Background indexing
I just tried to index my mail. It took a while. Seems like this should be done as a background process instead of shutting down the email.

Inappropriate? We actually index in the background when you are away from your computer automatically so you don't have to do a manual index and wait for it to complete.
-
Inappropriate? If you add a new folder or new account and choose to manually index, is it possible for that process to be in the background. For example I just ran a search for the first time and was told that the results would be incomplete and was asked if I wanted all mail to be indexed. I selected to do this, and now I'm prevented from performing any tasks within Postbox until either 9000 more messages are indexed or I stop the indexing process. It seems like I should be able to go onto another tab and view my existing or new mail while the indexing is taking place especially if that's done normally...

Background indexing starts when your machine goes idle and stops when it ceases to be idle. I assume they're blocking the UI on manual indexing for a reason. -
Inappropriate?I agree. The fact that Postbox effectively becomes unusable during the indexing process is frustrating. Mail.app handles this much better. Just let the index process keep happening, but don't shut me out from even sending a new message.
Some kind of "Activity" monitor would be very nice (again, like Mail) to keep an eye on the process while keeping it mostly out of the way.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Ben, if you want to use the app why not just let Postbox automatically index on idle instead of going through the dialog? That way you aren't blocked at all and you don't don't have to do any manual work either.
Just thinking out loud. Thanks again for trying Postbox. -
I could do that, but since I'm new to Postbox and it asked me if I wanted to index, I just said "yes". It's great that it can index in the background. It just seems unintuitive to ask the user if they'd like to perform the index and then make them wait for 20 minutes while it happens. If Postbox is fundamentally capable of background indexing (which it sounds like it is), it seems like it would be nicer to users to just do it that way.
Thanks for the reply, Scott! -
That's true. We put the UI in there in case you start up Postbox for the first time, and immediately test out the search capabilities and don't find any matches. That UI gives you a hook to force indexing right now instead of waiting so you can find your search results. We try to explain that to users here: http://postbox-inc.com/quickstart#start
but maybe there are some better in product ways we can do to accomplish that to. Thanks again for your feedback. Very helpful! -
Inappropriate?I would really love to see Postbox acting as below:
1. Start indexing
2. Postbox displays current message and gives the user a button that would kick that window to background and continue the process. Similar to how Eclipse does.
3. At any point of time I can click on the activity (in status bar) that would show details on what's happening...
I’m thankful

this is one of the best points

Inappropriate?By the way, just now I had a lunch break for almost 1 hour and once I was back in the office I did few searches and postbox was asking me to index.
1. Indexing (full reset and index all mails) was done this morning
2. What happened to 1 hour of inactivity while I was away for my lunch (of course there were some background activities: torrents, etc)?
3. Why would it index again and again on different (from: abc versus from: xyz) searches?
