Many suggestions
I've sent most of these to Postbox in a QA form, but I thought I'd get them out there were users can back me up. Here's a list of some of the things I wish Postbox did differently:
- No smart mailboxes
- No way to JUST open a new tab (Like CMD+T in Safari), in Postbox, you have to right-click on a folder in the sidebar and "open in new tab" - and when you do, it opens IN THE TAB YOUR IN ALSO
- Tabs are so damn wide, you can only have a few open at once and still see them all
- All those extras in the tab bar (which I find little use for save "contacts") take up too much real estate and can't be turned off
- No way to close the "inspector" sidebar if you don't want it
- Deleting an account means you lose all the mail from that account, unless you use contextual menus to move mail just a few at a time (DEALBREAKER)
- No unified In/Drafts/Sent/Trash folders, so if you want to file away your "sent" stuff or look at your Drafts, you have to visit these files separately for every account (very close to being a DEALBREAKER — I want to go to "Sent" and be able to file away everything I sent for the day across 6 accounts)
- There's no way to color-label messages (you have to use "Topic," which takes up real estate in the mailbox pane, and isn't quick-glance condusive — what if I want to just highlight and email to serve as a reminder? Why should I have to pick a LABEL for it?)
- Sent messages are marked as "READ" not "SENT," so if you mix incoming and outgoing messages in a topical folder, you can't tell what you sent from what you received! (DEALBREAKER)
- Status, Priority, and Topic columns take up WAY too much real estate — there should be a way to iconize them (If attachments can be an icon column, so can these!)
- One recipient per line in the compose window is a pain in the butt
- No way to customize the address area of the compose window so that CC and BCC always appear (having to remember to change TO to BCC is a pain, and DANGEROUS
- Compose sidebar opens WAY off the right side of the screen
- No key command for "don't save" when closing a compose window
- Spellchecker stinks
- Cannot drag messages to the desktop to save them as a document (DEALBREAKER)
- When you "save as," the created document CANNOT BE OPENED BY MAILBOX (MAJOR DEALBREAKER)
- Cannot save messages as documents in an RTF format, so ALL FORMATTING IS LOST in the "soft copy"
- Search is wonky, but improving
- Signatures leave a lot to be desired
- Filters cannot be set to distinguish between incoming filters and outgoing filters (DEALBREAKER)
- Toolbar takes up a lot of real estate ("small icons" aren't very small)
Postbox is close to being a great app, but it's too enamored of its bells and whistles, and doesn't address some of these basic problems, many of which make it just like (or worse than) the alternatives.
/end rant (for now)

Inappropriate? Thanks for taking the time to post all this feedback rob. Lots of great nuggets here for us to digest.
I'm curious what you mean by "signatures leave a lot to be desired". What improvements would you like to see there?
Also File / New / Saved Search is how you set up the equivalent of a smart folder in Postbox.
Cheers,
-Scott -
I hadn't played with the signatures in b12. They're fine. Sorry. :)
Thanks for the suggestion of the Saved Search, but there are some problems with that as well: They can't be saved outside of an account or Local Folders (so you can't see the Saved Searches unless you go to that account (or local folder). It would be great to have a section for saved searches in the sidebar.
Also, I tried creating a saved search in the Local Folder (because the search I was saving included multiple account, so that seemed like the best place for it to avoid confusion), and whenever I leave the tab where I have that Saved Search displayed, when I RETURN to that tab, I'm no longer in the Saved Search folder — that tab is now displaying the Local Folders IN BOX instead, and I have to click on the Saved Search folder to get back to it.
Also, there's no way to do chose and/or when adding rules to the saved search. I tried to create a Saved Search that would essentially serve as the unified Sent folder Postbox doesn't offer. But that seems to be impossible because I can't choose the following criteria:
from is (acccount name 1)
OR
from is (account name 2)
AND
status is Sent
In fact, that leads me back to a HUGE problem with Postbox, which is that sent messages say "READ" not "SENT." There is a world of difference between "read" and "sent." :) -
Inappropriate?"No unified In/Drafts/Sent/Trash folders, so if you want to file away your "sent" stuff or look at your Drafts, you have to visit these files separately for every account"
But you can choose in every account settings "Copies and folders" where Postbox saves files. I have many accounts for emails and usenet newsgroups and I have one folder for Sent email and another for Sent usenet messages.
I’m unconcerned

Hi Marko, If I understand your correctly, this doesn't fit my needs. I need to be able to look in the "Sent" file for each account and see email I've sent (but not yet filed), AND I need a place to see ALL "Sent" (but not yet filed) messages across ALL accounts. -
Inappropriate? It would be great if this could be broken up into the separate points mentioned. That would allow people to comment on the points separately, as well as giving the "I like this idea" button some meaning.
I’m hopeful

Sorry about that. I was on a roll. :) -
Inappropriate?I'm also interested to know what "it's too enamored of its bells and whistles" means.
I’m interested

Hi rickdude,
I have little use for the Images and Links features taking up valuable room on the Tab bar, and I don't find most of the stuff in the Inspector pane to be helpful — or at the very least, it's less useful than being able to see a full message without having to scroll left to right because the inspector makes the message pane to narrow (one should be able to open and close the inspector as needed).
I also don't find the Compose sidebar to be of much use to me, and even when I do want to use it, it's more trouble than its worth because it opens so far to the right that it's off the side of the screen and I have to move the window before I can continue. -
Inappropriate? Thanks for expanding, Rob. Your points make sense.

Inappropriate?Just made a discovery that negates this original beef:
- When you "save as," the created document CANNOT BE OPENED BY MAILBOX (MAJOR DEALBREAKER)
After "Saving As," it's true you can't double-click on the resulting document and have it open in Postbox (don't know why I wrote "mailbox"!)
HOWEVER...You CAN click File > Open Saved Message...
Then you can drill down in your hard drive, find the saved doc, and open it in Postbox (this apparently works for any T-Bird-based email app).
So while that's a lot more hassle than it should be, at least the "dealbreaker" is gone. -
Inappropriate?Still a lot on your list for us to keep looking at :).
-
Inappropriate?True. And I'm grateful to see you say so. Gives me hope!
