hide message window when sending
sending with the message window still open obscures the main window for too long. it would be much nicer if when sending an email the message window disappeared immediately and the progress bar was incorporated into the main window.

You can choose to hide the progress window that appears when sending a message by using the Config Editor to change the value of the preference mailnews.show_send_progress to false.
And for the mail, you can minimize it without problem. -

Inappropriate?I second this. Having the message window still open plus the progress bar is not good. What it should do is immediately close the email window, place the email in the outbox queue, and use a progress bar integrated to the main window, somewhere along the bottom, the move the message to the sent items once it's done, all in the background so it's not so intrusive and the sender came move on immediately.
