Problems copying message to sent folder
Sometimes when I send I get this message:
"There was an error copying the message to the Sent folder. Retry?"
If I retry, does the message get sent again. Or was it sent successfully the first time. I've never seen this message in other clients, so I think it's a beta issue. If there's something I can do to remedy, just let me know.

Inappropriate?Chris,
At that point the message has been sent. if you select retry, we'll just be re-trying to put a copy in your sent folder. -
Inappropriate?OK. But when I get the message it never successfully completes the copy into the "Sent" folder. It seems to happen with messages that have attachments, but I'll keep my eye on it.
Thanks.
I’m undecided
-
Inappropriate? This has happened to me 3-4 times, too. I think in each case, the message had an attachment. The most recent one was when I did a "Forward as attachment". The message was sent but no matter how many times I retried, it refused to be copied to the Sent folder.
-
Inappropriate? This just happened to me again. The message had a single jpeg attachment. I'm using a single IMAP (Cyrus) account with Postbox b5 on OS X 10.5.6. The message was sent, but refused to be copied to the Sent folder, meaning I no longer have my copy of that message.
I’m slightly annoyed.
-
Inappropriate?jeff, can you send me an imap log of the transaction?
https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Log...
for IMAP
and then send scott@postbox-inc.com the log the next time it happens. Thanks! -
Inappropriate? This happens constantly for me, as well, every three or four emails. "There was an error copying the message to the Sent folder. Retry?"
-
Inappropriate?I'm a new user and I'm getting this on EVERY message I try to send, although message IS actually sent, obviously I have no record.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? This hit's me as well, everytime i send an email with an attachement! It's frustrationg it's the only thing which annoys me tremendios with this otherwise good mailclient.
what's also missing is a german translation for my aging father, but that's another thing!
I’m really frustrated!
-
Inappropriate?i sent in a logfile of the imap connection with a brief description on the mentioned email address ...
hope this helps ...
best
I’m annoyed ...
-
Inappropriate?thanks for sending the log rsacherer.
-
Inappropriate?I have this problem as well: When I send emails with attachments over a certain size (a few hundred KBs), Postbox always tells me it failed to copy them to "Sent" folder on the server (but sent it anyway). This is annoying because I have to keep track of the stuff I send out. Any remedies?
Thank you,
Sebastian

-
Inappropriate?this happens constantly as well. Contact me if you want log files etc.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I'm having this issue, too. I can replicate it reliably by adding an attachment (Excel file, in this case) and pasting an image inline in the message (a graph copied from Excel).
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I've played around with various attachments. I can only replicate the problem with an inline image *and* an attachment that is above a critical size: If I attach a 150 kB Excel file it is fine. If I attach a 500 kB Excel file I get the error.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? For those of you running into this error while sending on the Mac we believe we've fixed this error in the new beta update.
Thanks for all the info, it really helped us track this one down! -
Inappropriate?I'm getting the same problem - a few days *before* installing the beta, *all* messages suddenly refused to copy to send, and in fact I can't move *any* messages to any folders anymore. It's not an IMAP server thing as it's happening with four different IMAP servers, including Gmail. I thought b8 would fix it, but it hasn't. Any ideas?
This is on MacOS 10.5. On my 10.4 machine, with the *same* servers, Postbox works fine!
I’m frustrated
-
Thomas can you go to your sent folder and right click no the folder name then choose Properties and Rebuild index. I wonder if that unsticks your sent folder? -
Inappropriate?Yes! Just installed b8 (for Windows) and it has fixed the problem for me. I recreated the above emails that caused problems and no longer get the error message.
Thanks!
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?Scott:
These are the messages I see. I uninstalled b7 because of this issue. I waited until b8 and reinstalled. It still has this issue.
marc.

I’m frustrated
-
this is on the Mac OS X version with b8 -
Marc, can you send me an IMAP log that caputres this transaction?
Send the log and a link back to this thread to scott @ postbox-inc.com
Thanks!
1) open up a terminal window
2) type in the following two lines:
export NSPR_LOG_FILE=~/Desktop/imaplog.txt
export NSPR_LOG_MODULES=IMAP:4
3) Assuming you dragged the Postbox app to your applications folder, type the following into the terminal window:
./Applications/Postbox.app/Contents/MacOS/postbox-bin -
Inappropriate?Scott:
I downloaded the Thunderbird 3 nightly build and used the same configuration for the folders and it doesn't have any issues with saving copies of sent mail in the same folders.
However, I really --hate- the way threads work and miss the search and Facebook integration features.
marc.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Luis, are you using an exchange server too?
I'm close to having this one fixed and believe we should have something in the next update. -
Yes, I am -
Inappropriate?Hi,
I'm still getting this problem in beta 10.
I'm using an exchange server and am finding that it only fails to save the message as a draft or to the sent mail when I'm replying to an email.
If I create a new one from scratch then its fine.
A> -
Inappropriate?Andrew, does the message you are sending have any topics applied to it in the compose window?
If so, I believe we have a fix for that which will be in the next update.

this solves the problem
-
Yes. That fixed the saving issue. Cheers :D
ps. sorry for taking a few days to reply; easter weekend kept me away from the email account i could check it out on. -
Inappropriate?I'm also having this problem in beta10.
I'm not on an exchange server and the message fails to save when replying to an existing message, creating a new message or trying to save a draft.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? We've prepared a test build that has this fix in it if folks want to try it out and report back here:
http://getsatisfaction.com/postbox/to...
Thanks! -
Inappropriate?fixed in BETA 11 which is now out: http://getsatisfaction.com/postbox/to...
-
Inappropriate?I seem to be having this issue still, with the new beta, and I am using an AOL account and get the error unable to copy to sent folder, yet it is in my AOL Sent folder. It just doesn't go the other sent folder, which I don't need it to do that anyway.
I’m sad! LOL
-
Inappropriate?I am getting a number of reports form Mac users who just upgraded to b11 that they are getting this error. No problem under b10. I updated their server settings for Inbox in an attempt to stem this issue. Waiting to hear if it helped. Might also be a server (Linux) issue.
-
I am using the Windows client. -
Inappropriate?I am having this issue as well; all I'm doing is sending a test message (no attachments) from an IMAP account linked to my work's Exchange server. I've deleted the IMAP account/re-entered it in several times, still doesn't work.
This is on a Mac running 10.5.6 and Postbox version 1.0b11 (2009041623).
I'm able to successfully connect to Exchange via Mail.app, Entourage on a Mac; Windows Live Mail, and Outlook on a PC. Just Postbox on a Mac is having this issue.
I’m frustrated.
-
Inappropriate? What error message are you getting BearsFan34?
-
Inappropriate?

That's what I get when I attempt to send from an IMAP account linked to my Exchange server where I work; I'm not using SSL or Kerberos or anything.
Clicking "Ok" gives me the same message over & over.
When I click cancel, I get the following:

The message DOES get delivered just fine...but I still get the above screens each and every time I send.
Attempting to change the folder that Sent items are saved to makes no difference.
I have a MobileMe account and a Hotmail account working flawlessly in Postbox at the same time.
EDIT: Thought I'd add a screen shot of what I'm running too, in case that helps...
-
Inappropriate?Hi Michael, if this happens every time for you, feel free to generate an IMAP protoocol log which captures the communciation with your exchange server when copying the message to your sent folder.
You can send the log to support@postbox-inc.com with a link to this get satisfaction report. Thanks!
http://getsatisfaction.com/postbox/to... -
Inappropriate?Scott,
I'm having this same problem. I emailed an IMAP protocol log to the address above.
I’m indifferent
-
Inappropriate?I too am having this problem. I just installed Postbox on my Mac and the first email I sent gave me this error. I'm using version 1.0b13 (2009062916) and connecting to Gmail using IMAP.
-
Inappropriate?I am back to using Mail.app with Mailtags and Mail Acton for a while at least.
-
Inappropriate?I have this problem, too - without attachments, with small emails, and in Windows Vista. It just started happening after several months of use.
-
Inappropriate?I am still having a problem getting messages copied to the "sent" folder, even though the company has marked this problem as "resolved." I'm using version b14 and Windows 64-bit Vista.
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Messages still not copying to "sent" folder.
I’m frustrated
-
Richard, we've re-tagged the topic from "resolved" to "the company has acknowledged this problem". -
Inappropriate?Same here. Running b14 on win7 x64, IMAP on exchange2003.
I would LOVE to move to this mail reader from Outlook :(
Thanks guys -
Inappropriate?Ok I don't know how elegant this solution is.. but at least it keeps a copy of sent mail while the BUG is still being fixed:
1) right-click (I'm on a PC) on the "Sent" folder and choose "New Subfolder..." and type a name for it. I just chose "postbox"
2) go to Tools>Account settings. On the left choose "Copies & Folders" option for Your IMAP mail account that has the trouble. Switch radio button from ""Sent" folder on.." to "Other:" and navigate to the "Sent>Postbox" subfolder just created.
The result I got is that the stamp-like icon for "sent" folder changes its name to "Postbox" and WORKS as a folder for sent items.
when the problem gets fixed, all You'd have to do is switch back account settings to the original "Sent" folder and move all the gathered items up one level.
This is interesting, btw. Why does it work if a subfolder is used? :)
hope this helps
cheers
Kristaps -
that doesn't make sense to me that a sub folder of your sent folder works. How many messages are in your actual sent messages folder (not the sub folder). Could we be timing out waiting to update that folder? -
didn't make much sense to me either. And no, there were no messages at all. After using a sub-folder for some time, I took a look at it again: First, i set it back to "Sent" folder (explicitly, not with the "Sent folder on <account>" option). Boom! it works. AFTER that I switched to the "Sent folder on <account>" option. Ekkkhm. This now works, too. So for me it helped to switch back and forth to custom IMAP folder, the switchin gback to default. Still doesnt make sens to me, but works....</account></account> -
Inappropriate?I am also having this problem (not getting messages copied to the "sent" folder). I'm using Beta14 and Windows 32-bit Vista. The problem occurs with two different e-mail accounts, although never happened with my Gmail account.
I can send a logfile of the imap connection in case you need it. -
Inappropriate?I only have this problem infrequently, but it's happened every time I send email to one specific person.
I’m unsure
-
Are any of you noticing that postbox is doing an auto save of the message when you go to send it? -
Inappropriate? For starts, check out our beta 15 test build to see if it makes it better Richard (that includes a fix where you could not send if an auto save was in progress).
http://getsatisfaction.com/postbox/to...
For what to look for if that was your problem - you'd see some text in the status bar in the lower left hand corner of the window that would say something about saving to the drafts folder... -
Inappropriate?same problem in beta 15
-
remin, you are now having this problem too? Is the error you see specifically about copying to the sent folder?
If so can you turn on imap logging
http://getsatisfaction.com/postbox/to...
start up postbox, send a message that generates the unable to copy to sent folder error.
quit postbox.
copy that log to the side so it doesn't get replaced when you next...
start up postbox and send the log to support@postbox-inc.com with a link to this topic.
Thanks! -
Inappropriate?Hi Scott,
I installed postbox on a 2nd PC, importing all messages from Thunderbird.
This gave a lot of problems. Unable to copy mail to send / draft folder and a lot of other things (p.e. 2 local folders with same messages)
I decided to change the name of my Local Folders (with the imported messages). I deleted the email accounts in the mail folder.
I deleted prefs.js and recreated all accounts in Postbox.
Then I left postbox. Changed the name back to Local Folders and now everything is ok.
... only one thing... Postbox was indexing email messages of his own and I had difficulty to change the settings. -
Inappropriate?Hi, I appear to be having the same problem -- it has attachments....version 1.0b15 (2009081716)
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I've had this problem since my first beta--about 3 releases back. Since the latest upgrade (b15) it happens more than ever. Almost one of every 3 emails, no attachments. Possibly replies to email lists.
D -
Inappropriate?Assuming the Sent folder is set correctly for the account in Tools / Account Settings / Copies & Folders...
Just a reminder for anyone whose seeing this that we're looking for an imap log that captures the failure:
If so can you turn on imap logging
http://getsatisfaction.com/postbox/to...
start up postbox, send a message that generates the unable to copy to sent folder error.
quit postbox.
copy that log to the side so it doesn't get replaced when you next...
start up postbox and send the log to support@postbox-inc.com with a link to this topic.
Thanks! -
Hey Scott,
I'm having this issue too. I sent you an imap log last night which (hopefully) should help.
Cheers, Justin -
thanks Justin. Will look at it today. -
Inappropriate?I have this problem too - Mac OS-X connecting to Zimbra server via IMAP - just experimenting with PostBox (was going to buy it) but now I am going back to mail.app . . .
I’m resigned
-
Inappropriate?I've been having this problem across multiple versions of Postbox's beta.
It mostly went away for me now. Here is what seemed to be happening:
- I had imported a ton of folders and mail from Tbird
- I hadn't really used Pbox much, I was just sending some test messages
- So the Sent Folder had not been indexed yet -- and was throwing the error
- Once I slowly clicked through each folder including Drafts and Sent, the app built indexes
- And now when I send it's fine
However sometimes I do still see this error when sending. Haven't been able to isolate the root cause/situation
I’m indifferent
-
Inappropriate?Make sure the correct 'Sent' folder is selected in Account Settings -> Copies & Folders.
-
Inappropriate?I have very big problems with sent messages / sent folder; I really like Postbox's features, but - since I need reliable mail client - I will migrate back from Postbox to TB or Apple Mail.
I licensed Postbox, but now will wait for better, more reliable build.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I'm not using IMAP, my sent messages do not have topics attached to them, and my mail was imported from Thunderbird.
I get this error tons of times a day, which is making Postbox usage very painful.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? This whole 'error copying messages to the sent folder' problem is really bugging me. I'm getting messages prompting me to buy Postbox, but as far as I'm concerned, this is a huge bug (obviously experienced by a lot of people) and not something I'd expect for a 1.0 (i.e: non-beta) app.
Once this problem is fixed, Postbox will be become my default mail client, but until then, it just can't compete with Mail.
Are you guys still after a log? If so, let me know and I'll send one to you.
Thanks,
~ Elliot
I’m frustrated
-
That's exactly how I feel - with 12 days left to buy Postbox! If it's fixed, I'll buy it. If not, not.
I can forward an email that causes the problem every time I hit "forward" or "reply" and send something, if that helps. -
Inappropriate?I'm not seing this problem anymore. My "Drafts folder" setting was wrong (pointing to a non-existent Drafts folder under "Local Folders"), and the "Sent folder" was correct.
I also closed Postbox, deleted the Drafts.msf and Sent.msf files, reopened Postbox and opened each of these folders, waiting for them to be reindexed.
Apparently, the problem is solved. But it's a very nasty bug for a commercial 1.0+ application.
I’m unsure
-
Inappropriate?I'm still having this problem. I've done a number of these fixes without any luck.
I can duplicate it every time while responding to certain messages. I can send you one of those messages so you can look for embedded problems, if that helps.
R
I’m pensive
-
Richard, any chance the messages it happens to all the time are marked as To-Do's? If so does not marking them as a to-do in the compose window allow the copy to succeed? -
Inappropriate? This has been happening for me on all my IMAP accounts roughly since moving to 1.0. I literally get the message every time I send a message. Not only is the popup annoying, but my messages are not being saved.
Any progress on this issue?
Thanks!
Jeff
I’m frustrated
-
Jeff, if you see this all the time please send us an IMAP log to support@postbox-inc.com with a link to this get satisfaction topic:
http://getsatisfaction.com/postbox/to...
startup, send a message with a subject like "postbox copy to sent folder test"
get the error. quit postbox. Save the log so it doesn't get overwritten. Then send that log file to us.
Thanks!
-Scott -
Inappropriate? The message does not tell us how to find the log and send it to you. Where is the log?
-
Inappropriate?Hi Richard,
the log should get written out to the path you specified here:
NSPR_LOG_FILE
the example in the link set up the log to be placed on your desktop for mac and windows. Per my note above send the log to support@postbox-inc.com with a link to this get satisfaction topic.
thanks!
-Scott -
Inappropriate?Well, Scott, I'm still struggling with the log file, BUT - at least with the last couple, they WERE marked as to-dos. Unmarking them did allow them to go through.
Not all emails marked as to-do's failed, but of the ones that did, unmarking them fixed it.
What does that tell us? Thanks, Richard
I’m pensive
-
Just FYI, I have this problem sporadically, no rhyme or reason, and I do not mark emails, so none are marked "to do."
Don -
Inappropriate?I have kind of the same problem, except that in my case, the message actually get correctly moved to the "Sent" folder when I click "Cancel" in the "There was an error copying the message to the Sent folder. Retry?" message box.
And the problem only happens when I Reply to a message from a POP account.
I’m sad
-
Hi Remi, does it only happen when you reply to a message marked as a to-do as well? -
Yes, exactly. I just tested it for about 10 todos messages and they all displayed the message box. Replying to regular messages is fine. -
Inappropriate?Remi's issue with replying to to-do's causing an error copying to the sent folder has been fixed in our 1.1 BETA 1 if you would like to try it out.
More info can be found here:
Postbox 1.1 BETA 1

Inappropriate?hi, i have just started getting the same problem on all notes using POP... I am on the latest version having just installed Windows 7
-
Inappropriate?I have the problem with every single email I have sent in mac version 1.10b2. Error copying to both the sent and drafts folder. message was a single image sent as a test.
Also would like to point out the lack of drag and drop of files to the dock icon. Mac mail opens a new message from the primary account with the dropped items attached. I use it most every day. Not huge, but definitely very un-mac-like behavior, imo.
I’m bummed I won't be using Postobox until it gets more solid.
-
Inappropriate?Remi's issue with replying to to-do's causing an error copying to the sent folder has been fixed in Postbox 1.1.
http://postbox-inc.com/?/blog/entry/p...
Thanks!
-Seth -
Inappropriate? But the problem still occurs, as I just had it happen in 1.1. My issue has nothing to do with "to-dos," but I still get the message occasionally. I think it is when I reply to an email rather than create a new one, but I'm not certain about that.
-
Inappropriate? And I just, for the first time ever, had a message refuse to be copied to the sent mail folder. Error kept coming up, hitting retry no help, finally had to cancel. A reply to an email. Maybe this is a connection issue to my IMAP server? 1.1
