Postbox is consuming a lot of memory
Is anyone else looking at the amount of memory postbox.exe is using when running?
I've noticed that after having postbox open for about 30 min, it will be using ~500MB in windows task manager. I have never seen thunderbird using this much. Anyone else looking at this?

Inappropriate?Yes, all the time. And we'll definitely be doing things to reduce memory as much as possible as we progress through the beta period.

Inappropriate? For me, memory usage balloons if I leave my computer idle for awhile and Postbox starts indexing. I have tens of thousands of messages in one account (I use Gmail IMAP), and indexing those seems to blow the roof off as far as real memory usage goes. When I come back, I typically see Postbox using 500+ MB of real RAM.
-
Luke, what is the size of your message index? You can check for this by selecting the Tools menu, then seeing what the indexing X of Y numbers are. -
Inappropriate?Foobar, we have a release coming out in a couple of days which contains a number of memory improvements.
But in the meantime, it would be helpful to know if the memory creeps up during normal usage, or during a mass index operation?
Second, what is the size of your message index? You can check for this by selecting the Tools menu, then seeing what the indexing X of Y numbers are.
-
Inappropriate?I see memory consumption going up to 2.5 GB during a manually triggered indexing. The memory gets released after a few seconds though and after indexing is done, memory consumption is back to normal. I only see Postbox keep on using lots of memory if I leave the computer for some minutes.
During indexing Postbox shows "... n of 15848 messages" which is clearly wrong. After indexing it says "7288 messages are indexed" which makes more sense (there are 7307 messages in cyrus' spool directory right now). -
Inappropriate? Some of this makes sense, as the indexer should kick in when your computer is not busy.
On the message count issue, can you try something? Since all of your messages are already downloaded, indexing should be fast. So I would like to have select from the Tools Menu, Reset and Index All Messages. Please let me know if this fixes your message counts. -
Inappropriate?Reindexing doesn't change the wrong message count. (And it takes a lot of memory which doesn't get freed immediately.)
"find . -type f | grep -v msf | grep -v html | while read i ; do c=$((c + $(grep -c "^X-Mozilla-Status:" "$i"))) ; echo $c ; done" finds 9070 hits in the ImapMail folder of the account by the way. -
Inappropriate?Postbox's memory problems suddenly got very bad for me today. I opened it this morning, looked at two or three email messages, and then Postbox just hung. Checking mem usage in the Windows Task Manager shows that it continues to grow, even though Postbox appears to be hung. Memory usage keeps right on growing until I kill the task. Rebooting hasn't helped. It doesn't appear that Postbox is busy indexing or any other special activity.

help is on the way soon Jan. We are finishing up a new update which should address your issue. -
Inappropriate? We've prepared a test build that has this fix in it if folks want to try it out and report back here:

Thanks! -
Inappropriate? This should be fixed in BETA 11 which is now out: http://getsatisfaction.com/postbox/to...
Thanks,

Inappropriate?Memory usage is much better now. Thank you Postbox.
However I still noted a thing:
When Postbox B11 remain maximized the memory usage is growing more and more.
I started with 43 MB (37k messages) and after a few hours I had 89 MB ram usage (no indexing). -
I tried it again. Opened postbox 4 hours ago:
42 MB and 4 hours later (now) Postbox uses 101 MB memory. -
Inappropriate?remin,
To help us determine if 101 MB is acceptable, how many accounts do you have? And for those accounts, how many messages are in your Inbox(es)?
Details:
Each folder has an in-memory message header database, and for certain folders (like the Inbox), we keep the database open for performance reasons..
If you're on Mac you can use Activity Monitor to see which ".msf" files are open, and on Windows you can use Process Explorer.

Inappropriate?Seth, I have 25 accounts and 289 messages in my global inbox.
I don't check most accounts by default.
Same nr. of accounts takes much less memory in Thunderbird. -
Inappropriate? This thread and a few others indicate this problem is resolved, but it definitely isn't. I just had a 450MB image. It was after a big search, so I wonder if the memory is being released after that.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Brett,
Can you try something for me using the b16 test build (this will not work in b15)?
1) Do "Tools -> Error Console"
2) Copy and paste the following code in the "Code:" textbox:
Components.classes['@mozilla.org/msg-global-index;1'].getService(Components.interfaces.nsIMsgGlobalIndex).vacuum();
3) Press the "Evaluate" button
Postbox will freeze for a minute bit while we vacuum your Postbox index (the msgfti.sqlite file in your profile.)
After that, do you still see the memory issue after a big search?
Thanks in advance,
-Seth -
Inappropriate?Did that. When I started it had 405MB of Virtual Size and 230MB of Private Bites, according to process explorer.
It hung for 5 minutes before I finally killed it. The process had an occasional CPU spike, but the memory numbers didn't move at all.
After a restart it's fine, but that's to be expected.
Of note, I've been testing for 2 days (after a break between a few betas). I wouldn't thing my index would need much cleansing yet. I also haven't built any indexes yet. -
Inappropriate?I am also seeing giant memory usage. When I start up, the memory usage is reasonable, but a few minutes later it is back up at 450mb.
-
Inappropriate?Alex, could you install the test build for 1.0.2 to see if you still have issues with that version? Details can be found here:
http://www.getsatisfaction.com/postbo... -
I am now running 1.0.2 and by memory usage is now ~890MB! Also, now it does not give you the choice of searching only the inbox (I don't need a search of my giant spam folder!) -
Inappropriate? After using the test build for a couple days, my usage is up to 418 MB of real RAM. This is slightly better than 1.0.1, but not much. I have a lot of IMAP mail, so I'm not shocked, but I do find it a little funny that my email program is routinely the biggest RAM hog on my computer even compared to software like Photoshop. :)
-
Inappropriate?Postbox is slow, especially with search or when I want to open a specific email -- from the CPU Monitor it looks like it takes up alot of memory....help??

Postbox Slow and Memory Hogging?.

Inappropriate?Running 1.1b1, memory usage has stabilized around 430 MB. So no real improvement there.
