Editing drafts displays HTML code
If I save a draft and then go back to continue writing/editing it, I am presented with HTML code. I only send plain text mail.
Here is an example of what I see after double-clicking a draft to edit it:

Inappropriate? We're working on this and should have a fix in the next update. Thanks for the report Jeff!
-
Inappropriate?I am still seeing this problem in b7. Actually, I'm quite surprised that no one else has run into this problem. No one ever saves a draft and comes back to edit it later? Or is everyone else sending HTML mail? (That would be depressing.)
-
Inappropriate?heh, we weren't able to fix this in time for b7 but it's still on our radar. It's a tricky one!
-
That's fine. Since I am only composing plain text emails, it's strange to me why HTML should ever enter into the picture, even behind-the-scenes. The message previewer is able to show me the plain text without a problem, so it's odd that opening the message for editing doesn't do the same thing. -
Inappropriate?I am still seeing this problem in b8. In fact, a draft which I saved in Alpine displays normally in Postbox's message preview pane, but comes up completely blank when I try to edit it. Drafts saved in Postbox still display HTML code.
-
Inappropriate?I just updated to b9- issue still exists (not that is was planned to be fixed, but figured I'd save Jeff the trouble of an update :) )
-
Heh. Thanks, Chris! -
Inappropriate?I just tested this on Windows b9. I composed a new message ... I had a line full of bold text and another line full of italics. Then, I saved it as Draft and closed the message.
I went back to the Draft folder and opened it to full windows and I still see my bolded line and italicized line.
Then, I edited this same message in Draft by adding another line and set text color to red. Saved as Draft again and closed it.
I clicked back to Inbox then I clicked Draft. I opened the draft message and it showed bold, italicized and red lines.
No HTML codes showed up.
Do you mean this happens AFTER it has been sent? -
The difference is that you're composing HTML mail, which (sadly, in my opinion) Postbox defaults to. Switch to plain text and try it again. -
There should be an option to switch to plain text from the compose window :-/
HTML email, despite me fighting it for years, has become the norm and i've just accepted it. Gotta pick your battles, and the alternative to HTML email for providing rich content in email is XML, which isn't going to catch on any time soon.
As sad as that makes me :-( -
I just switched to text mode and I still am not getting HTML code in the draft message. It's still text. <confused></confused> -
@Curtis: Maybe it's a Mac-only bug? I don't know.
@mbond: It's not that I'm anti-HTML mail per se. I just see no reason that it should be the default in any mail client when plain text is sufficient the vast majority of the time. -
@ Curtis- just to be 100% clear on the use case scenario (at least *my* usecase scenario) is to uncheck the "Compose message in HTML format" setting in Account Settings, start a new message (a non-html message) and then save as draft. Then I go into my Drafts folder and when I attempt to edit the message, I get all sorts of HTML markup (similar to Jeff's screenshot in the original problem statement).
It's pretty wild if you're doing the same thing and getting a different result (but stranger things have happened!)
Oh, @jeff: I'm running this on WinXP SP3 so I don't think its Mac-only :) -
I'm doing the same thing as Chris. -
I now confirm this issue. The issue is applicable only to unchecking the "Compose message in HTML format" in Account Settings. This is not the same as switching from HTML to text during a message. Consider this a bug but I doubt it'll do me any good since I no longer write plain text messages anymore! :) -
Inappropriate?Same problem when choosing "Resend..." of a plaintext message.
-
Inappropriate? So if you UNCHECK the option to compose in HTML (that is, compose in plain text), save a draft and then try to edit it, you get the HTML markup stuff.
But if you CHECK the option to compose in HTML, save a draft and then try to edit it, you do NOT get the HTML markup stuff.
Weird... -
Inappropriate?I still get this in beta 14 on Windows XP SP3. I prefer to only send email in text, so I have HTML format unchecked in Account settings. When I right-click any html message to Resend, it appears as it should. But when I right-click any text message to Resend, it shows some HTML formatting. Opening a message in the Drafts folder seems just to be a special case of this behaviour -- opening a draft is exactly like using Resend in any other folder.
Will this be fixed in a future beta? -
Inappropriate? This problem still exists in beta 15.
-
Inappropriate? The fact that this has persisted into a putative 1.0, such that large parts of the application are still totally unusable for me, is somewhat troubling.
I’m annoyed
-
Inappropriate?I still get this problem too. It would be really nice to have it fixed, because currently the save draft functionality is unusable for me.
I’m a bit cheesed off
-
Inappropriate? This is still a problem, a fairly obvious one at that. I hit upon it daily and while I will quite happily tolerate it on an open-source project, for a piece of software that i have now chosen to support with the Yankee dollar, I none too happy that this has been reported 8 months ago and still not fixed.
Come on chaps -- no excuse
I’m concerned
-
Inappropriate?I've also seen this problem for quite some time.
It occurs in Templates and Drafts created/sent in plain text.
I’m wondering
-
Inappropriate? This issue has been annoying me for some time now and it frustrates me to find that it was reported some 9 months ago and is still not fixed.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Same problem here. And only noticed after I paid the 30 bucks, grrr.
As much as I like postbox - not being able to save drafts is a showstopper.
Back to thunderbird until this is fixed. It's a bit embarassing to see such a critical bug go unfixed for almost a year...
I’m not amused
-
2 people say
this solves the problem
-
Yep, seems fine now - well done guys. -
Inappropriate?Just tried version 1.1 and the problem seems to be gone.
Awesome, thank you!
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?cool!
