Gathered messages aren't sorted chronologically.
After clicking "Gather" on a message, the resulting view (in the style of a thread summary) displays the related messages in no particular order. Please modify this view to respect the mail.conversation_display.reverse setting, and display the messages in whichever chronological direction the user has configured.
A sensible default, however, would be oldest to newest, scrolled to the message the user decided to "gather" from.

Inappropriate?It's hard to produce a screenshot without having to redact most of the contents. Further tests suggest that the gathered messages are sorted, but are not sorted in reverse chronological order, as per my settings. -
