
2. The person that was named
3. The owner of the photo (person who uploaded it).
Also in the "edit tags" modal is the ability to manually draw a box. This resize the one provided and then click "proceed". Don't click proceed unless you want to name the box you made though. No need to click proceed after deleting a name. Click the "close" button (X) instead.

This solution still works, but the one above is better in most cases. -
Inappropriate?Actually there is an even better way, which I almost forgot!
Find the offending identity on the people page (its sorted alphabetically), hover over it and click "Edit details". Here you can simply change the identity to another one, including Facebook contacts.
This also works when you for example tagged somebody with "just a name" first and did not provide an email address. If you want to add an email address later on, you just go and click "Edit details" on the People page and add the email address right there.
I’m forgetful
-
I really wish this worked. If I could "edit" the facebook people, I could save a great deal of time fixing the people forced to facebook identities. As it is, the facebook people don't offer edits in the people page. -
Inappropriate?I have a few photos that are tagged with my name, but not with my Facebook identity. When I follow your suggestion and edit the details, it does not seem to work and the pictures still are tagged with my name but not my Facebook ID, so there are two "people" with my name. I have tried this with my brother's orphaned pictures as well, and it doesn't work for that identity either.
Never mind! It just took a while to take effect. I would have appreciated a status message, or some other indication that my actions had some effect.
I’m thankful

Inappropriate? This has been improved in the latest update. The method I described should correctly merge things now.
-
Looking at the problem again. Can you tell me if the people you are trying to merge have email addresses or not? Any idea why they got "split" in the first place from your point of view? -
Inappropriate?I am still having this problem. Some of my friends have 3 "people" in PolarRose. This is particularly a problem with a friend who I started following before they joined Facebook. Now that they've joined Facebook they have another "person" in PolarRose that I can't seem to merge with the first one. (There is another "person" for him that I created accidentally the way Oliver did.)
I’m sad
-
Mmm this really ought to work. Do any of these people have email addresses attached to them by any chance? -
Inappropriate? They do not have email addresses or facebook accounts.
I know exactly why they got split.
As I am entering them it asked me who this is. I type in the persons name (John Doh), I go through the selection process and complete it.
Then it asks me who this is with the same person (John Doh). I enter in the persons name again (because it doesn't offer the name as a selection) and it seems to create another person (another John Doh).
I do this over and over again, and end up with several groups with the same name.
I realized I have to exit out of the "who is this" screen when I enter somebody new.
Basically it doesn't seem to update from the database after it has been updated with a new name.
I hope this makes sense. It took me a long time to merge them by deleting them yesterday. 60 pictures 1 by 1 with the edit tags system was a lot of work. Slow going.
-
Hey Zac,
Thanks for the detailed description. This really shouldn't happen. It should offer the name as a selection right away.
So you are now removing the names and then adding them again?
Please don't...we are actively looking at this problem and should have a fix shortly!
My apologies again for all the trouble... -
Inappropriate?Hmm, I'm having a similar problem. I've been tagging away and find that I have 8 different entries for a single person (my son, who is 8 years old and of course has neither an e-mail address nor a facebook account). I'm not sure how that happened, but I'm finding it impossible to fix. I tried "editing" seven of the groups and, for each, changing them to a common entry, but when I refresh the "people" tab, nothing has changed: I still have 82 entries spread out among eight different identical names.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? We are currently testing a fix for the merging. It should be out as part of the next release, hopefully some time this week!
Separately from that we're looking in to what is causing people to end up with split identities in the first place.

Inappropriate? Is it possible to merge two Polar Rose contacts who are really the same person? Specifically two contacts that are NOT actual Facebook contacts but just Polar Rose names tagged to photos of people not on Facebook...
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Is it possible to merge two contacts if they are in fact the same person?.
I’m curious and perplexed

Inappropriate? It works for me. Sometimes it takes some time to do it, which is unnerving (you can still click on the icon for the merged contact, and get an error message).
I’m amused
-
Yeah, this is a pretty big and expensive operation for us to do. Pretty hard to do in "realtime" therefore... -
Inappropriate?Hi,
I still seem to be having this problem. I have several instances of the same contact with all the same details (just a name). I have successfully merged previous duplicates but that process does not seem to work if the duplicates have the same name initially so there is no change needed to their details.
I will try to force it by adding a new character to the end of the names & report back.
Chris -
Inappropriate?Doh! It's worse - I now have a contact with an extra 'a' on the end of their name. Fine so far but when I changed the next copy to also have an 'a' it tried to merge but got me an error 500.
Ideas?
Does it just need time for the changes to propogate through?
Chris -
Hi Chris,
Sorry about the problems you are having.
You might well be right about it taking some time to propagate. Not so much the merge itself, but the initial contact with the extra "a".
Could you possibly try logging out and back in again, give it 5 minutes and try merging again?
Sorry for the hassle. Should that not work, please email me (see http://info.polarrose.com/contact for my email address) with your user ID (the number in the URL, for example when you look at the photos of yourself). Then we can check what specifically is going wrong.
Thanks again, and sorry for the mess.
-Thijs.
