IMAP, Topics, and Syncing
Hi,
I realized that when using IMAP with two or more computers using Postbox, that the topics do not sync automatically. Considering that I have about two dozen topics that I assign to emails, trying to sync topics by hand can get complicated. Is there a way to sync topics already? Or is this something that is not implemented yet? If not, would it be possible to implement such a feature?
Thanks,
Eli

Inappropriate?I second that request - I also use Postbox on two computers with an IMAP server. If I tag and archive emails on one computer, the emails are tag-less on the other computer unless I manually create that tag/topic.
I’m looking for a solution

Inappropriate?I agree--topics aren't much use to me unless I can get them on whatever machine I happen to be working on at the time.
-
Inappropriate?The topics themselves are stored as keywords on the imap server they are stored as part of the message.
We would like to add topic sync across machines so the same set of available topics are available on both machines in the future. Until then you have to add the topic on both computers being sure to spell it exactly the same (case matters too).
Sorry about that but we'll get there!

Thanks for your reply! Since the topics are stored as part of the messages, would an easy (temporary) solution not be that when Postbox indexes messages, it also compiles a list of the topics attached to each message, and automatically makes all these topics available?. That would still mean running 're-index all messages' manually, but might be a quick fix? -
Inappropriate?We first off, it should be stressed that this is something I would personally like to see in the product! We'll get there eventually.
One thing you can do is simply recreate the topics on the second machine exactly as they appear on the first machine.
But sometimes topic names can change and they get out of sync. So currently, I sync topics manually since my topics really don't change all that much. This is dangerous to do unless you know what you're doing, but here's what you can do if you feel comfortable with it:
- On the machine that has the right tag set, navigate to your profile directory and look for a file called "prefs.js" MAKE A BACK UP OF THIS FILE!
- Then open prefs.js within a text editor. Scroll down until you see entries like the following:
user_pref("mailnews.tags.partner.active", true);
user_pref("mailnews.tags.partner.color", "#999900");
user_pref("mailnews.tags.partner.ordinal", "26");
user_pref("mailnews.tags.partner.tag", "Partner");
- If you copy these entries from one prefs.js file from the first machine to the second, then you'll see your topics appear in the second machine.
Again, please be careful when you do this, and make sure to make backup copies!!!
I'm going to mark this in Get Satisfaction as the "best" solution for now so that it is displayed at the top, but obviously we will be exploring ways to make this more seamless in the future. -
Inappropriate?If I assign a topic to a message on an IMAP server using Postbox, accessing the same message on the same IMAP server using a different instance of Postbox (from a different computer) fails to show the topic.
I guess that topic data is kept in a database local to each Postbox installation, but that's not terribly helpful. Shouldn't Postbox be using IMAP flags to store this data?

Not seeing the same topics from multiple Postbox installations.
I’m sad

Inappropriate?I've tested this on a couple of instances of Postbox and it doesn't look like the topics are shared across installs. That's a shame... or am I missing something?

Are topics only assigned locally to messages?.
-
Inappropriate?I like the Topics feature, but they seem to be local to one particular machine. I read my mail from several IMAP servers on several different machines, and the Topics I select for messages on machine A do not show up on machine B.
The forum messages on this topic indicate that it should work if you define he same Topics on each machine, but no luck so far...

Inappropriate?I have postbox on multiple computers. Is there any way to sinc these up? For instance, use topics but I can't see them on the other computers. I have an IMAP server.

Inappropriate?I use NetNewsWire and one of my favorite aspects of it, is the syncing that occurs between machines because it syncs data with their news service NetGator. Is there a way to achieve this with Postbox? I would think that would be a killer syncing tool.
I am particularly interested in collected messages, since there are other ways of syncing address books.

Inappropriate?Topics do sync... I find the best way is to use lower case topics.
When you are first creating your Topics use just lower case and it seems to work. Bit of a pain but I have my topics on tree computers working great this way.
